Joren: I don't know why he should've asked. Bands like
Neutral Milk Hotel that are DEFINITELY not prog are still around, but I
assumed from previous threads on them that Co&Ca are considered
prog, but some people don't like their aesthetic.

I didn't say he should have asked, I said he could have, because he's complaining about how much work it was... for nothing. I think most people knew that Coheed and Cambria were controversial (they have been discussed before, many people AGAINST adding). So if you ask first, you save yourself the trouble when they are not acceoted, that's all.
(By the way: Max said Neutral Milk Hotel will be deleted soon)

I still believe they're prog... interesting time changes, complex
intervals, a concept that spans multiple albums, innovative playing,
crazy structures... what's not to love?

NEWS FLASH: Taste is subjective. Claudio's vocals are amazing, and the music is full of depth.

I'm totally with you on this one, Man Overboard. I recently listened to both their albums again and the more you disect them, the more prog they are. I'm sure the new album will help push them over the edge into the full-on world of prog.
also, coheed being prog or not should be based on the music they play and not whether you like them or not. disliking them is no reason to exclude them.

That is the thing that I do not like about this particular website...a
moderator can come in and delete stuff they don't consider prog,
regardless of what another member might think. I have not tried
looking specifically for Coheed & Cambria here, but if their
presence was deleted due to the "personal taste of someone in charge"
that is a shame, and does a disservice to the members (customers) of
this site that may want info. You may dislike the band, but don't
deny others the pleasure of reading about them.
And yes, I have a C & C disk. I have heard bad reviews on
several prog sites, so I knew I had to check them out for myself.
Is it prog? About as much as Porcupine Tree is, perhaps
moreso. It will continue to sit proudly on my shelf between my
Clearlight and Colosseum discs.

Coheed and Cambria are not emo! It's merely the vocalist that gives that impression, if Rush debuted today, they'd be given the emo tag as well!
Look, let's end this silliness RIGHT NOW. Look at these lyrics. These are PROG lyrics, in the vein of prog geekery!
A broad incision sits across the evening
The victim to our fathers lost war
The restless children sit and mourn the graves
Of those they've never seen before
Will they be buried here among the dead?
In the silent secret
[Chorus:]
The pioneers
In dealing with it they march for dawn, of Will and worthy
The truth be told the child was born
Man your own jackhammer
Man your battle stations
We'll have you dead pretty soon
And now
Sincerely written from my brother's blood machine
Man your battle stations
We'll have you home pretty soon
And now
Awake through motion with curiosity to curtain your first move
Over arms length they'll break protocol
Jealous envy for the youngest one
To be the hero is all I'll ask
Can I be buried here among the dead?
With room to honor me here in the end
You'll be better off too soon
You'll be better off when you get home
[Chorus]
For you,
I'd do anything just to make you happy, hear you tell me that you’re proud of me
For them,
I'll kill anything cut the throats of babies for them break their hearts for they were them
Waiting for you to say: I love you too
The navigator
The pilot
Her favorite
The one they call the vision that bears the gift
[x2]
Will,
Do the children really understand the things you did to them?
And why oh why…
Should they conjure up the will for you my love I would kill him
we're coming home pretty soon
Coming home
In the seventh turning hour
Will the victims shadow fall?
Should the irony grow hungry?
With the victory and all they sought for
We were one among the fence
One among the fence
[Guitar riffs and vocalizing]
We're coming home
Man your own jackhammer
Man your battle stations
We'll have you dead pretty soon
And now
Sincerely written from my brother's blood machine
Man your battle stations
We'll have you home pretty soon
tonight

Then why is it their name appears on more than one emo myspace profile? Infact most of them have Coheed an Cambria listed alongside Greenday and My Chemical Romance.
"I'll kill anything cut the throats of babies for them break their hearts for they were them Waiting for you to say: I love you too"
I'm afraid this is a typical emo line.

It's called "In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth".
The lyric you quoted is the vocalization of the one of the many
characters in the concept, who's got a bit of a screw loose. That
line is sung a bit psychotically.
...since when, however, does mentioning the word "love" suddenly make something not prog?
Why not look at the rest of the lyrics, very sci-fi, very
story-oriented? It's not like he said "Oh god, I'm waiting by the
phone, cutting my wrists while listening to Dashboard FOR YOU MY LOVE"
or anything.

Looking out through the tears that blind me my heart bleeds that you may find me or at least that I can forget and be numb, but I can't stop, the words still come: I love you.
I dont know when emotion in music got all confused with the meaningless fad known as 'emo'

Thank you, Publius, for going and giving it a shot.
For f**k's sake, I don't know what everyone's problem is. IKKSE:3
is a concept album, some of the characters have emotional attachments,
but that's not the f**king focus of the story! Are we forgetting
Greg Lake's countless love ballads, Pain Of Salvation's REMEDY
LANE!? It doesn't get more emo than f**king Undertow, but no one
calls them emo.
I swear, if the next amazing prog band debuted and were accepted by the
emo culture, most of you wouldn't touch it with a stick no matter HOW
good it is. I thought progheads were supposed to be more
openminded about music!?
Some of you really, really amaze me.

OH MY f**kING GOD.
Slipknot sucks because the MUSIC is god-awful, the lyrics being sh*t is just icing in a cake of awfulness.
Coheed & Cambria are prog because the MUSIC is prog, and the
LYRICS, being sci-fi, conceptual, story-oriented only further cement
that.
I guess the hidden track "2113", a tribute to Rush, means nothing too,
because one of the CHARACTERS, in the LARGE CONCEPT, is a bit nutter?!

Furthermore, since when was prog about what certain groups
preferred? Potheads love Pink Floyd, are they now stoner
rock? Punks love some Peter Hammill on occasion, is PH/VdGG now
punk? If people'd get over "scenes", they'd enjoy life a hell of
a lot more. I suppose next you'll wanna remove Kansas from the
archives because AOR people like a few of their songs.
Futher-f**king-more, most emo kids couldn't tell you sh*t about
Co&Ca aside from the two singles. I know, I've tried to have
discussions with several about it. It's only the proggers who
really delve into the whole album and understand the concept.
Why don't you get the album? As a concept work, it should only be
judged as such. Or would you be content letting someone tell you
what they think of Pink Floyd based off of any random track on The Wall?

directed towards the general population that would likely not give
Simon & Garfunkel a chance if they learned that the indie crowd
loves 'em.
I'm just sick of attitudes like that, that look at the surface of
things and are too closed-minded to look within. I don't think it
would be possible for someone to give me a good reason why Coheed and
Cambria are musically similar to, say, Dashboard Confessional, because
those similarities don't exist. But as long as we're playing that
game, there actually IS good emo out there, with progressive
tendencies. Bright Eyes, Cursive, At The Drive-In, the list goes
on.
But people seem to have this idea that the only way a band that's
acceptable to listen to is one that's claimed by their genre of choice
and ONLY their genre of choice. Hence, so many people sh*tting
themselves stupid over what bands are in or not in the archives.

Your opinion. I am open to a hell of alot of music. but Emo. I took one look at it and decided I didn't like it. for what it stands for, for crap music, for scarves in the summer, for stupid hair and for depressed f**ks and decided that I was keeping myself away from everything and anything emo

But if she's still reading: ...your boyfriend's hair is emo.

Just teasin', mate.
This thread is truly ironic. On emo boards, a lot of people
refuse to discuss Coheed and Cambria because "they're f**king
progressive rock".

btw... from an interview with Co&Ca's bassist:
DRE: Coheed & Cambria doesn’t seem to have a problem with being called progressive.
MT: That’s what I think we are. I know people tend to
shy away from that term but that’s the best way to describe it. I find
nothing wrong with it.
I mean fer f**k's sake, even the BAND calls themselves progressive, not emo. What more do you people neeeeed?

Czesgo, you're awfully defensive... and also seemingly very sure of what emo is or isn't.
I should also mention it's pretty emo to have a MySpace.

Hon, do you know *anything* about emo other than the stereotypes?
Fer god's sake, you probably don't like it when people get all on about
prog and all they've got to offer is misconceptions, so why must you
perpetuate that sort of behavior?

For one, the straight-edge thing is more prevalent in hardcore scene.
For another, I don't think the sci-fi story presented by Coheed and
Cambria has anything to do with "moaning about the boring things in
life".
You admit it, you know nothing about emo. You aren't qualified to
judge a band as such, and to be quite frank with you, it doesn't speak
well for you to continue defending a point that's been proven
invalid. Coheed and Cambria may be accepted by the emo scene, but
when compared to their actual music, lyrics, virtuousity, and other
IMPORTANT factors, their chance of being emo is null and void.

You don't like it: That's a point that can be proven, and that's
fine. I don't like Magellan's new album, but you don't see me
trying to tell everyone it's not prog.
They are emo: That is a point that's been proven false, and you
appear to be a closed-minded buffoon by continuing to state it.
Continuing to do so will make you appear more and more unknowledgeable
regarding music.
Publius, my apologizes.

You're probably the most closed-minded and ignorant person I've ever
seen on this board. Please, get over your high school clique mentality
and come back when you're ready to accept that not everything can
easily be categorized into general stereotypes.
Furthermore, you've contradicted yourself so many times that it makes
my head hurt. You keep claiming Coheed is emo (which they're not), then
say you know nothing about emo (but still hate it for some reason). How
can you categorize a band in a genre you admittedly can't even
recognize? I'd like to see you make a list of emo bands just to prove
to everyone that you don't know what you're talking about.

Eh, don't bother. She'll hop onto MySpace and grab a random top
ten list that will no doubt include Coheed, where she's admitted she
got the
idea they were emo in the first place.

Getting off topic about what is emo and MySpaces and such... I have
re-registered C&C to the site by ways of revamping my "reasons they
should be included" section. I'll keep my fingers crossed .
P.S. Sorry to all those who don't like the band
I'm really not much into the "emo" scene myself, but the simple fact
that I listen to these guys constantly told me something. Love them or
hate them, I do insist that they are progressive rock, and even friends
and family members of myself who aren't particular to them consider
them "prog" over "emo"
