I have recently fallen in love with Tangerine Dream's "Phaedra", amd one thing in particular that has grasped me is the awesome lead synth that comes in at http://youtu.be/w3j4RVFQnqU?t=3m30s" rel="nofollow - 3:30 in the title track. Could somebody please tell me what this synthesiser is?

-------------
I am currently digging:

Hawkwind, Rare Bird, Gong, Tangerine Dream, Khan, Iron Butterfly, and all things canterbury and hard-psych. I also love jazz!

Please drop me a message with album suggestions.

The sound you talk about is, I think, a mellotron processed through their EMS VCS3 synth module. Yes, yes it is an awesome sound

I have the CD with the anniversary concert ... and I doubt that it is the VCS3 ... and over the years the synths would have changed, I would imagine. I can't see Edgar Froese lugging around a VCS3, when one of his keyboards nowadays can easily do 10 VCS3's and 10 other keyboards they had!

I think Dean might be able to tell us what that is, though. I'll check when I get home.

There was a web page that you could reach from their website forums that has a list of all the instruments at various times.

Overall. The creation of Phaedra is just amazing. Easily in my top 3 for electronic Prog albums if all time.

All hail EMS VCS 3. The conduit to fun with electronics. ;)

Indeed, a VCS3 would be heaps of fun with the 'pin matrix' system it had......

Wasn't it just a phaser they popped it through? Or did the VCS3 have a phaser in it? It doesn't sound like just a filter...

A negative number was raised to a power that is not an integer.

It could be a phased VCS3 and mellotron running in unison, but I'm certain I read somewhere (can't recall where) Edgar stating he ran the 'tron through a VCS3's filter (or Phaser)......
