The occasional spliff is a good thing in my book.  I'm a bit of a hypocrite though, as I really dislike smoking, especially in bars or restaurants.  I would probably be in favour of a ban on smoking in public places to be honest.

In saying that, if smoking wasn't bad for you, I would probably smoke as it can be enjoyable - as a social thing.

Yeah, likewise. I never do it on my own, always with friends and my girlfriend. Occasional spliffs are good fun.

I'm not a smoker anymore. I used to smoke some cigars from time to time.

Posted By: Hangedman
Date Posted: August 04 2005 at 11:10
I used to regularily smoke cigarettes (several a day) marijuana (at least a dimebags worth a day) and cigars (I used to just smoke these instead of cigarettes, but that was very costly, it moved down to a few a week in the last stages). Suddenly I decided to quit, it wasnt because Id die younger (I figure whats the point in living if you just spend all of your life bieng afraid of death, its going to come anyways may as well enjoy the time you have), but becuase it hit me that it would ruin my teeth. Im certainly not ruining my perfect teeth for anything

It was a nice feature in Italy, where you could enjoy the meal without smelling that s**t simultaneously.

I'm speaking of restaurants, ofcourse. What one smokes in the open air, doesn't interest or annoy me.

Slightly different taste, also!

I jused to be quite a heavy smoker, smoked for more than 30 years, but I quit about one and a half year ago. It was a decision made very quickly: I realised that I didn't have any more cigarettes and instead of going out and getting some more I quit. Unfortunately I put on some weight and haven't been able to get rid of that as well.

Yep - cigars , cigarillos , cigarettes. Anything goes really, but I don't smoke very often and I know it's a bad habit.  I've no intention of stopping though.

And yes, smoking should be banned in bars, restaurants etc. People who want to drink or eat without being exposed to the smoke should be able to do so.

I like the act of smoking things once in awhile, but I hate the smell of cigarettes. I should probably try pipeweed, but I really don't care enough to get the components. If weed didn't make me paranoid, I'd probably do that. Eh, I suppose it's a better idea just to wait until I move out to get into all that.

Smoking is the most unpleasant method of self-destruction. It is slow, messy, and ultimately not particularly enjoyable when you only smoke to fight cravings. Not to mention that you smell like sh*t all of the time as a result.

Anyway. I smoked for a brief period, but only socially. Then I had an accident and was told that smoking slows the healing process, so I gave up. Smoking's quite enjoyable but I don't think it's worth the increased risk of cancers and lung diseases.

I use to be ambivalent towards non-smokers but of late I find myself becoming less tolerant to the point of being internally quite belligerent. Since my self-control and will-power has already been proven to be weak it is only a matter of time before I lose the ability to keep those pugnacious feelings to myself. And to be perfectly honest, I am looking forward to that day.

I think I have had 2 drags, 1 quarter, 1 half and 1 whole cigarette in my life. All of this has happened in my college life I am still in right now, pretty dumb right. I just don't see what is so special about it. I have never tried any drugs, I just don't really think they're my thing.

People just tell me they feel like crap when their high, so it doesn't make apparent sense to me.

I'll never say never though. Probably get tempted next time I'm at a party.

I'm a bit of a health nut too, so making it a habit will never cross my mind.

Do you think you could control it now and smoke just in some occasions? I mean, if you do miss it, why not smoke a blond when, I don´t know... going to a concert or something? Or you have stoped ´cause you are just not ok with it any longer?

Never smoked a cigarette in my life, and I don't intend to. I think it's better staying away from it altogether than going through what I see many smokers do, especially the trouble they have when they try quitting. I kinda feel the same way about coffee(eventhough that's not bad at all compared to tobacco); you only "need" it once you've started using it.

I usually don't smoke. but after a REALLY exceptional meal (as co-owner of a restaurant that serves some pretty fancy stuff this really means something) I will smoke a cigar. it is a habit I picked up from Friede, by the way; we just have to look at each other after a meal and know "yes, it is time for a cigar". this happens approximately only about once every 3 months. quite unusual for a woman to smoke a cigar; usually you would imagine either fat business men or grumpy old men doing it

So... żhow are you today?. When I first started, what helped me the most was to think about that horrible smell while eating something really tasty. Also, when I started doing excercise, the general feeling that I was an unhealthy disaster, unable to do a simple excercise rutine, helped me to hate even more the idea of tobacco and it's effects on me, effects that I never cared about until that moment. Do go on an reward your efforts each day with tasty gifts, like mint chocolates or a nice cup of green tea, etc. Remember: excercise is the key. If you keep the same life of a smoker, but without smoking, you'll be back soon. Instead, if you experience the sensation of cleaner lungs by using them, you'll  succeed. Good luck.

thanks Jody....  I did slip up... and have had a couple over the last couple of days.  Didn't have any today... and just taking it day by day.  It's not as much the nicotine I suspect... christ... I have other addictions to make up for that LOL .  I think it is the mental side of it that is the hardest.... there are times when a cigarette isn't just feeding the cravings for nicotine... for example... when I am scratching  my head over something at work...  I honestly do think better if I have a cigarette.  I am a high strung ..nervous little runt... hence the 20 odd variations of nicknames like turbo..spastic..etc..  I've had over the years.  It just focuses me.. is a time to reflect and ponder rather than act... oh well...  proud of myself so far.

exactly.... that's why other than some years enjoying 'Mr. Stinky' in college.. I stayed away from drugs...  probably would have loved it.

Alcohol was what I struggled with.. and that for the social aspects of it... was very shy and booze opened me up... went from being too shy to talk to women to crossdressing... dancing on pool tables. and running around campus with no clothes on.

Alcohol was what I struggled with.. and that for the social aspects of it... was very shy and booze opened me up... went from being too shy to talk to women to crossdressing... dancing on pool tables. and running around campus with no clothes on.

It's amazing the problems many teens are facing with alcohol. Last year, i knew two girls  (one of which i still regularly associate with), one 15 years old and one 16 years old, who even at that age already had attended AA meetings. Both are also regular smokers, surprise surprise.

I myself was beginning to have an alcohol problem, as well as taking up social smoking again. But before the alcohol became a problem (which it was beginning to around july last year), i took it upon myself to stay sober for a set period of time, even at parties where almost all my friends would be drinking at. I also decided to finally quit smoking all together last month, no more social smoking for meThumbs%20Up. Since last month, i even just have this better overal feeling of healthiness, of course aided by the fact i exercise more now as well and eat better.
But as it was, both these girls since have began to drink less, although unforunately still continue to get wasted at least once a week. And the girl that was 15 at the time she attended AA (she is now 16), made a vow to never smoke again for her new years resolution. She lasted a few days, and is already smoking againStern%20Smile

ˇˇˇREALLY!!!... I've always pictured as the exact opposite of that self description. Back when I was a smoker (until last year),  I always smoked ouside, in one places, and far away from children or non smokers, etc. I can't understand how smokers can smoke indoors. That's horrible. And I used to like smoking... anyway, now I hate it and I wish I would never started it in the first place. I was just over exposed to it and now I realize how "contagious" can it be.

Although being a former smoker (as i pointed out on the previous page), i now tend to regard smoking as a highly seflish act. I ask many smokers why they smoke and why they continue to do so. One response is typically "Well it's my body it's damaging" "It's my choice" . The latter being one of the most incredibly selfish things i have ever heard. While it may be the smokers choice to smoke, do they ever take a moment to think about the effects it has on other people who make the choice not to smoke? Examples: Perhaps a child's parent smokes. While it may be the choice of the parent to smoke, it is not the child's choice to have to breath in second hand smoke if they are in a situation in which it is unavoidable. It may be the parents choice to smoke, but is it their child's choice their parent will most likely either succumb to a serious illness, with the child having to bear the pain of watching their parent go through that, or that they have to attend a funeral service 5 to 30 years earlier than if their parent didn't smoke? no it is not their choice at all their child that hopefully is smart enough not to take the habit up, has to live with the pain of their parents selfish choice in life. The list of how smoking affects those who do not make that selfish choice in life go on and on, i could continue for the next 2 hours.
So before anyone here on Progarchives ever takes another drag, please, find a moment to think about what i said, and to do what's best for not only you (not smoking), but anyone else who truly cares about you.

I smoked once, a Black and Mild.  I did it because they smell good from a distance.  I didn't get much of anything out of it, but I would consider trying one again.

Having grown up with parents and grandparents that smoked (from the Kentucky area, go figure, Carrollton, where my parents grew up had lots of tobacco warehouses), going on family road trips and choking on the fumes kind of conditioned me against it.  I took a drag off a cig once as a kid and pretty much cured me of any interest in taking up the habit.  My wife started in college has quit twice, but recently is back on.  Arrrgh! @#%$*@&*@^@*!%*@@~*&!

I hate how smoking has doubled the effective age of some of my relatives, so I will not be taking it up anytime soon. My only vice is soda. Love me some coke. Drink about 5 12ozs a day.

I'm pretty sure my Cocacola habit gave me type 2 diabetes.  Can we say "high fructose corn syrup"?
