From Chris Cutler via Aymeric Leroy:

Just got this from Chris Cutler...

"So sorry to pass on this unhappy news. Lindsay died this afternoon. She had contracted pneumonia and spent the last six days at home surrounded by a few old friends. She died very peacefully. The funeral will be next Wednesday 25 September at 4:30 PM at Golders Green crematorium."

Many here know that Lindsay was suffering from a particularly acute and debilitating form of multiple sclerosis, which took a turn for the worse in the late 1990s rendering her unable to perform, and ultimately unable to do very much at all. A great tragedy for such a talented performer and composer.

May she now rest in peace.

We've lost another brilliant musician, one who unfortunately had to battle illness for many years.  Please feel free to use this thread to talk about some of her work that you most enjoy.

Very sad that she's had to be in the condition she was in physically for so many years.
Well Henry Cow comes to mind first for me. Her aboe and bassoon playing were remarkable. She guested on some special albums as well like Fish Rising, The Rotters' Club and Civil Surface. Such a talented lady who's gift will continue to be enjoyed by me and many others.

How sad. Cry
Such a talented composer and reed player.
I still play her soundtracks "Rags" and "The Golddiggers" often (see review on PA), and her side of HC's "Western Culture" has many of my favorite Henry Cow moments.

Rest in peace.

Wow, this is a total bummer.  I'm not very knowledgeable about the Cow but I'm aware of her stature and contribution to music.

She also contributed to the highly maligned second Comus album, an album which I personally like and will be pulling off the shelf tomorrow in her honor.

RIP

This is truly a shame to read. A great underappreciated talent.

I'll be playing some HC for her tonight.

Such a great talent - I will be spinning 'Rags' shortly. Loved her magical Bassoon. Big, BIG loss.

You're absolutely right. I always look forward to that moment on FISH RISING where her bassoon comes in. Definitely one of the highlights of the album.

We could say she doesn't suffer anymore, but that's never a consolation. Unhappy

I hardly knew her works (I have just one album by Henry Cow), but I was aware of her importance in this band.
She also played with French double-bassist Joëlle Léandre, so I guess the concerts planned in the Triton (near Paris) this week-end will be dedicated to Lindsay Cooper.

Cry This is so sad. I loved what she brought to the Cow.

Rest in peace Lindsay, and thank you for the musicHug

I read that she was sick. Sad to hear that she's gone. And I was just getting familiar with some of her works. Will spin the only two albums I have by/with her, HC - S&G and Rags/The Golddiggers, again soon. RIP

Was listening to Unrest in the car - she really brought something special to Henry Cow, that's for sure.

I just realized she plays on some other albums I have as well - Slapp Happy's Desperate Straights and News From Babel's two albums. Gonna play them soon.

Dear Lindsay also performed on the Nic Potter album 'The Blue Zone'. So much fine work to enjoy from her. Not much Bassoon in Prog-Rock. Brian Gulland (Gryphon) and Roy Wood (Move, ELO) come to mind.

Damn, only just heard about this. I always found Cooper's contributions a highlight of any project she was involved with - she's one of those musicians where if I hear she appears on an album I'm immediately more likely to check it out. I must look into her solo discography at some point.

Nice to see that the Independent and Guardian websites ran very lengthy and knowledgeable obituaries for her at any rate.

Thanks Warthur! I hadn't even considered looking for a proper obituary. I've just read the Guardian one (link:  http://www.theguardian.com/music/2013/sep/24/lindsay-cooper" rel="nofollow - http://www.theguardian.com/music/2013/sep/24/lindsay-cooper  ) and it's made me realise just how much of her work I've yet to properly explore.

I've also discovered she studied at the same art college as me (albeit decades earlier!) - the now sadly deceased Dartington College of Arts.

I just read of her passing; I'm immensely sorry to hear.

Though Henry Cow introduced me to her and will remain my first love, she also played on one of my favourite Swans songs:

Very impressed to hear that she'd been dealing with her MS since the late 1970s and stayed in music until it was literally physically impossible for her to continue. Having known people with the condition I know how much it takes out of you and the sheer reserves of strength, determination, and sheer grit involved to keep as active as she was able to up to her retirement beggar belief.

A wonderful talent.....love her on those Cow albums and on that Hillage disc.  Sad, first MS stunts a remarkable career then leaving us too soon.  Yes, I'll throw on Western Culture....she's all over that underrated gem both playing and composing.

I like to feel the suspense when you're certain you know I am there.....
