Now this is incredibly difficult...so many great options. Spirited away has one of the most most atmospheric & poignant moments of any animated film (the train ride), but I can't deny the charms of Kiki's Delivery Service.

Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind for me, I've watched it and Laputa, Castle in the Sky since he announced his retirement and Totoro is next. They're all great films and I tend to enjoy them more than Isao Takahata's and his son Goro's work for Ghibli, his brilliance will be greatly missed. Bit unfair having The Wind Rises on here, if you weren't in Venice or in Japan then your not likely to have seen it, though I'm very much looking forward to it. Can anyone tell me who directed Arrietti, I thought that was a Miyazaki film as well. ------------- Spending more than I should on Prog since 2005

I might agree with this, but Princess Mononoke is close to my favorite. Also, the scenery in Arrietty looked amazing. |

By far, though, the best writing in any ghibli film has to be The Cat Returns, the spiritual successor to Whisper of the Heart. |

The characters are the fictional ones from the protagonist-of-WotH's story, so "spin-off" might be an apt way to describe it. It's definitely worth the watch, though. |

My vote goes to Mononoke. I prefer the overall aesthetics of Nausicaa and Castle in the Sky, but ultimately I find Mononoke to have the best thought out story.
