These are the current 10 highest rated live albums on PA. I was a bit surprised at both what was there and what wasn't.

Impossible to choose between "Playing the Fool", "The Great Deceiver" & YCDTOSA 2...I'll go with "Playing the Fool" since I saw them open for Yes on that tour

Easily Coma Divine. That's one of Swilson's best outputs. Love it!

Surprised there is no Magma, considering the huge number of amazing live albums they have. Voted for Playing The Fool, live GG is always a treat to hear

I like this comment I saw on a Youtube video of a Gentle Giant concert:
I think Gentle Giant more than most other prog bands knew that technical
ability meant nothing if you weren't willing to play with it. Even at
their most rigid there was a sense of a amateur, punk energy almost.
When I listen to Yes or ELP (no offense to them) I hear musicians
showing how to play music. When I hear GG I hear musicians showing how
to have fun with music.
sums it up really well for me

I like this comment too, and voted GG. It takes a lot of guts and talent to mess around with such intricate music and make it work. Playing the Fool is my favorite album of theirs. So many other bands, like the aforementioned among others, largely play what they record. A live performance should be unique and made all the more special for those involved when it gets lost in time rather than recorded for posterity. It becomes and event unto itself and not just another stop on a tour.

King Crimson
Honorable mention for the missing - Pink Floyd, Deep Purple, Magma, Yugen, Henry Cow, Tangerine Dream, Hawkwind
------------- Ian

Well if this is the best 10 live prog albums???? I'm astonished that so many great live albums are missing, too many to mention.
From the list I'll go with Coma Divine, a superb album and one that might just possibly make my top 10 live prog albums.

I would choose Deep Purple's Made in Japan, Tull's Nothing is Easy: Isle of Wight, 1970, or Genesis' Seconds Out over any of these.

Of the albums listed, Coma Divine by far. On this release, they manage to make some of the songs actually sound better than on the studio releases.
Of any prog live album, I would choose Camel's creatively titled A Live Record. A double album offering of their best from their first five albums, plus a superior version of The Snow Goose was nice to hear since I was never amazed by the studio version.

Exactly...I love Gentle Giant because they were fearless live. I saw them open for Yes on the tour Playing the Fool was recorded on. Doing the 5 part a capella in "Knots" or the 4 piece recorder ensemble in "Excerpts from Octopus" in front of 10,000+ manic Yes fans took talent, balls, and a massive sense of humor

A really surprising Top 10, voted for GG but there are many other live albums I prefer to many of these. Shocking not to see Seconds Out, Welcome Back My Friends, YesShows, A Live Record, not one Pink Floyd or Roger Waters...
Regarding Purple, remember that Proto-Prog and Prog-Related do not count for the Top lists.

Sounds like I need to hear this, and soon too. I'm a big GG fan, but they've been off my scope for some time now. Still have half of their studio albums, this live album and their DVD's left on my wish list. Looks like I need to do some serious GG purchasing in the near future.

Dream Theater's "Score" is the only one of these I've heard. My vote goes there (because it's a great live album).
Allmann Brothers' "Live @ Fillmore East" is my favorite live album of all time though.

I haven't heard most of this albums, but I really liked Coma Divine a lot, and that album got me into Porcupine Tree. On the other hand, I was tremendously disapointed when I got "Playing the Fool", and even after many listenings I do rather dislike that album (except for "Funny ways", which is outstanding); actually, it almost put me off from getting any more Gentle Giant albums, however, I ended up getting all up to "Octopus", and though I really loved the first 2 albums, I don't expect to get the rest.

Live at Leeds is hardly prog. I'm just surprised that ELP and Yes aren't here.
