One of the most unique and innovative musicians of his era, and certainly one of the most eloquent.

He was able to make magic with a modest Farfisa.

A real genius

Met him years ago doing a poetry gig with Michael McClure I believe.  He wasn't the most friendly guy that night, but I don't fault him....it has to be a drag being approached by "enthusiastic" youngsters all the timeLOL.  Have a lot of respect for those 3 guys, it couldn't have been easy dealing with Morrison night after night.

Just wanted to say I'm sad that we lost a great keyboardist today. Ray was a gem. Playing left hand bass live all the time and still doing what he did with his right hand was no easy trick. His style of playing contributed greatly to the Doors' music.

R.I.P., Ray.

Instantly recognisable keyboard sound, which epitomised the 60s for me - a real loss to music.

A wonderful musician, probably just as important to The Doors sound as Jim Morrison. You couldn't imagine the band without his otherworldly keyboards. My favourite:

RIP Ray.

Sad loss Cry
I wonder who would know about the existence of the Rhodes piano bass was it not for Ray.

Sorry for small pedantic correction on Ivan's comment but his organ (after having first used a Vox Continental combo) was a Gibson G101 which indeed looks quite like a Farfisa (btw at the right we can see a bit of the Vox Continental he used in the beginning).

RIP Ray Manzarek

In tribute to Rays incredible skill I post this

Ray was a fantastic keyboardist for The Doors among others - he made his indelible mark in music history. Loved his work on Light My Fire, Crystal Ship, The End and especially Riders on the Storm. A legend greatly missed.

The Doors are, to me, the most important American band from the 60's, and Ray was the most important part of the band's sound.  Sad news indeed.

R.I.P. Ray, and sincere condolences to everyone close to him.
And Thank You for such magical music.

His keyboards were as much a part of the Doors sound as Lords were to Deep Purple/Whitesnake, Peter Bardens was to Camel and Richard Wright was to Pink Floyd.

The Doors released two albums with Morrison, to me they were the best the did, much likes Floyd's recordings without Waters

I know I'm a bit late to the party, but wow, rest in peace Ray. A legend. One of my favourite musicians ever. I was really in shock when I found out - way too early to go, way too early. The Doors have been one of my favourite bands since I was like really young. Very sad. Unhappy

Sorry to be pedantic, that's 'without' Morrison.........
More folks need to discover Ray's first solo effort 'The Golden Scarab' - borderline Prog in places too.
I wonder if Ray ever used a synth during his days in The Doors ??  Bless him.

According to Ray's memoir, "Light My Fire. My Life With The Doors", he himself never used synthesizers for the Doors albums.

But during "Strange Days" sessions "Paul Beaver brought his huge modular Moog system into the studio... [It was] one of the first uses of the Moog synthesizer in rock".
The problem was it's too difficult to repeat necessary sounds on Moog. Again, according to Ray, "We used the electronic wind sound Beaver had created on "Spanish Caravan"* and then another sound on Jim's voice - ... - on the title cut, "Strange Days"".

When Ray tells about recording "The Soft Parade" album he adds: "Had synthesizers been more advanced, more user-friendly back then, I would have scored the whole thing by myself. But after that Paul Beaver episode with the modular Moog, well, forget synths".

* - Looks like "Spanish Caravan" was recorded during "Strange Days" sessions. Confused

That bit of info is very valuable !!  Thanks.  'Horse Latitudes' features unique sounds too.
Even more credibility that The Doors were progressive.

Date Posted: May 26 2013 at 16:01
^ I thought there are synths on "Horse Latitudes", but according to Ray all its sounds were made by Yamaha piano (Ray pulled strings), Robby's guitar and screams and noises by Jim, John Densmore, Ron Krieger (Robby's brother), Alan Ronay and Pamela Courson.

By the way, Ray had numerous talents. We all know his contibution to the Doors' music, his sensitivity to good lyrics. But he's also a great storyteller (reading his book "Light My Fire. My Life With The Doors" is a real pleasure) and a talented filmmaker (he directed some Doors videos, his UCLA student movies "Induction" and especially "Evergreen" prove my point, both published on this DVD: http://www.progarchives.com/album.asp?id=34398" rel="nofollow - http://www.progarchives.com/album.asp?id=34398 ; in 2000 he directed the full-length movie "Love Her Madly":  http://www.mcclure-manzarek.com/lovehermadly.html" rel="nofollow - http://www.mcclure-manzarek.com/lovehermadly.html ).

Yeah, the world became an emptier place without Ray.

Ray's UCLA films are on YouTube.

Evergreen:

Induction:

Ray's then girlfriend (and later the one and only wife) Dorothy Fujikawa played in both films.
Dorothy deserves a special mention in the Doors history, I guess the band could not survive in 1965 without her moral and financial support.

Interesting.  In some ways, I enjoy the 2 post-Morrison albums more than the earlier ones, and it's thanks to Ray.  A song like 'The Mosquito' is a knock-out.  As is 'Verdilac' and I love the gentleness of Densmore's 'Piano Bird'.  More Jazz oriented than the previous acid-psych stylings.  'Other Voices' is superb.  Always will be one of my fave keyboardists.  Jim was an inspired poet, but too much of a drug fiend to hold it all together.  Shame.

It seems the Doors themselves don't consider albums without Morrison true Doors albums. That's why Elektra have not released them on CD yet. Jim moved to Paris, magic's gone.
