Blue Oyster Cult are one of the best American rock bands who often strayed into the Prog Rock territory. Which of their first 7 albums do you find to be the best. I won't vote, but if I did it would be hard to choose between SPECTRES and
SECRET TREATIES. Thank you!

Forgot to mention that I did not include live albums such as the monster great release ON YOUR FEET OR ON YOUR KNEES, which has a great title and I love when the band is introduced at the start of the show!

Secret Treaties and Spectres are my two favorites as well.  But, Secret Treaties it is.

However, my favorite BOC album is definitely Imaginos.

I've always liked their wild and crazy occult rock and roll.......I went with Secret Treaties and then Agents Of Fortune, after that I really like Fire Of Unknown Origin, and there are some really cool tracks on the first one but the recording is really muddy on that one.
btw....Espers does a really cool version of Flaming Telepaths on their short cd.

I can't vote yet because I'm still revisiting these, but I have a very different take on this band.  My favorite albums are the ones most people hate....Spectres and Mirrors.  And I like Agents, very diverse and imaginative.   The Agents-Mirrors period is the one that most interests me, some really different and cool moody stuff.

Many of the others don't do much for me.  The early hard rock ones, and Fires, are very disappointing albums.  Cultosaurus flat out sucks.

Just initial reactions though, I need more time to play them all again.

Also, there was an active BOC poll....you should use the Search feature before starting polls.Smile

I'm sorry, I can't talk to you anymore.  Tongue

I do love Spectres, but Fire is one of my three favorite albums, up there with Secret Treaties and Imaginos.  Give Cultosaurus some time, it's a grower.

I love Fire of Unknown Origin because I had it as a kid.  Apart from that, I only ever listen to the first three albums, of which Secret Treaties is the best, I think.  I'll abstain from voting because I have only heard half of these choices so far.  I've listened to Agents of Fortune a couple of times and thought it was pretty weak except for "Summer of Love" and "ETI" (love that song).  Never really cared for "Reaper" anyway.  And the second half of the album just struck me as dull.

No probs DocSmile

It's been really a fun reunion with this band.  I look forward to reviewing them one day.  If my views hold, I expect to be fully ostracized from the BOC communityLOL

I love Joe Bouchard's "Screams" on the debut, and how it segues into "Foot".

"Flaming Telepaths" into "Astronomy" is a classic moment too (from 3rd album).

Mine is Imaginos as well. It's coming in the second half of the poll with another classic, Fires of Unknown Origin.

Yea, Cultosaurus....Not a winner. Maybe 1 or 2 good tracks on that one. I think Mirrors is too much maligned and should get better ratings.

What? I did a search for Blue Oyster Cult polls and came up empty!!  But then I just tried again widened the search and did find one going back to 2010. I didn't see that the search went only back 6 months at first. Oh, well.

Man, I really like Cultasaurus, particularly the first few tracks, but my favorite has always been Tyranny & Mutation. It's cool and vicious and I dig the raw vibe.

has to be Secret Treaties, as "Fire" is not here... Cultosaurous not bad at all, for some reason 80's Cult clicked better for me, I find some of the 70's albums too "awkward"

I played "Secret Treaties" to death when I was 15 and still love it.  Being somewhat of a WWII history buff, Me262 has always been my fave BoC song...in fact, I remember buying a model of an Me262 and painting the BoC logo on the wings Wink.   "Cultosaurus Erectus" is a close 2nd, 'Lips in the Hills' is one of the great rock songs.  Since live albums weren't included in the poll, I have to give a special award to the versions of "Hot Rails to Hell" and "The Last Days of May" on the "On Your Feet or On Your Knees" live album.

One of my favourite bands of all time......but I'm not allowed to vote in this poll for some reason??? Confused

Oh well, each of the first seven has some classic moments, but I'd probably say that 'Agents Of Fortune' just nudges it for me.

As for their entire career, my fave is actually one that often gets overlooked - 'The Revolution by Night' - worth buying for side one alone........ 'Shooting Shark' being my absolute favourite track of all time! Period! Smile

^I believe you have to have a certain number of posts (100?) before you're allowed to vote in polls.  It's an anti-spam thing.

As for Revolution, I too think Shooting Shark is a great song, but there is loads of really awful stuff on that one.

BOC do not play a style that I typically enjoy, but they have a lot of songs I like.  I have only heard 3 or 4 albums in their entirety (Tyranny and Mutation, Mirrors, Agents of Fortune, Fire of Unknown Origin) and only really liked "Fire of Unknown Origin".  But I enjoy many other songs like "Godzilla", "Death Valley Nights, Nosferatu, In Thee, You're not the one...

I have to say Revolution along with Fire are my favourite of BOC and for some reason I like the whole of Revolution...Embarrassed

I love the first one, especially with the bonus tracks of Soft White Underbelly and Stalk-Forrest group tracks. They were still trying to figure out what they were doing and there are some seriously weird and unexpected songs on there.

I saw them in '76 and they were awesome. Saw them in '79 and they were not.

Tyranny and Mutation, for sure!  One of the greatest albums EVER!

I saw them open for Jeff beck Group in '74 and they were good and then saw them around 1982 at a local fair and they were just so so.

I saw them in August '78 at the Oakland outdoor coliseum at a concert series that was called a "Day on the green".  The lineup was AC/DC, Cheap Trick, Blue Oyster Cult, Journey, Ted Nugent.  I would've been happier to have Blue Oyster Cult be the headliner as the only bands that blew me away that day were AC/DC and Blue Oyster Cult.

It is ouch territory to be sure....can't imagine what they were thinking.  Much of Revolution ain't too bad though.  I remember that concert well, still have my T-shirt around somewhere.

Oh for sure.  I think Shooting Shark and Shadow of California are great songs.  Dragon Lady isn't too bad either.

Funny enough, I love the song "Blue Oyster Cult" on Imaginos and its chant "We understand! We understand! We understand! Blue Oyster Cult."  For some reason that doesn't seem nearly as offensive.

Thumbs Up YES!! This song is outstanding. CotHM was a welcome surprise at the time, and Heaven Forbid right before it was pretty solid, too. But Curse is nearly on par with the 70s BOC.

Of what I have heard I would say it's a draw between Tyranny and Mutation and Secret Treaties.  However, I have not yet heard Spectres, Mirrors, Cultosaurus or the debut album.  I agree that if Imaginos was on the list I would definitely choose that.

In the end I went with can't decide.  I think I need to get into some serious BOC listening soon.  The new 17 disc Columbia Albums Collection box set looks like a very attractive (and reasonably priced) proposition - even though I already own 4 of the albums.
