Is it possible for you to make a recommendation engine for each user based on his ratings? I like the way it works on sites like Rateyourmusic or Allmusic...

Well, since the only database-like fields for albums are band, subgenre, year and rating (and other lesser relevant such as country or release type e.g. studio album, live album, DVD etc) the only automatic recommendations which could be made would be done on some of these criteria, comparing albums you have rated highly with others sharing some of these criteria, I doubt if it would be too useful, in the Top Albums section you cal already filter.

My cable TV provider can provide automatic recommendations based on the programs and movies I have watched but I rarely use them, I guess I'm too old-fashioned.

Sounds like a lot of work to me and why do it if other web sites already do it?

The algorithm looked at all the 5-star and 1-star ratings and is now quietly sitting in a corner of a darkened room sobbing its artificial reality eyes out.

There used to be a really good web site where you could enter a band name and it would list all the similar bands in a cloud-like graphic. The nearer the band was to the one you entered originally, the closer they would be in style.

Can't for the life of me remember what it was called now, but it was quite accurate.
