Well?
Damnation's a great example of a 'normal' album by them

I think it's part of their sound, it never really bothers me, but also never really touches me.
I would prefer it without, but maybe than the music will be less good, so I voted yes, but with a slight hesitation.

Opeth is a prog death metal band.
If you're too close minded to enjoy growls that's your own problem, isn't it?

I think the growls are part of thier sound. It goes well, and they write it in nicely. its not like they just tack it on to any song they write, its appropriate.

I like it just the way it is.On Ghost Reveries Akerfeldt really balances his death metal growls and normal singing voice pretty evenly.

I don't care. The few Opeth songs I've heard sound pretty decent... but I've never really liked death vocals or anything like that.

Here's the close-mindedness thing again...
Answering yes in this poll in no way means that you can't enjoy growls.
And if someone doesn't I don't see how that's a problem.

Not liking growls has nothing to do with having a closed mind. I
don't see the point of death metal growls, and I don't like them.
However good the music may be, the death growls ruin it for me.

Same here. And I disagree that Damnation is a good example of a
"normal" album, as it's extremely mellow. I enjoy the heavy songs just
as much when it's regular singing and not growling.
I've said it before, I'll say it again - I just think growling is overused, and frequently comes off sounding pretty corny.

no, its good as it is
@Empathy- Opeth maybe overuses the growls on the first album, Orchid, but after that they are great. In perfect balance.

to be honest Damnation for me is the best album , because Akerfeldt dont use the death vocals, and the music is less metal than the others, Opeth sounds better without death voice

i like the growling aspects. Damnation was a boring album, and so was Deliverence. the mix of the 2 styles is what makes them a great band.

I'd say having the death metal vocals in Opeth's music makes it even better. If it didn't have any, I'm quite sure I'd feel that it's missing something.

Opeth is Opeth (like Drew said). If you like clean singing, then you can find another band with clean singing, leave Opeth just exactly like their are.

I don't really care. Opeth has done plenty of songs with only growls, like the song Blackwater Park that i just love. Opeth has done songs with no growls at all like Harvest or A Fair Judgement which i love even more. I enjoy the growls in Opeth, but there are some songs like Bleak which i think would be better with clean singing only. All in all, i really do not care what Opeth does.

It's perfect the way it is. Mikael Åkerfeldt is a rare case with being equally good at growls and clean vocals, would be a crime not to use that talent to its fullest.

Opeth is the only band with growls that i love.
Usually, i HATE growls, but mikael is such a good singer and most people i know concider him as the best growler in the world, and i agree!
it took me about 4 months(!!!!) to get into this band because of the growls, but it was worth it and i think they are one of the best bands today

Opeth are Opeth. Please don't try to shape them into your dream band ... the growls are an integral part of them. They cannot be removed without destroying what Opeth are.

I was originally scared away from Opeth because of said growling. But
recently, I've come to accept it as part of the music. Would I like it
better sans the growling? Probably, but not by much. Akerfeldt is very
talented.

Mikael's growls don't bother me, mainly because I can understand what he is "saying" that is, I can hear the lyrics. He is also a great vocalist with a clean voice. Opeth are the only death metal group I like, as I think they are talented and listenable compared to most others I have heard.

Have you ever heard of Dan Swano?
He balances growling and clean vocals just as good as Akerfeldt.

I'm well aware of Dan Swanö, Devin Townsend and Mike Patton's abilities, in fact I'm listening to Townsend's "Terria" this very minute. I'm just saying it's a rare ability to sing both types of vocals equally well, not claiming that Åkerfeldt is unique in any way in that regard.

Ghost Reveries is the perfect balance between the grunts and clean vocals .
So my choice is that it's alright as it is

I voted yes, I think Opeth is a great band musically and the singer has
a great voice. But if he would stop the barking I would finally be able
to sit trough an entire song...
I just can't enjoy the "death vocals" at all.

Growling, death vocals, barking, whatever you want to call them - they're ridiculous, they sound sh*t, and therefore I can't appreciate them, because there's nothing to appreciate. They cross the line that separates music from noise, imo.

The vocals are out of sync with the symphonic music of Opeth.
An analogy would be Britney Spears type vocals in the music of Napalm Death

I disagree with you. I'm no death vocal fanboy, but they have some value. There are simply places where only a good ol' death growl sounds right. The most repulsive feature of growls for me are how horribly placed extreme death bands use them. The vocalist never realize that every once in a while he needs to sing in rythmn with the song.

They are a fantastic band with the screams or growls or "death vocals". It adds to the flavor of the music. Prog to me is a musical journey, and Opeth have decided to take that journey. The "death vocals" only add a different dimension and character to the music. The great contrast between the screams (Some of the most tortured and intense, not like the barking of some sh*te Death Metal acts) and his "regular" (And very pleasant sounding voice) is incredible and makes the music more compelling. Very few bands who do the screams and singing also can do both well, or with conviction. Without either one, they just wouldn't be the same, and if he ever decided he was bored with one or the other, I hope he changes the name of the band.
Anyway, the interviews I've seen lead me to believe he has no intention of getting rid of them anyway...
This will probably kill any cred I really don't have anyway, but as far as separating the line between music and noise, well, I love harsh noise/experimental, too...so there you go...
