Tie between System of a Down and A Perfect Circle.  both amazing amazing bands.

NIN, QotSA are good too, and I used to like Foo fighters a whole lot.

Honorable mention for Tenacious D, but they are more of a comedy act than a band.

I used to think I liked audioslave, but then I realized they suck in a big big way (I'm pushing for a Rage reunion)

What are Iced Earth doing on the list?  There's no way they can be considered a "non prog mainstream modern rock band"

I Still consider Soad prog metal but hey... no one listens. So I still voted for 'em... They are something really strange... How could a alternative metal  band become so popular in a time when music is only created for proffit...

Cornell doesn't quite cut it with the old RATM boys - Zach de le rocha was a much better fit.

Probably one of the most influential alternative rock bands of the late 80's.Surfer Rosa and Doolittle are great albums.

Anyone here ever heard of Sunny Day Real Estate?

My views on some of these artists/bands:

System Of A Down: I voted for them. I really do hope they take a full approach at prog in the future. Talented people.

Audioslave: Good band... not as great as RATM and Soundgarden though. But, are any of those artists prog? I don't quite think so... with the exception of Tom Morello, who is a prog guitarist by all means.

    Tenacious D: Funny? kinda. Prog?

    Coldplay:

A Perfect Circle: A little proggy, too poppy. Not nearly as a good as Tool.

Beck: Crazy dude, I've gotta give him my props for being creative, but prog is not the first word that comes to my mind when thinking of him. Still, I might be wrong about this one.

Depends how you define "greatest" really...

I picked Beck, as the most original and inventive of the lot.

Coldplay undoubtedly sell more records than practically anyone else - I read somewhere they'd caught up with or overtaken the Beatles - so that must mean something. Their music is incredibly accessible, with very catchy melodies - and has a "nice" ambience that I find inoffensive enough. But I'd hate to rate them above Nine Inch Nails or System of a Down, who are both excellent.

The RHCPs are better than all of them, of course

Agreed. The first Audioslave album was such a huge disappointment compared to the expectations I had for the band. I love RATM and Soundgarden on their own, but there's not enough "oomph" in Audioslave imo, it gets dull.

From the list I'd say Queens of the Stone Age, my favourite band however is Monster Magnet, one of the coolest rock bands on the planet

I really liked ADF at first - but it gets a bit samey after a while.

I prefer "proper" dub like Augustus Pablo, the Scientist, early Sly and Robbie, almost anything recorded at King Tubby's, etc.

If you prefer a more "modern" sound to dub, then the On-U archives have loads of really well crafted dub, from Dub Syndicate and Prince Far-I, Mark Stewart and the Mafia etc. under Adrian Sherwood's expert production.

I picked APC, but would have gone for SOAD. But due to SOADs' increasingly watered down and poppy music (BYOB, anyone?), I overlooked them. Their first 2 or 3 albums were decent and mildly proggy in places (Streamline on Steal This Album) but this Mesmerise/Hypnotise bollocks is ridiculous. Most of their fans are little mini-mosher twats as well.

    I'm so prog, I clap in 9/8

Coldplay. Just solid, atmospheric Britpop. Don't like all these metal/punk bands much, either.

Life is like an avantgarde play because tuna.
