... and those aren't even all the works that Eno was involved with in the 1970s... What a busy decade! (I didn't put those albums where he contributed to one song, such as Genesis' THE LAMB LIES DOWN ON BROADWAY.) Most of these he played on, some he "merely" produced - and some he did both (such as the albums by Nico, Cale, and the Talking Heads). While his 70s work was amazing (and my favorite Eno period), it continued well into the 80s (APOLLO: SOUNDTRACKS, AMBIENT 4: ON LAND, MY LIFE IN THE BUSH OF GHOSTS), as well as amazing production work with the Talking Heads (REMAIN IN LIGHT) and U2 (THE UNFORGETTABLE FIRE, THE JOSHUA TREE, ACHTUNG BABY)... I love so many of these albums, but I have to go with ANOTHER GREEN WORLD. :-) A close second wold be Bowie's LOW; a close third would be a tie between TAKING TIGER MOUNTAIN and HERE COME THE WARM JETS. |

I have a mix where I took the instrumentals from LOW and HEROES to make one of the great (imaginary) instrumental albums of all time! :-) |

I voted for one of the most overlooked Bowie albums, which is Lodger. I really love that thing, and perhaps even moreso now that I'm older(think I bought it 15 years ago).
Also the interplay of ideas jumping back and forth between Eno and Bowie was at it's most natural methinks. So much so, that Bowie even got the ol electronics guru on board for what may seem like simple songs, yet they're far from that. One of the best examples of this is the closer Red Money(also sung by Iggy right around the same time, but then again Iggy was crashing in Bowie's Berliner apartment). Appears almost fog like with those guitar treatments along with the swirling synths, but it's still a somewhat simple song structure with recurring chorus and the works. Funny you should mention that, because I was thinking the exact same thing just last week, when I had a full blown Iggy/Stooges overdose. Although I must confess that I adore the trash can like production of both those albums. Eno could and probably would've done unspeakable things to a track like Dum Dum Boys. One of my absolute fave Iggy solo songs.

My favorite has always been Before and After Science, although Low is awfully close and all of Eno's vocal albums are five stars for me.

Tough call, lots of choices here, but ended up voting for Another Green World. I think of it as a benchmark of sorts for a whole area of music that this album seemed to invent. It's just a beautiful album all the way through. The Bogus Man is a monumental slice of music that does not get its deserved applause! Eno's twiddling synths are intense and majestic. For your Pleasure remains a high point. Kudos for Diamond Head and Taking Tiger Mountain ------------- I never post anything anywhere without doing more than basic research, often in depth. |

The Bogus Man, and indeed all of For Your Pleasure, is, as you say, monumental. In Every Dream Home a Heartache gives me chills every time, and I think the title track in underappreciated as well. -------------

Taking Tiger Mountain was always my favorite Eno. he has a lot of good stuff but it takes a while for any of it to really stand out to me

This poll shows what an amazingly vital artist Eno was and is. With all this great music, I have to go with the leader, Another Green World, which shows both the ambient and pop sides of him very well. Before and After Science also has one of my favorite songs ever - The Spider and I. Today it is 801 live which is excellent. But it could just as well have been one of the 2 Roxy albums. My favourite Eno song is probably Julie With.... from 'Before and after science'. ------------- Shake & bake. |
