Trombone player Albert Mangelsdorff died July 25th at the age of 76. He won the poll for best trombone player in the leading jazz magazines several times. His contribution to prog was his playing in the United Jazz and Rock Ensemble, which also featured Jon Hiseman of Colosseum on drums, Eberhard Weber of Colors on bass, Wolfgang Dauner of Et Cetera on keyboards, Barbara Thompson of Paraphernalia on saxes and flute, Ian Carr of Nucleus on trumpet, the late Volker Kriegel on guitar, Ack van Royen on trumpet and flugelhorn, Kenny Wheeler on flugelhorn and Charie Mariano on saxes, flute and nagaswaram. One of the best fusion bands ever.

Paraphernalia are somehow named right, because they include bits of this and bits of that in their music. But they are mostly a fusion act. And Barbara Thompson is no doubt a great woodwind player. Anyone who likes fusion should check them out.

Paraphenalia is/was Barbara Thompson's band (I'm sure I read alas she had something like MS and had stopped touring), with hubbie Jon Hiseman playing drums. Never really my favourite jazz rock/jazz fusion band, and over the 4 or so albums heard I guess they slipped away from jazz rock more into jazz fusion (sans much in the way of rock) - hence start by checking out the earlier albums. One novelty album was two sides of LP of Hiseman's drum solos recorded when touring as part of Paraphenalia.
