Aug. 1980. So legendary was this fart, 7 years later the band pens a tribute to it titled Elephant Talk.

Frank Zappa in an interview for the Village Voice on January 11, 1968:
"We recorded this thing last night -- I found some violins in a closet and I gave them to three of the guys,. None of them had ever played a violin before. They were making all these weird sounds on them, and then in the middle I got them to add some farts. It's a concerto for farts and violins."

December 1949, Glasgow; During music class Philip Shulman casually slips past a silent-but-deadly meanie. In a tragic miscalculation, it's not so silent, and causes Phil one of the most scarring episodes of his youth.

It is well known that VDGG sometimes gave poor performances. Some attribute this to them not being made for the live setting. What isn't well known is that David Jackson was quite the farter. Perhaps spurred on by the pressure of live performance, or perhaps it was just a weak gastrointestinal system, but either way often during performances. Usually, they were so strong and potent that both P Hammill and G Evens would get nausiated mid-performance. This caused the songs to suffer. (H Banton has poor olfactory glands and thus was mostly immune (unless they came in rapid succession)).

I used to get up early in the morning And listen to the rumbling of my bowels And as my sphincter was yawning That's when I'd practice my open vowels

March '72: After three nights of heavy eating, Phil Schulman releases an intense fart during rehearsals of the Three Friends material. Malcolm Mortimore was directly in the line of fire. Unfortunately, the fart was so immense in it's stench it sent MM into shock, which eventually led to a 5 day coma. He left the band shortly after.
Rumor has it that Phil was asked to leave shortly after MM was released from hospital but they worked out a deal where he could participate on the next album (which was already in the works).

August 1981, Montreal; Things come to a head just before the second leg of Rush's Moving Pictures tour when Alex and Neil have had enough and confront Geddy about his penchant for using bass notes to hide the sound of his wind. "We don't mind the smell," they insisted, "it's the dishonesty we can't handle".
