There are a few questions I have with certain guitar tones, mainly ones that are used by established artists.

I'm trying to find out what kind of tone Alex Lifeson used on Red Barchetta (the clean section), and the kind of tone Steve Rothery uses on the Clutching at Straws album, during the clean sections.

Sounds to me like Alex was using some compression and some chorus. Not much else. Not sure what amps he was using around Moving Pictures but I'm sure he hadn't move across to his ultra-clean Gallien-Krugers at that stage. To me it sounds like something you'd get out of a Roland JC120. Guitar wise I'd go for a Strat for that kind of tone, whack it through a decent valve amp for warmth, add a little compression and a healthy pinch of chorus and you should be halfway there. Maybe even a tiny amount of delay to get the fullness.

I had a feeling that a chorus would have to be somewhere in there, it really does sound fitting for that tone. Thanks for the suggestion, I'll give it a run.
