Honestly, when I saw the electric guitar and realized you were using a pick, I expected it to be awful, but I was obviously over-pessimistic, because it was very good!  You're definitely a very talented guitar player, and I can't give much more criticism than what you pointed out yourself. I would encourage you to learn to play it fingerpicked, like Howe did originally. And did you say you started that piece on Saturday? That's really impressive that you could pull it off like that in a week; Steve Howe himself says he still has difficulties playing it! Very nice!  I must've played the 2:15-2:24 bit five times in a row. Overall, I'm very impressed. Wish I could play that well. P.S.: 1:59-2:00 - oops.

thanks for the kind words guys. learning it his way would be a good challenge, but he does it with a pick and fingers simultaneously, right? although I'm pretty decent at fingerpicking itself from classical guitar lessons as a kid I've always had a lot of trouble doing the pick and fingers thing, but i guess that's a good reason to work on it haha. and yeah dayvenkirq that slip up is painful hehe, you'd think the part with just straight chord changes would be the easy part but i keep missing that last switch ------------- http://sumdeus.bandcamp.com/" rel="nofollow - Sumdeus - surreal space/psych/prog journeys |

Very impressive, congratulations! you have the chords, progressions and "mini-solo picked lines" already very well mastered. Can't criticize much honestly. If I'm nit-picky I would say that in the fragment 1:40 to 1:48 you hit the trebble stroke (the 1st string note) on the 3rd beat when I think it should be on the 2nd beat (it's still a down-stroke but it gets a feel of off-beat stroke, if you would strike your right hand at half speed it would then be on an up-stroke). And of course an important element of the original song is the fingerpicking technique, but you do well in leaving that for later, what you have achieved so far is already very good!

Some seasoned guitarists would get the impression that the piece would be more difficult played with a pick. Your presentation of the piece draws interesting conclusions. Regarding right hand picking technique ...there is a growth experience that takes your mind to strange new levels. Flaminco, Classical, Ragtime, etc....It forces you to strip bare of your other electric guitar techniques and both worlds become united..and like Steve Howe right? You already have a nice technique so I'm betting it would come easy for you. Nice playing! |

thanks again for all the kind words guys! and yeah toddler i get what you mean, just to clarify i am by no means one of those dudes who just plays everything on electric, like i said i used to have classical guitar lessons and currently my main guitar is an acoustic 12 string. woulda played the song on that but it's missing a couple of strings at the moment. could anyone clear up for me whether Howe did it all fingerpicking or fingers + pick? ah so it is pick + fingers... honestly not sure if i'm gonna go through with learning that, it's always been such a pain in the ass for me and doesn't seem worth it when i could make it sound good with just a pick or just fingers

I mean obviously any technique is beneficial but i mean it doesn't seem worth it going through all that trouble when i can already make it sound good. maybe i'm just being a chump, *shrug* i'm pretty lazy and difficult when it comes to the technicalities of guitar and music because i'm so much more interested in the actual music that worrying about little technical things doesn't seem significant enough for me. also if i was fingerpicking the whole thing i would just use my thumb for the bass strings and i don't think it would necessarily be any louder or sharper if i used a pick instead of my thumb ------------- http://sumdeus.bandcamp.com/" rel="nofollow - Sumdeus - surreal space/psych/prog journeys |

i mean as far as loudness I think i could do as loud or as quiet as i wanted to do with either pick or thumb.. as far as the sound, sure, they are different, but I don't think one is inherently better than the other. I've always really dug the twangy sound you get from the thumb

^If you want a sharper bassline, you can always grow out the nail on your thumb and pick with it (doesn't have to be super long, just enough to catch the string). In fact, if you are interested in pursuing fingerpicking (at least classical fingerpicking) at all, it would be a good idea to grow all the fingernails on your picking hand a little bit.

Alright! The electric guitar and pick did give me lower expectations at first too, but you played it very well. It looks like you were able to play it that way unhindered, though perhaps doing without a pick would ultimately clean it up a bit.
