Who's your favourite person, which is almost the exclusive author of all songs, overshadowing all the other band members and imprinting his unmistakable face to his bands or projects?

Very good question and a difficult one to answer.

I'll not vote as I don't know much about vander, or Toby Driver, but out of the others I tempted to say Fripp. He strikes me as being the very heart of KC in terms of the approach to making the music they did. I get the impression it was Fripps philosophy to making music that underpinned the bands writing.

Yes, I feel that I may seem ridiculous to someone, but I adore only one God and the King together - and this is Robert Fripp.Clap

Vander's my favorite, but I think the "strongest personality" in the sense of egomaniacal control over the music would have to be Frankie Zappa, or possibly his wife.

Definitely Zappa. Not just in prog: In rock music in general.

I think Fripp, but Waters and Anderson are very close, can you imagine them in the same band with Emerson keyboardist?

Peter Gabriel, I'd say.
No, that's not true. Tony Banks could never be dominated.
Fripp then. Yes, I'll vote for Fripp.
Or Jon Anderson? Yes, I think Anderson is the man. Peter Banks and Tony Kaye have bitten the dust with him.
Or no, even better: Ritchie Blackmore. It wasn't easy for people being in one band with him.
Well, I'll vote other.

Ian Anderson is Jethro Tull and God help anyone who disagrees with him.

Why are you even asking when there are too many egos in the same group?

Right now, Fripp or Hammill.
Since Hammill has less votes, I'll help him climb.

Quoted for truth, although I'd like to vote for Miles Davis, but somehow that wouldn't be fair even if he is on PA...

Now that I'm reading the title of the thread carefully, I'm definitely gonna take more time to think about it.

Now, how did Ian get four votes? Who started all this talk of whether or not the size of the flute matters? Does that constitute a great personality?

How's that? I thought it was Roger who put the "dick" in the "dicktator".

I think strongest personality has to go to Uncle Frank although my personal favorite would be Ian Anderson.  I don't think I would have gotten along well with Zappa, but I think I could have a good conversation with Ian about a number of things including possibly the size of our flutes (I would love to show him my Native American cedar flute).

Ian Anderson becasue there is no Jethro Tull without him - and he has no problems writing liner notes to the albums and making appearances on exclusive youtube interviews. And he writes articles too in prog mags.

Special mention to Hammill and Zappa who made an indelible mark on prog rock, impossible to ignore.

Talking about Jon in the 70's ---I have read many accounts of how he pulled the strings in the group and pushed to remove members and bring in other's--Bill Bruford has some stories in his bio. I have an old collection of Melody Makers and He said in an interview in Melody Maker that members must, "pee or get off the pot" Smile

I never thought of Zappa as a person who was forcing him self too much on the rest of the band, but I could be wrong.
On the other hand I read several interviews with KC's members stating Fripp is kind of an impossible dick. That's the reason so many musicians have passed through King Crimson, and in 1975 when Fripp decided it's all over, that was it until he decided differently.

There was an interview for the 40th anniversary of CTTE lately, in which Bruford talked a bit about Jon's approach. In a nutshell, it was: Either you take my songs, no matter how awful they are, and make something good out of them, or you come up with better songs.

Just some double entendres, amigo, based on some earlier comments.  Wink  And yes, I do have a real Native American cedar flute but I don't know how to play it properly.  I can get some good sounds out of it though.  Anderson, of course, usually plays a standard transverse flute.  Cedar flutes tend to be thicker and shorter while transverse flutes are longer and narrow.  Like people, flutes come in a variety of sizes.

As a matter of fact the way you explain Jon's aproach doesn't sound bad at all.

Drat. I thought we were voting on which personality is the strongest, which, of course, is Frank Zappa, but he is far from my favorite.

All of them have "strong personalities", but I will have to vote Wilson, because:

Uncle Bob is retired (so are Ian and Roger)
Uncle Frank R.I.P. is no longer with us
I don't appreciate Emerson, Vander and Morse all that much, and I seriously dislike Hammill
I don't know who Toby Driver is

I, too, think that proved to be a good aproach. Much the same as Waters' for The Wall I think. The other members, and Ezrin, have testified how "excrutiating" the demos were to listen to, but together they managed to make a rather brilliant dubble album out of them.

Sorry my bad, I thought the latest conflict between the two led to Barre's dismissal by Anderson. But no they just parted ways in the meantime. That's why TAAB2 wasn't a JT album. Thanks.

Ian next up.
