Indeed. Keep safe if your on the US east coast.
I came here with the specific intention of starting a thread on this, as it looked so serious. I guess parts of the US are more than used to this kind of devastation, but am I right in thinking the hurricanes are a) not normally this big and b) don't often affect NYC?
Anyway, I don't know if this will disrupt the election and what effect that may have on either candidate. Let's just hope the casualty figures are very low.

I heard from JJLehto (Brian) earlier and he's in New Jersey. He said
his lights had started flickering already. Hopefully everyone keeps
safe.
I don't know who exactly is in the east on these forums. I
think Patrick is, as he's in Pennsylvania. Mike (Bluesaga from old) is
also in New Jersey I believe.
So I hope you keep safe. Don't do anything silly!

I think its ferocity depends on what happens if/when it meets the storm front coming in from the north.
Whatever happens, anyone in the affected area reading this - be careful people - hope all's well.

I'm in Central Ontario and the worst for us is supposed to be 80 km winds and lots of rain tonight. Further south(130kms) in Toronto they are supposed to get 100 km winds and rain. Hopefully Brian(JJLehto) stays safe because i heard New Jersey is supposed to get the worst of this.

It's been windy yesterday and today, but nothing major yet by me. The shoreline is already flooded and the storm hasn't hit land yet. I have no school today, and probably no work tomorrow, so I'm just going to be chilling online for as long as I can, then when the power goes out (hopefully it won't) I'll work on some homework.

We've got 20-30 mile per hour winds here in Michigan with gusts up to 40-50 MPH. Not hurricane force but still pretty nasty, especially since the temperature is in the low 40's. It sounds as though the waves on Lake Michigan and Lake Huron are getting upwards of 20 to 30 feet high.

Got sent home from work 3 hours early. Came home to a giant tree blocking my main way home and bringing down a powerline. Took a detour, two power lines down on the way. Pull into the driveway, five trees down in my yard alone, one was about 20 feet from hitting. Yikes.
But hey, somehow we still have power! ![Big smile Big smile](smileys/smiley4.gif)

Milk, bread, and toilet paper all disappear at the sound of a storm around here in NC ![Smile Smile](smileys/smiley1.gif) . It mainly hit the Outer Banks today with usual flooding they get, it appears out northeast cities will get the major hit with Sandy. Flooding and saturated soil with trees falling will most likely be one of the main concerns. Also hear 3 feet of snow expected in some of the high elevation areas in WV, bound to cause problems. Hopes and prayers for all up there in harms way!

EDIT: Heard back. He's okay. Nothing but a lack of power and probably annoyingly loud wind.
Everything fine in Philly for the most part. I have some friends without power and a tree fell into my grandmom's yard, but nothing significant really has happened. Worst thing for me was a leaky window that I'll have to calk.

We were supposed to get the tail end here in Central Ontario but other than higher than normal winds not much happened. The rain stopped around 10pm or so and the wind wasn't even bad enough to keep me up through the night. My neighbour probably doesn't appreciate all my leaves being on his yard though.
Sadly a lady in Toronto did die from being hit with a flying sign last night. I feel for you guys on the north east coast. I'm sure the big cleanup starts today and what a job that will be.

Railroad tracks which are next to the turnpike in the North Jersey area were flooded and water currents pushed box cars on to the turnpike. Not sure of the exact area? It could be Monmouth county. In Ocean county there are houses sitting in the middle of either rt. 36 or rt, 35 which was a message my sister-in-law left just before her power was cut. We are lucky! I woke up at 8:00 pm to make breakfast for the kids and nothing was evident. No fallen trees, no floods, no power outages. A few surrounding towns in Salem County are without power. Sandy must have changed it's course of direction an hour or 2 prior to slamming Salem county and spreading to Philadelphia. There was not much of an impact in our area so I'm not quite sure just how and when it could have shifted. We are extremely lucky and I feel just horrible for people on the east coast who suffered it's wrath. The news reports are insane!

Weather buff, excuse my jizz explostion
For you poor souls who can't see me on FB...
I am fine as is everyone I know.
Been without power for 44 hours now, and that's been a pain in the ass, but compared to the 20,000 stranded in Hoboken ready to kill each other, or our entire shorline which has been wiped out...I'll take the pain in the ass.
Work was actually a relief! I have internet, warmth, and a way to charge my phone. Though thanks to downed trees and power lines, it took me 3 hours and a road lanyrinth to get to work.
My area was pretty much just a windstorm, seems gusts did hit over 75 mph here!
Not much else to say: we have all seen the devistation on the Jershey Shoreline and the flooding in NYC. The pictures of Seaside Heights (with the destroyed pier and roller coaster in the ocean) were particuralry startling, that was my childhood beach. Its strange when it finally happens to you...and as a weather buff/nerd I knew unfortunately this was a matter of time. Sadly, many probably never thought it could happen.
I was lucky enough to meet Jim Cantore (who I think most Americans now know thanks to Katrina) 7 years ago, and he spoke of his great fear: A major storm hitting the NYC area. Even a Cat 1 could be quite destructive, given the cities geography/the regions large population. Point being: This was not a freak incident. Rare perhaps, but something that was well known was bound to happen. Same with Katrina, and time will tell when a destructive storm directly hits Miami, or Houston ![Cry Cry](https://www.progarchives.com/forum/smileys/smiley19.gif)
I could go on and on, if anyone wants to talk weather I'm always game, for now I'll just say I wish all those drastically impacted all the best. Especially those on the shore, and maybe accept that with the current storm cycle we are in...it's maybe best to move a bit off the water

Ah whadya know? Just got word we have power back.
45 hours without, some branches in our yard, a few shingles off the roof and someone's gutter on our porch. Really no complaints here at all, just thankful the storm didn't hit farther north.

Very similar case here. Less than 20 miles south, complete and utter devastation of the RI shoreline. Where I am, a bit of wind and rain. We were very lucky.

Indeed, seems Cape May all the way to Cape Cod took quite a pounding.
I never was too worried about inland, though southern Jersey was pretty beaten up.
I'm thankful we had very little rain both leading to the storm and almost none during it.
We were saturated when Irene came, and then dumped another 10 inches on us and the flooding was disasterous for large areas. ![Cry Cry](https://www.progarchives.com/forum/smileys/smiley19.gif)
It is nutty NJ didn't have a direct landfalling hurricane in 108 years, then 2 years in a row. I wish I could access models and data, see if this was just bad luck or if weather patterns could make this a more regular occurance...

Coastline definitely got altered from this storm. And now fires seem to be the next most dangerous thing. Open gas lines still spewing gas...catching all sorts of things on fire. Esp down at the NJ shore where the gas lines aren't connected to anything. NYC (and Long Island) also hard hit. I imagine the blizzard in West Virgina will also be rather bad. Going to be discussing this one for many many years.

Of course 3 feet of snow can be packed and moved, as we know well in NJ, 3 feet of water...not so much!
Well Andy last winters made up for the one before it...if you recall it snowed every weekend...including a couple of 2 foot blizzards in there. By the end snow was piled up 6 feet high in our yard and there was honestly nowhere left to put it! Maybe some moderation would be nice this time around mother nature

I'm glad everyone is okay Phil, and thanks for those pictures they are shocking. To see how much sand has been washed up is incredible, and the water damage must be beyond comprehension right now. I guess they will be scrambling to get as much cleaned up as they can before winter sets in.

Thanks. ![Hug Hug](smileys/smiley31.gif) And they are. Some of the damage looks like it's straight out of a movie or a midwester tornado outbreak. The jersey shore certainly got the worst of it. And absolutely. Towns essentially covred in sand. They are bringing in snow plows to clear as much as possible, push it back to make dunes and gain access to places. And I can't even imagine how much time it will take to get it back to somewhere near normal (or at least usable). There are only two ways onto that part of NJ, one of which is completely destroyed and the other indefinatedly closed til some of the water ebbs away and the authorities deem it safe. There is something positive though...homes in that area were built in the early 60s and not that well. Hopefully when they are rebuilt they will be built stronger and up the most recent code. And if this hurricane hit in early June instead of the end of the october all those buisness would have lost the entire summer of revenue. Hopefully something can be put together before the next beach season.

From ROSFest 2013 email I received today:
Our thoughts go out to the millions of people who's lives have been affected by this tragedy. A special thought goes out to the members of US band Jolly, recently announced for ROSfest 2013. They lost their practice locale, studio and all of their equipment in the storm. If we have understood the band's Facebook updates correctly, drummer Louis Abramson also lost all his personal possessions and his private home. We're in contact with the band's management about their situation, and will come back with more information when we receive it.

Power is back, and so life is slowly returning to normal here slightly NW of Philadelphia.
Pictures of South Jersey are just sickening...my heart breaks for those people, this is years of rebuilding.
Also, my wife's cousin lives in Hoboken - she's fine but she parked her car in an underground garage before the storm - now completely submerged. ![Ouch Ouch](smileys/smiley18.gif)

Totally. The two that are most shocking for me are the Mantoloking Bridge shot and the one from Seasside Heights with the roller coaster in the ocean. (Esp since I"m quite familiar with both areas)

I assume that roller coaster sitting in the ocean is the Jet Star...my first ever roller coaster and one of my earliest memories![Cry Cry](smileys/smiley19.gif)
What's really disturbing is this was just a Cat 1 storm. While rare, it's very possible for a Cat 2 (and slight chance but even a Cat 3) to make it up this far...thankfully the worst case scenario never happens but it's a very scary thought.
Thankful in the grand scheme the damage is light compared to a Katrina for example, but still at least 160 people have died from Sandy and they say total damage could be 20-50 billion dollars.
Hopefully we all will learn from this and maybe the Northeast will finally start to prepare. No expert on the details but it does seem like overall weather changes could make this a more regular occurance.

Anyone question the wisdom of using resources and authorities time running the Marathon when people are still trapped in apartments with no power and dwindling water?
And please tell me it's just a rumor that tradesmen who want to help in Jersey are being turned away because they are not union.

I think it's rather stupid. A postponment (even a week) would have been better, even if it was just a PR thing. And according to the nj Gov. there was a bad info transaction bewteen one group of workers from Alabama (who somehow thought you needed to be union to work in NJ) and some company in NJ (or some person...not really sure on the details of this). None of the power companies or unions make that a requirment and willl not turn anyone any from helping.

Well thankfully the powers that be finally caved to massive, and I mean massive, public outcry and postponed the marathon. For so many reasons it was a terrible idea to try and do and this doesnt make anyone look better. They just finally are doing what they should've...
Edit: NVM. I also heard that story about non union workers being turned away and it enraged me, but sounds like this was not the case.
