There is no actual meaning to Atom Heart Mother.
The band just came up with the name after seeing an article in the
newspaper entitled "Mother Receives Atomic Heart" or something to that
effect (can't remember exact headline). They thought it was an
intriguing title.
The name of the album also has nothing to do with with the cow on its
cover (Lulubelle III), which was the brainchild of Storm Thorgerson.
------------- Marmalade...I like marmalade.

------------- "Death to Utopia! Death to faith! Death to love! Death to hope?" thunders the 20th century. "Surrender, you pathetic dreamer.
"No" replies the unhumbled optimist "You are only the present."

The song reminds me of a war in the middle ages between two groups. The defenders in a castle and the invaders trying to break through. The main theme especially reminds me of this.
The main theme also strangely reminds me of a blimp flying through the air, sometime in the twenties when they were more common. I guess I just have an overactive immagination.

Thanks for that Cluster One. I never knew the meaning but i figured there had to be something deep that Floyd would have thought of. I find it funny that I'm completely wrong - that there's nothing at all to it!

Floyd were getting labeled with the "space music" tag, and Waters, I think,
wanted to get away from that. They were looking for an image for the
album that was not suggestive of sci-fi, technology, etc, but rather more
down to earth. Thus, the cow.

To me, AHM evokes a distant, dark and frightening country. The brass fanfares, menacing atmosphere, and the title, as much as anything, always put me in mind of old Soviet Eastern Europe.

I guess the opening sequence of Live At Pompeii must have crushed all
their dreams of ever being able to get rid of the "space" label.

Hopefully we should appreciate that given points in time are not so significant as the nature of what is impressed on the mind, and how it is retained and used.

Alan's Psycadelic Breakfast does the same image for me.
I'm telling you people, the story is deffinetly about a blimp flying around in 1917 during WWI, it is going through an amazing adventure trying not to get shot down by German forces.

AHM was so called becuase of the newspaper artice, but was named thus becuase they recorded a version for the BBC (rather good cut!) and didn't have a proper name, they had previously called it THE AMAZING PUDDING. Some bootleggers call the live renditions without the orchestra (Montreux Casino example, or KQED) as The Amazing Pudding. Although the orchestral version was deputed at the Bath festival 9black and white footage recently surfaced btw... get looking) still called 'under the tentative working title of The Amazing Pudding'. Hope this helps!

Actually, that opening sequence is a relatively new addition, only available on the Director's Cut.

Yep, that directors cut opening ruined Echoes for me. I loved the orriginal with the slow zoom in of the colloseum. On the DC version, there is only about 5 seconds of zoom in, that it doesn't even sync up to the music. Just listen, there is Roger playing bass, but on the video he is not there, and the bass is still lying there.
DC ruined some of the songs IMO. Atleast the orriginal version is put on the DVD as an extra with the footage fixed, a little.
