So Rush has been nominated for the Hall of Fame  http://www.rollingstone.com/music/pictures/rock-and-roll-hall-of-fame-meet-the-2013-nominees-20121004" rel="nofollow - http://www.rollingstone.com/music/pictures/rock-and-roll-hall-of-fame-meet-the-2013-nominees-20121004

The following quote is from http://www.ctvnews.ca/entertainment/rush-nominated-for-the-rock-and-roll-hall-of-fame-1.982846" rel="nofollow - http://www.ctvnews.ca/entertainment/rush-nominated-for-the-rock-and-roll-hall-of-fame-1.982846

An excerpt, albeit a longer excerpt than I should use, from that article posted under fair dealing/ fair use policies:

Originally posted by Chris Talbott of AP Chris Talbott of AP wrote:

Rush, Deep Purple, Public Enemy and N.W.A. are among the group of first-time nominees for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

They join returnees Heart, Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, Randy Newman, Donna Summer and Kraftwerk among the 15 artists vying for entry.

Even in the iPod age, the list of nominees up for induction in 2013 is as eclectic as they come. Nominees differ wildly in sound, origin and influence, ranging from the enduring prog rock of Canadian trio Rush and Procul Harum to German proto-electronica act Kraftwerk, the disco of Chic and Summer to the New Orleans funk of The Meters and the blues of Albert King and the Paul Butterfield Blues Band.

Motown also is represented by first-ballot entries The Mavelettes.

Joel Peresman, President and CEO of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation, acknowledged the extreme variety of this year's nominee class in a Thursday news release.

"The definition of 'rock and roll' means different things to different people, but as broad as the classifications may be, they all share a common love of the music," Peresman said. "This year we again proudly put forth a fantastic array of groups and artists that span the entire genre that is 'rock and roll."'....

As a Canadian, sorry to be so unpatriotic, but go Kraftwerk!

It's nice to see Rush nominated too (I know many will say, it's about freaking time).  There's a number of acts for PAers to get excited about.

The non-inclusion of Rush has been a joke for so long that I hope if they get inducted they just go up there to say a laconic "thanks" and not much else.

Shocked to learn Kraftwerk are not in yet.

RUSH deserves this honor hardcore. Long overdue if you ask me. Also their latest work A CLOCKWORK ANGELS is brilliant. Very good album. Best since counterparts by far.

^Yeah, and where's Jethro Tull? Where's King Crimson? Just taking a quick look at some of the artists who are in, and who's not, should make it clear to all fans of rock that RaRHoF is just a big, fat joke. It's not something which should be taken seriously.

Exactly. It's not about Rock and Roll, it's just showbiz.

Personally, I'd very much like to see Kraftwerk nominated for their first trail blazing albums Tone Float, l, ll, Ralf & Florian and Radio aktivitaet, - but I sincerely doubt it. I am almost certain that they're nominated for their later fully electronic albums which I happen to adore as well. BUT we're talking rock n roll hall of fame here right?.....?
Considered for those first albums, Kraftwerk remain one of the most important acts in the development of what later became 'Krautrock', which again had a huge impact on punk through their more motorik laden outfits such as Can and LA Dusseldorf. Kraftwerk is basically where all of that started, and that should be the sole reason for including them into this imaginary castle in the clouds. Not a later more popular version of the band, that by then had completely abandoned the rock mould. Seems rather daft methinks...

Also: Big shout out to The Paul Butterfield Blues Band!! I love East West.

I know it's been said a few times before and this post of mine would be redundant, but ... here it goes:

And there ain't no f$#king way Kraftwerk are gonna have their spot in the RnR HoF. And they ain't gonna be there on the ceremony. C'mon ... you know Hutter and Schneider. They are too clever for that. They have their own opinions and values. I'm pretty sure they'd be clever enough to refuse to show up.

I just checked and other important artists have been snubbed including:

Devo, Electric Light Orchestra, Emerson Lake & Palmer, Peter Gabriel, King Crimson, Yes.

No Iron Maiden, no Judas Priest, No Deep Purple!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

If you look at the list
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Rock_and_Roll_Hall_of_Fame_inductees" rel="nofollow - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Rock_and_Roll_Hall_of_Fame_inductees
Theres hardly a shred of prog- its all junk rock mostly and from the nostalgic past. Run DMC is in but Rush is not!
Beastie Boys are in but Kiss is not....
Tom Waits is in but no Rush........
Abba are in but No RUNAWAYS - they pioneered girl rock groups

we have on the list: in chronological order of being inducted

The Beatles - prog related on some album but really.... no surprise they are so essential

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Who" rel="nofollow - The Who  - again related to prog in certain songs - again just essential rock

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Jimi_Hendrix_Experience" rel="nofollow - The Jimi Hendrix Experience  - some tracks have prog elements but no surprises hes in

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Doors" rel="nofollow - The Doors  - More prog related stuff but essential of course to rock

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Led_Zeppelin" rel="nofollow - Led Zeppelin  - prog related - essential to rock totally

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frank_Zappa" rel="nofollow - Frank Zappa  - perhaps the most proggy act so far but more into jazz fusion as we know

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Bowie" rel="nofollow - David Bowie  - prog related again but no surprise hes in

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jefferson_Airplane" rel="nofollow - Jefferson Airplane - lovely to see these psych proggers in

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pink_Floyd" rel="nofollow - Pink Floyd  - the first full blown prog band in so far, but they are so popular they had to get in

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Santana_%28band%29" rel="nofollow - Santana  - nice to see these jazz fusion guys in

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Queen_%28band%29" rel="nofollow - Queen  - did you doubt it? the masters of rock

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steely_Dan" rel="nofollow - Steely Dan  - well there ya go

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Traffic_%28band%29" rel="nofollow - Traffic  - nice to see some proto prog

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Sabbath" rel="nofollow - Black Sabbath  - ah yes that must have pleased Ozzy - they should be there but so should Deep Purple!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miles_Davis" rel="nofollow - Miles Davis  - Miles Smiles at this legendary inductee

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metallica" rel="nofollow - Metallica  - yay two horns up for the sole thrash metal act inductee

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Genesis_%28band%29" rel="nofollow - Genesis  - gotta be happy with that but they snubbed Peter Gabriel as a sole artist

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Small_Faces" rel="nofollow - Small Faces / http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Faces_%28band%29" rel="nofollow - Faces  - last years sole prog related act - sheesh!

King Crimson are definitely deserved of the Hall of Fame but I mention Kiss becuase of their influence to hard rock - most artists cite them as a major influence, and they virtually owned the period between 77 and 81 they were so popular they ruled the world. It all went pear shaped when they cut the hair and released Elder, tho I liked it. Then they took the makeupoff and it was downhill from there. The fact they are still together and have a new album shows their longevity and they are still quite popular.

Maybe some day, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame voters will take their heads out of their behinds and acknowledge that the early seventies concert scene was dominated by acts like Yes, ELP and Jethro Tull.

Once they admit true prog acts (Gemesis only got in because they became pop darlings), they might stop being the Rock & Roll Hall of Shame (or Hall of Lame).

As usual I don't care one bit for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, but it seems odd to induct Rush before King Crimson and Yes. Seems to me like they caved and put them on the ballot to shut up all those Rush fans who had been complaining for years.

Rush has had far more commercial success than both King Crimson and Yes.  Aren't they in the top 10 all time for total album sales for a rock band or something like that?  i.e. they have more "fame" than either King Crimson or Yes.

RUSH is easily the best band to come out of Canada. I am from CANADA, and I have to say that a lot of music sucks here when it comes to prog. RNR HOF reminds me of the TIme's list of the "Most Influentual Women", whenever that was? If I remember correctly, Dilma Rouseff and Pippa Middleton were either sharing the page, or close to each other.

As a reminder: Dilma runs a country with 200 million people and $2.3T economy; Pippa wears expensive clothes.

Recognition is important sometimes. I feel that this induction is important because it shows that more people are being made aware of the skillful, masterful musicianship that is Rush! I'm glad for them. And yes, king crimson should be next.

Rush WILL be inducted because of the public vote. If they don't get inducted, Jann Wenner will lead the way to crap bands like N.W.A. or the Marvalletes, which had no influence in Rock and roll. Same case for Deep Purple. But I also want Kraftwerk to be inducted, even though they are electronic, they are influental and innovative in the new wave and the progressive sub-genres. Good news !!!

If Genesis got in because of their "pop" success, then they would have been in a long time ago. I think the boxsets that celebrated their entire(with the exception of From Genesis To Revelation) had a lot to with that. Rolling Stone ever gave a great review for the Peter Gabriel era boxset. Enjoy those sour grapes, my friend.

Rush, Kraftwerk, Deep Purple and Procol Harum are the prog/prog-related nominees for 2013. They all deserve induction, IMO, but I bet at least one of them won't get in.

Nope. Sorry. Can't do it.

How about Saga?  Not really "elite".  Maybe Godspeed You! Black Emperor.  (probably will be considered more prog than Rush 100 years from now).

Saga is good, but yeah they are not on that major elite level like RUSH.

Congrats Rush!

Yup....They are in.....here is a quote from Geddy Lee. Very respectful as I expected them to act......class act for sure, but with some added humor which is perfect.

He added, "It was a cause [Rush fans] championed," he says. "I'm very relieved for them and we share this honor with them, for sure."

The band also issued an official statement: "We are honored to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The 3 of us are especially appreciative of our loyal fans whose support and dedication has gone a long way to making this possible. P.S. And special thanks to our moms for voting 6000 times!"

Not to mention Donna Summer.  Not voting in Deep Purple before voting in a disco star, a rap star, and a movie jingo star (I guess, I really don't know what Randy Newman does) is pretty stupid.  Maybe these all fall under the rock umbrella, but I've never considered them to be rock artists.  Although I think that I do remember someone saying that Donna Summer actually has an album that might qualify as a prog album.  Shocked

I'm with you, in that all I know Randy Newman to be famous for is the main theme songs for all three Toy Story movies, and maybe light comedy movie at some point.

Yes isn't inducted yet, and they've been around longer. But I find the RnR Hall of Fame has 0 credibility. Their name alone doesn't reflect all the bands and artists included in it.

Congrats to Rush but Purple not being in is frankly ridiculous.

Posted By: geneyesontle

An OK year. Still better than the past year. And maybe why Deep Purple and Kraftwerk are not inducted is because Deep Purple said that the RnRHoF is for old men, and that Kraftwerk would not give a s**t about the award and that both band are maybe disliked by the commite. But Rush being inducted sure rocks. Now for the other inductees:

Heart: They were a great female rock band, and the fourth most deserving inductee in my opinion because of their early albums. They changed rock n' roll. And they proved that women can write great rock songs and can rule a band. Some of their albums aren't good but they deserve to be in there.

Randy Newman: Ok, he's a great composer but IN THE ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME !!! He isn't rock n' roll.

Public Enemy: OH !!! Another rap band. Adding a very bad choice this year.

Donna Summer: An important disco artist that isn't rock.

Albert King: An important forgotten blues man.

So, in the list of deserving artists (that is my opinion):
Yes: Rush, Heart
Borderline Yes: Albert King
No: Randy Newman, Donna Summer
Don't believe the hype of this artist (that's a big NO): Public Enemy

I say fourth for Heart because they are ten times more known than Procol Harum

Rush are okay---there is a sameness to their sound that bother's me---but in keeping with the joke that is the Rock and Roll hall of fame---the fact that prog pioneers like Yes are not even considered seems strange to me. I mean would Rush sound like they do if Yes hadn't come before them? I mean even Rush has admitted that Yes were a huge influence when they were young guns coming out of Canada.

So let me get this straight. RUN DMC is in, but not KRAFTWERK? The rap group is in, but not the synth wizards that created so much influence for metal bands to use more keyboards in their overall sound??? What kind of cosmic bunny hole did navigate into? What the hell is happening?

Kraftwerk were not a rock band but they had a huge impact on rock bands to use electronics in their music. Just look at their album covers. Donna Summer had a good voice but wasn't as influental as Kraftwerk. Their music is unique, experimental and fun. They are deserving.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is the stupidest idea in the entire history of stupid ideas. What's next, an Artists' Hall of Fame? Will Rembrandt get in, or won't he? Go Van Gogh! We can have cheerleaders in uniform and stadiums with marching bands. I say this, having once found myself in Cleveland and accidentally wandering over to what turned out to be the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. What the hell, I thougth, and had a wander in. Cool place to visit. That's not my point. Call it the Rock & Roll Museum. But a Hall of Fame? Perish the idea! Ugh, Americans!!!!

You know something, I totally agree. I don't care anymore. The whole rock and roll hall of fame concept is so inconsistant and doesn't make sense because it's run by monkeys. Actually the progressive music awards is where it's at. Rush beat out Nightwish's Immaginarium for album of the year. Now there is something to cheer about.

Happy for Rush.  Actually, I'm happy for Public Enemy too.  They're not rock, but the precedent was set years ago (arguably from the start) that the voters don't need to vote in rock bands.   I can live with it.

I feel the same way.  While I don't care for non-rock acts getting into the HoF, Public Enemy getting in is okay by me.  They were cool in their own way and very influential and actually very intelligent to top it off (unlike today's rap/pop candy crap).  As long as Rush got in, I'm happy (yet, I also would've been fine had they not, since they'd been snubbed for so long).
