Well...not everybody considers Nightwish to be prog, but they're on here...and the Anette vs Tarja debate has come up in the forum a few times, so I guess this is relevant.
Press statement on Monday:
"Another chapter of the Nightwish story has ended today. Nightwish and Anette Olzon have decided to part company, in mutual understanding, for the good of all parties involved.
In recent times it has become increasingly obvious that the direction and the needs of the band were in conflict, and this has led to a division from which we cannot recover.
Nightwish has no intention of cancelling any upcoming shows, and as a result we have decided to bring in a substitute vocalist starting in Seattle 1.10.2012. Her name is Floor Jansen from The Netherlands (ex-After Forever, ReVamp), and she has graciously stepped in to help us complete the Imaginaerum world tour.
We are all strongly committed to this journey, this vehicle of spirit, and we are sure that this will lead to a brighter future for everyone.
We forever remain excited about the adventures to come, and we are extremely proud of the two beautiful albums and the wonderful shows we shared together."
Will the new liaison become permanent, I wonder...

Well ! Shocking news !
I saw them in Mtl last month and it was marvelous !! Anette seemed very fit to the band/music.
There will be again a hiring process, like for Anette.

I personally think this will be good for Nightwish. I never understood why they would replace a soprano with a three octave range and an operatic singing style with an alto who sings through her nose in more of a rock style. That, to me, would be like replacing James Labrie with an emo singer. Totally changed the dynamic of the band.

Hmmm - Don't know about that.
When After Forever disbanded in 2009, Floor formed her own band 'ReVamp', and so far just one album has been released (though they are apparently working on a second for release in the spring of next year). If the remainder of the Imaginaerum World Tour goes well, and she feels at ease with the band, then I have a sneaky feeling that they might not need to go through that long drawn-out hiring process again. They certainly wouldn't find anyone better, and I reckon Floor probably misses the action she saw fronting a headline act like After Forever (the split up of that band was after all more of a 'drifting apart' after a long lay-off to assesss the health of vocalist and guitarist Sander Gommans than a genuine bust-up). This might just be a 'marriage made in Heaven' for both Nightwish and Floor...
We shall see!

Hi folks, my first post on here :)
Surprised by this but I must admit Imaginaerium never really clicked with me. I don't know where the "direction and the needs of the band" will be in the future, whether there will be a return to their previous sound, but as a longterm fan the Imaginaerium tour was the first time since I started listening to Nightwish in 2001/2002 that I havn't rushed to get tickets as soon as they're on sale. In fact I never bothered. I really enjoyed Dark Passion Play, but did anyone else find Imaginaerium a bit dull or reckon it'll click with time? Perhaps Anette leaving spells a return for Tarja?
I think having Nightwish on progarchives is fine, in particular considering some of their multipartite songs.

Anette's departure seems abrupt, until you factor in that a veteran and highly respected singer like Floor is immediately filling in for the rest of the tour. Makes me think this was planned for awhile, and Anette getting sick created the opportunity.
Floor is an outstanding singer, and it would be something else if she became a fulltime member or at least recorded something with them, but Tuomas' control-freak ego would clash with Floor. He'll probably go with some young newbie with a ton of skill as a permanent replacement.

No, this happened because Nightwish doesn't know how to settle personal differences. Anette publicly blogged her disapproval when Nightwish did a show without her because she was sick, and Nightwish wasn't happy about that blog post so they fired her.

Don't know Tuomas so can't agree with metions about his ego, but Nightwish enterprise he created has spinned some coins as the mythical sampo or biggest business corporations of Finland on the band's most profitable money making years.
If the ego should be a case, how about searching some grander singvögel than those who couldn't keep on pace of the north-eastbound musician boys? Maybe the infantile heavy music could also be matured to some other directions and HEY, you would get to the high culture, lesser fans but even moar money > PROFIT

If I remeber right, Tuomas said he felt Tarja was thebest operatic singer in metal and they would never find someone as good. Frankly, I always felt that Floor and, in particular, Simone Simmons were better (or at least I prefer their vocals) than Tarja.
If Floor becomes the new permenant singer, I hope she's allowed to use the full range of her voice with them, when I sa ReVamp last year she had one of the most convincing death metal growls I've ever heard!, certainly put her band mate to shame at least.

I've heard that and don't doubt it, but for Floor Jansen, as opposed to some back-up singer, to hop on board immediately after Anette's departure gives me the impression that the band was looking to replace her anyways and that her blog post gave them the opportunity. Considering Anette compared herself to Rihanna at one point in that blog, it was inevitable that her and Tuomas would have an ego clash...and maybe he knew it by chatting up Floor for awhile beforehand.
Just a speculation of course.

I have tickets for Nightwish on Mexico City, on November, and I must admit now I'm really looking forward to seeing them with Floor. It is a plus I didn't expect... I just hope everything goes smoothley and they don't change vocalist again, or end up cancelling the rest of the tour. As for Imaginaerum, despite the fact that I didn't like Anette so much as a singer, it was perhaps the album I have liked the most from Nightwish (though I must admit I haven't heard all of them yet, I'm missing 2 or 4 albums so far). As a matter of fact, if I hadn't liked Imaginaerum so much, I don't think I would have bought my tickets, having seen them on the previous tour. Now, I really hope Floor will remain with the band as a permanent member... and it would even be great if the band started another tour with Floor before releasing a new album, so that they may work on a setlist that includes songs from all their discography.

And it would be great as well if they recorded and released an album from one of the live performances with Floor, it would be great to have the Imaginaerum songs with a better singer.

I don't know all the details, but I do know that Nightwish was at Prog Power USA, and all the other singers that either filled in for Anette the night that she was sick or took over were also at Prog Power USA.

Quite a shock I must say, but Jansen is very good and will fit right in no problem. Love her work with Ayreon. This is not a travesty in any way. I'm excited to hear the next album, which I know won't be for a while. Anyway IMMAGINARIUM was a great album and ill miss Olzen, but prepare to be FLOORed everyone. This chic came hit octave 8 in her sleep. It's gonna work. Not a big loss.

Shame, I really liked Olzon's voice. Jansen is a good replacement, but I'm not a huge fan of her style.

While i'm not a big fan of NIGHTWISH i love Floor's vocals. I've heard her on a few AYREON albums and i really like her tone.

I have a friend who shares your opinion, and I just don't get it. She sings through her nose - drives me nuts, and completely ruined the last two albums for me. Plus I just don't get why you would replace a 3 octave lyric soprano who had been classically trained with a nasally alto who sings like a rocker. It would be like replacing James Labrie with...some emo kid.

I'm sure there are a lot of people who think it would be a beneficial move for DT.
Anyway, I really haven't listened to Nightwish since the quite disappointing Once came out, but I did like Olzon's voice on a couple of radio hits I was force fed. Even if I don't care about what they're offering musically nowadays, the soap opera around the band is always worth my attention. I'm expecting we'll hear some more background on this a bit later.

I just think they're people who like decent singers.
But who cares you get all flustered whenever someone says anything bad about them eheh

She should have stayed with Alyson Avenue, their first two albums were really classy AOR :
However, unlike Nightwish, they found the perfect match to Anette to replace her :

People who like emo singers are people who like decent singers? I stand by my idiot statement - can't STAND emo! So whiny - it's like listening to my 3 and 4 year old, but with a band behind them!

Had nothing against Anette, saw them last year in Paris.
I came as a shock to me, very unexpected.
On the plus side : maybe they will go back to playing heavy metal ... A whole chunk of the concert was dedicated to Tuomas' newfound love for folk and ... I wondered if it was still a nightwish concert.

Kinda shocked, I saw Nightwish/Kamelot 2 weeks ago in Michigan. Very good show.
Yes, I would've preferred a singer with a bit more range than what Anette brought, but the two times I saw Nightwish (2007 & 2012) she had very good stage presence and did very well singing-wise.
Floor would make a great permanent replacement though, if she & the band wished. She can do the opera stuff that Tarja brought, and sound more 'pop' like what Anette brought, both styles.

Quite much talk about the issue here in Finland, and some of my friends are very interested of the band. Saw this recent clip of with Floor Jansen, and she certainly is a convincing entertainer, though I wouldn't personally be so interested of the music:
Is the mentione Ayreon quite similar in style? Have a great workweek you all.

^ yes. Floor Jansen style is very similar as to what she displayed with Ayreon. The album 10010000100 is a shining example of her range and sImplicit. I think she is a great fit. Don't see a problem with this move 👌

An official Nightwish video of Floor in action at the the premiere of the "Imaginaerum" film on November 10 at Hartwall Arena in Helsinki, Finland, where the audience was treated to both a full-scale Nightwish concert (their last concert in Finland this year) and the first-ever public screening of the movie. There are lots of unofficial audience-filmed clips of this show on YouTube, despite the use of cameras of any kind being 'banned' on the night - there's even a couple of uploads of the whole concert, but both audio and video quality is, not surprisingly, somewhat less than perfect. Here's hoping that whoever filmed this particular clip professionally also recorded the rest of the show, and that a proper DVD of it will follow sometime in the spring.
