Indeed. It was the most ridiculous decision in commercial aviation history.

If it had been an American project, it would still be flying. They said it was because of that one awful crash, that BA and AF decided to ground and mothball the whole fleet. This clearly wasn't the case. There was a time when 737's were falling our of the sky like dead birds, in comparison. They weren't grounded, because they were cash cows, and most used short haul jet, the world over.

i think it was partly becouse it costed a fortune and a litle bit more to drift it, and make it airborn, with fuel, repairing, and safety. also they made A LOT of noice.

If it had been an American project it never would have flown at all.... (because it didn't: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boeing_2707" rel="nofollow - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boeing_2707" rel="nofollow - Boeing 2707 )

At the time they were retired they were the oldest flying airframe in BA & AF's fleets - 27 years in service is a pretty good record.

No Photoshop in 1972 Wink Roger Dean grafted a real seagull skull onto a Airfix plastic model and tried to photograph it but could not achieve a natural looking depth of field, so he painted it.

I was once buzzed by a pair of those buggers (Tankbusters as we knew them in the 70s - I think Warthog was a later name) while riding my motor-cycle up a steep hill - they were terrain following at some stupidly low altitude up the other side and we sort of met at the brow of the hill - scary, but then me on a Yamaha will scare anyone, even USAAF pilots. Tongue

When they were testing these ugly things back in the 70's they would remove sections of the emanage and main wing section just to see if it could sustain ground fire damage. I was talking with an armour oficer once and he said that he '' wouldn't want to be in a tank with one of those ugly f**kers around''.

Many Spit pilots I have spoken with say that this is not really Spit because it was not powered by a RR Merlin. It had a more powerful Griffon. But it still kicked ass. One story I heard was that it was flown against a BAC Lighting and freaking won. The lightning couldn't out turn it! The Spit litterally flew circles around the lighting. In order to stay airborne and effective  the Lightning had to maintain a higher speed. The reason for this test was because the Lightings were being flown against piston engined fighters in the far east.

Found this on thge web. You will notice that this was a Griffon powered Spit.

The English Electric Lightning was an Interceptor designed to combat Soviet Bombers during the Cold War.  You don't dogfight at Mach 2.
