I’m a freelance translator and started working 23-24 years ago while I was still a student. Sometimes I can be more or less without any income for a month or two, and sometimes I’m too busy. Usually it evens out; the start of this year was quite bad with only a few small jobs – but thanks to Arnold Schwarzenegger the summer has been very good.

I worked fast food for a few months while in college.  It was a now defunct restaurant called D'Lites which pitched itself as a healthier alternative to Wendy's.  Wendy's started copying some of their menu items and drove them out of business.  My favorite memory from that was when a guy was working the griddle and gal was working the prep and she said "my buns are ready for your meat".  D'Lites did leave some quality restaurant buildings behind.  The one in Chamblee is now a good Tex-Mex restaurant.

My first job commenced '79 and lasted 16 years (Bank)
My 2nd job commenced '95 and lasted 5 years (Airline)
My 3rd job commenced 2000 and lasted 6 years (telecommunications)
My 4th job commenced 2007 and lasted 3 years (Government)
My 5th job commenced 2011 and lasted 18 months (Debt Collection)
My 6th and current  job commenced 2012 (Insurance)

Job security and so-called permanent employment can now be viewed as quaint anachronisms in my view

They have always been in my view, or at least since I got my first job. The HR guy (of Philips Electronics) tried to tell me that I would reach my peak in the company around my 45th year. I told him I was 23, and that he was a fool to think I would stick around for 22 years with a company that tried to pull an '1984' on me. I got the job, and left after 5 years (1995-2000). After that, I worked in ICT secondment for 5 years (2000-2005), an IT consultancy firm for 2 (2006-2008) and then I decided it was time to roll my own, so I've been an independent software architect, trainer and coach for just over 4 years now. No more bosses for me....

No one actually asked what your job is.  Just how long you've been at it!

I worked 11 years at a military research establishment with 1700 personnel - even the janitor and the ladies who made the tea in the staff canteen had security clearance. D'You wanna tell us how long you've been a CIA spy and just leave it at that?
