I think there will be an overwhelming number of votes for "I'm a man and I don't know lots of women who like prog".

In real life, i know a few prog fans. My dad, my uncle, and my mom. And I know quite a few of prog fans here, almost all of them being male. So I know very few women proggers compared to guy proggers.

I'm a man and voted for the middle option. I do know women who like prog, but it's not that many though.
Usually they'll listen to Porcupine Tree, Pure Reason Revolution and other stuff that roams the more melodic side of the fence.
Still, they're out there!
Nice to know that we have one more here at the site. Welcome Glucose!

Ah, thanks! btw I have to say I don't know lots of songs from Porcupine tree, neither the second band. VDGG, Yes and Genesis that's mine.. And when there are handsome men in the band, it's even better.

Will you marry me?
Just kidding....
But I do find that to be a wonderful thing though... All the girls I've ever played VDGG to - seemed scared or just plain hostile - and to think that I always start out with something melodic and smooth like My Room....

Well as long as you like them, then that hopefully should be enough. Nothing can ever take that away from you.
But yeah, sometimes it can get a little lonely not being able to share one's musical tastes with friends and family.

Poor we prog fans. Only few people from the world know the greatest genre of music! Poor majority people.

Given that prog acts were very popular and top-charting in the seventies, there must have been some women who bought their records back in those days. Or did only men contribute to these sales ?

That's quite interesting! I've known only 'the creation of birds' but I didn't know the author. Really interesting paintings, but maybe too dark. But i love art in general and try to make my own stuff as well. Maybe art was that what helped me to begin to love prog.

^I remember having in my teens a tape with DT's 'images and words' on one side and Death's 'individual thought patterns' on the other side. I was not yet seriously into prog at that time, but I remember having difficulties to listen to the Death album in its entirety, while I often listened with delight to the whole DT album. Also, before I copied the DT album to tape, I borrowed from the local library Van halen's 'Balance', and to be honest, I found DT to be stylistically in a similar genre to van Halen...It's only later that I learned they are tagged prog metal.

I took "I am a woman" Do I know any women who like prog. Not really but the same goes for the men. Most middle aged men I know are Blues or Country fans. Hence that is why we call the Blues here "middle aged white mans music" because it is them who listen primarily to it today.
As for the women they all seem to be either, Soul, Jazz, Hip Hop or Metal with their tastes here. Not much prog though

I once met a woman who claimed to have taught herself English by studying lyrics by Genesis (Gabriel era, of course). But she was Italian so maybe it doesn’t count? (Her English was excellent btw! Gabriel is obviously a good teacher.)
And I must mention my sister: When she was 13 she was fed up with being a child, so she started to smoke, drink coffee and listen to prog instead of ABBA. She has even written a book about it (I’ve never seen a novel with so many references to VdGG).

What does it mean "to like prog"? I know quite a number of girls who like rock music in general, and are huge fans of Pink Floyd. Or Radiohead. Or Sigur Ros. Does that count?
If not, then...well, let's say, five or six women who I met in my life are really into prog.

I know a couple of girls that are into Prog. One had studied classical piano since she was a child, and I'm proud to say that I got her into Prog many many years ago. How? By putting to her the song Island from Rennaissance. And that was it! She stuck! Of course he greatest passion is classic music, but she listens and collects records (Yes, the vinyl ones!) and cd's from many Prog bands. I also introduce Prog to the other girl, and although she liked it for sometime, she never really got deep into it.

Well I know a girl (she's like 13) who liked some basic prog without knowing it was prog, and I showed her some bands. Now she's not gone full prog yet, but at least she likes Van der Graaf Generator. She has a lot to learn, though, from her one and only master.
So, that's one person who likes prog and I know her. Everyone else either hasn't heard of prog ever ever or dismisses it (these are known as lesser people, but that's another topic).

I know a couple of girls that have some interesting, eclectic music tastes, well at mutual to our tastes. I've been friends with this girl for a while now, but we've never really discussed music or shared thoughts about music until I saw her iPod one day. Explosions In The Sky, Jethro Tull, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Miles Davis, Hella, Guided By Voices, The Smashing Pumpkins, Spiritualized and The Mars Volta were all some the bands that showed up and my jaw literally dropped. I was really surprised and just completely oblivious to the fact that we both shared these same musical interests the whole time. It was just really great to see.

I've known a few. I once dated a woman for 6 years, who loved prog in high school (Yes, Moody Blues, Genesis, King Crimson, etc.), but by the time I started dating her had said she'd "grown out of it" and was listening to stuff like Pearl Jam, Stone Temple Pilots, Live, Matchbox 20 and the like.
TBH though, I'm surprised whenever I meet anyone (gender unimportant) who is into prog, aside from the knuckleheads on this site.

You have to start from a position of height. Try the fifteenth floor window. That should get ya going.

I’ve heard that the trick is to fall without hitting the ground.

And if something goes wrong and you weren't able top use wings, simply catch your hair and pull yourself up for a smooth landing on the ground :)

It would be correct to say that my lady wife likes "prog" more than I do, because I don't call the music I like "prog" or anything like this. In fact, I find most of what is listed as "prog" not terribly stimulating.

It would be unnatural for me, I'm afraid. When I start talking about the weather I always do it in an ironic way.
This x1000.
On topic, I don't know anyone who likes prog except my dad. Then there are all the stoners that "love Pink Floyd" because they listen to Dark Side of the Moon when they smoke, some of whom are female, but I don't count them as liking prog.

Ah another of these!
As always: I know few people, regardless of gender, who like prog but I do know far more men than woman who do. In fact it's probably like a 10 to 1 ratio. Why? Dont know, not gunna try to figure it.

I am female. Prog is awesome. My mother is also female she taught me this fact.
When I was 13 she saw me raking through the Sabbath records and watching headbangers ball. She turned to me and said 'finally, you have come of age young padawan' and poured me a half pint of Miller, gave me the secret locations of all the Heavy Prog and said 'right then, who do you want to see first, Yes, Rush or Wishbone Ash?' I said, 'all of them'. Puberty could not have been a more enjoyable experience.
