Ok guys, what I'm about to say here may be a little controversial but after reading a few threads regarding this system, about the reviews quality and so on I began to wonder what's the purpose of the SRS (star rating system). In a perfect world this system should be a guide for us to tell how good or bad an album is, but  we ain't in a perfect world, so this system only reflects  the listener's personals taste.  Is popular always good?...don't you like classical music? it's ok...but would you make an objetive review about the quality of a classical composition?. How do you review a painting??...because you liked the colors and the shapes? that's not objective at all! It doensn't matter if we like or dislike something....If you are not an artist, a painter or an academic in art then you are not qualified to review paintings!. Same with music, period. I really doubt that at least 5% of all reviews are done by someone who really knows about music. How many people can actually say about their favorite band "this album is really crap!" Most will defend their band and any crap they make to death!

Under this point of view I think ths SRS should dissapear. I see no use to it. It oftens mislead people into thinking that a particular album is the best of the bunch when it really is the most popular or most listened to of them all...at least this happens with very popular bands.

The thing is, there are people here who write intelligent and insightful reviews. And the top of the heap are the Collaborators, those who write among the best reviews on the site (although I think mine are okay).

Of course a review is an opiniated thing, it wouldn't be a review if it wasn't. And reviews that are merely just a bash/praise towards an album or band without anything that really counts as a review are usually reported and deleted from the database.

Giving everyone a chance to review can cause some problems, but there usually enough diamonds in the rough to make it all worth it.

And if you're saying that only people who know about music should review, then you are seriously misguided.

But I don't want to argue.

Hehe , I meant that in order to have impartial reviews. Of course anyone can review whatever they want! But I wouldn't even think about reviewing a piece of Haiku (a kind of traditional japanese poetry) cos' I don't know nothing about haiku! lol. We've got a saying here in Chile that says something like "Shoemaker to your shoes". It means that we should stick to what we know.

I only want to see helpful reviews here...not only crap like This is my favorite band and this new released album is kickasss because...hmm...well...just because they kickass!...got what I mean?

Regards

I agree 100% with you, in that I believe that only helpful reviews should be submitted. You are lucky you didn't register about a month ago when the new Dream Theater album came out. There were more rubbish reviews than helpful (I believe I wrote a helpful one), and most of them were either "This album/band sucks" or "This band rules!". But there will always be rubbish reviews to go aside with the helpful ones.
