I never thought he was such a great singer, but I did think it was cool how he was drumming the way he does AND singing at the same time. They didn't bother me until the Systematic Chaos/Black Clouds & Silver Linings albums when they became more up front in the mix, especially in BC&SL. Before that, they were merely backround vocals, mixed with Petrucci's vocals too. Hahahahah- You're lucky if your parents even like music at all. They hate everything that I like. I spend 1 minute tryin to show them my music and I get told "I'm not going to listen to it if its not something that I like, but we support you 100%." I even sold them 2 of my albums and then stole those same albums right back that night and neither of them mentioned it to me. They totally forgot and did not care. I tried to show them something else I wrote, which was classical music, and they asked me why everything I do is evil, and told me that my singer is an evil terrible person.
Also, most people hate the music that I love. People don't seem to be too fond of prog in Columbus, Ohio. I'm used to it to the point where I get enjoyment out of the amount of people I can get to leave a bar if they have one of those jukeboxes that connects to the internet.
A bartender once got pissed off at me for picking a bunch of songs in a row by Death and Atheist because he said I was "ruining his business" People were leaving and I told him it's not my fault they have terrible taste in music. He looked at me and said "This music sucks. Disturbed and Godsmack already made music like this." He couldn't tell I was playing albums from the early 90's.
What I'm saying is taht I'm used to everyone hating the music that I love. So it is pointless to make a thread like this on here because all you people have more in common with me musically than most even if you only listen to Neo-Prog. Ha

They don't really bother me, but I realize that they're quite terrible, as far as harsh vocals go. I prefer to think of them as very manly rap vocals, instead of harsh vocals. He also seems to throw them in just to show his "metal" voice off when they don't actually fit in the song. They're kind of funny, actually. Check out my reviews on Vangelis. He is my absolute favorite, but most of the Prog community does not share the same degree of appreciation. His body of work is quite diverse. If you have seen Blade Runner, Chariots of Fire, 1492 Conquest of Paradise, or Alexander, then you have heard his music.
I just listed some other bands & artists I really like, but most of those I added are not that controversial. I love Hackett, Rutherford, Brand X and Phillips but I hate Genesis. Where am I wrong? Is it because I'm indifferent to Gabriel and I hate Collins? Queen's Hot Space. It's far not that awful as everyone loves to describe it. The only really weak point in this album is its production which is really poor for Queen's standards. But the songs themselves are mostly very good and interesting, and much better than stuff from their following The Works and A Kind of Magic (which, with good overall production, are very boring).

Out of my top four favorite bands/ artists, probably only one - Mike Oldfield - is well-received on this site. The others are Faust, Slapp Happy, and Deerhoof. I absolutely love Kansas, Van der Graaf Generator, Focus, Big Big Train, Pink Floyd, and Godspeed You! Black Emperor. I'm not really fond of Porcupine Tree. I also can't make myself like most neo-prog, try as I might. Back in the early 90's, when I first started delving deep into prog, almost no one I knew liked my Yes, Genesis, ELP, King Crimson, and Gentle Giant albums. I could only listen to them alone, in my car. My roommates couldn't stand most of it, my friends didn't want to hear it. What I've realized over the years is that prog as a whole is a niche genre. It has a lot of fans, but it has even more people who don't like it, or don't know what it is but wouldn't like it if they heard it. We are the fringe, though I think it's easy to forget when you spend all your time talking to people who listen to (somewhat) similar music to oneself. So I try my best to keep an open mind. I've pretty much stopped using words like "hate" and 'sucks" and "crap" when it comes to music, instead using "doesn't appeal to me" or "does nothing for me" (or when I REALLY don't like something I use "bores me to tears"). Because it's pretty much guaranteed that something I dislike, someone else will consider the greatest music ever created. And vice versa. |

I guess I don't hate all atheists, just the arrogant, obnoxious ones that think they know everything. The ones that preach as much as zealots and think they're simply better human beings than those 'ignorant', 'pathetic', 'stupid' religious freaks. I don't believe in any of it on either side. I like questions more than answers. I'm certainly no theist, but calling myself an atheist hurts my heart. Passion and Warfare gets me every time. I love the guy's playfulness and how fluidly it blends with his seriousness. I'll have to listen to the Fire Garden suite, soon, though.
