Nice choices. I see we have a few mutual favorites :). never heard of Lacrimosa though, I'll have to check em out.   I listened to Digital Ghosts for the  1st time today actually, Huge fan of SG btw. can't decide wheat my favorite by them is. Legacy is one only album by them that i've yet to hear. I need to give that one a liste, I've heard from a lot of people that it's a great album.

Hmm...I'm going to try not to repeat a band too many times:
1. Dream Theater - Metropolis Pt. 2 Scenes From a Memory
2. Seventh Wonder - The Great Escape
3. Symphony X - The Odyssey
4. Seventh Wonder - Mercy Falls
5. Dream Theater - Images and Words
6. Fates Warning - A Pleasant Shade of Grey
7. Circus Maximus - Isolate
8. Redemption - Snofall on Judgement Day
9. Epica - The Divine Wings of Tragedy
10. Riverside - Out of Myself

There's so many more I want to include, and I was tempted to try not to repeat a band more than once for the list....

I lost a LOT of respect for Pain of Salvation with Scarsick, Road Salt, and Road Salt 2.  Perhaps I should have included them in the list but I've lost so much interest in them.

I forgot to add Russian Circles in my list. I enjoy them more than Periphery, so maybe I'd swap them for the number 10 spot. Great to see Isis on your list as well. Fantastic Atmospheric, Sludgy Metal. Thumbs Up

Yes. They have that heavy sludge feeling to them with a great pysch flavor due to their richard wright on keys.

That sounds phenomenal! Are they Floyd influenced? I've just been recently listening to a lot of Isis, Neurosis, Pelican, Battles, so these guys should be right up that alley.
I'll check them out tonight. I'll let you know what I think once I hear some songs. Thumbs Up

Yes, I had put a Symphony X album in my list and so I typo-ed when I got to Epica.

It's hard to pick a top ten. I just went with my first instinct but had all kinds of albums I wanted to fit in after.

I'm not what I'd consider a metalhead, neither have yet to have enough exposition to the extreme and progressive metal genre, unfortunately, though I am very much into metal this last year.

A few names come up though:

Kayo Dot- Coyote
Deathspell Omega- Fas Ite... , Kenose
Dodheimsgard- Supervillain Outcast
Virus- Carheart
Myster Mobius s/t
Negura Bunget- Om
Sleepytime Gorilla Museum- Of Natural History, In Glorious Times
Unexpect- In A Flesh Aquarium

Coyote? Love that album but not remotely metal, closer to chamber rock or jazz than anything.

To say it pretentiously, it's not metal in the traditional sense, but it's unnerving in a way that reminds me of metal, so I count it as metal.

In no particular order:
Dream Theater - Awake
Dream Theater - Scenes From A Memory
Dream Theater - Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence
Dream Theater - Black Clouds & Silver Linings
Dream Theater - A Dramatic Turn of Events
Symphony X - V: The New Mythology Suite
Riverside - Second Life Syndrome
Riverside - Anno Domini High Definition
Opeth - Ghost Reveries
Devin Townsend - Ziltoid The Omniscient
Planet X - Moonbabies

A couple albums I love but don't necessarily go with the theme of this thread:
Opeth - Heritage (It's not metal, but one of the best non-metal albums by a prog-metal band)
Derek Sherinian - Oceana (Mostly jazz-fusion, with a couple metal riffs; Derek's albums are usually prog-metal)

How hard is this! I wrote down my list of 10...then looked at what other people had put...then ripped up my list and started over! Dream Theater - 6 Degrees
Nightwish - Dark Passion Play
Symphony X - Divine Wings of Tragedy
Riverside - Second Life Syndrome
Ayreon - 01011001
Symphony X - Paradise Lost
Dream Theater - Change of Seasons
Iron Maiden - Seventh Son
Pain of Salvation - Perfect Element
Epica - Design Your Own Universe

Niceto see Planet X - Moonbabies get a mention :)

Ten favorites from someone who doesn't really like the genre in question, but was once a teenage metaller. I don't mind my metal to somehow  progress, challenge and stretch the limits of its genre, but prog-metal has very little or no appeal to me.

Kayo Dot: Choirs of the Eye
Vektor: Black Future
Voivod: Dimension Hatröss
Enslaved: Isa
Burzum; Filosofem
Opeth: Blackwater Park
Trollmann Av Ildtoppberg: Dark Clouds Blacken the Sky on the Eve of the Thousandth Sacrifice
Death: Leprosy
Metallica: ...And Justice For All
Mastodon: Leviathan

Does Guapo qualify? If so Five Suns in, Leviathan out.

Strictly from the Prog-Metal database here:

Hall of the Mountain King - Savatage
Streets - Savatage
Perfect Element - Pain of Salvation
Remedy Lane - Pain of Salvation
Human Equation - Ayreon
The Dream Sequencer - Ayreon
Promised Land - Queensryche
Operation: Mindcrime - Queensryche
Second Life Syndrome - Riverside

Tenth spot is difficult for me to fill at this time. I'd probably say something else by Pain of Salvation (BE), Ayreon (Into the Electric Castle), Savatage (Gutter Ballet), or Queensryche (Empire). I'm not too into progressive metal anymore.

that's probably the reason I prefer it. But personally I consider Leprosy progressive, although not prog.

My list wont be very diverse but I will have a go:

BE-Pain of Salvation
Remedy Lane-Pain of Salvation
The Perfect Element Pt 1-Pain of Salvation
Anno Domini High Definition-Riverside
Ghost Reveries-Opeth
Second Life Syndrome-Riverside
Black Water Park-Opeth
Metropolis Pt2-Dream Theater
One Hour By The Concrete Lake-Pain of Salvation
Aquarius-Haken ( I know it's labeled heavy prog but is hear it more as prog metal)

I wanted to put Opeth's Heritage and Riverside's Memories In My Head on the list but neither are prog metal.

Just give it all an hour by the concrete lake.

I'd have to think about it awhile to come up with my absolute top 10.

1. Symphony X - The Odyssey
2. Dream Theater - Images And Words

after that it gets foggy, I'd have to put Opeth's Ghost Reveries & Blackwater Park in there, Seventh Wonder's The Great Escape......I don't really think of Porcupine Tree as metal, or they'd get several on the list as well.
