Thought this might be interesting.
Have you seen your favorite prog artist/group live in concert? If so, where and when, and how many times?
Some of us have been lucky in this respect, and some not.

My favorite prog artist is Triumvirat, and i have never seen them live, because i did not discover them until 1985, five years after they split, and stopped recording.
Around 2002, i was all geared up to see and hear new things from them, as they were slated to release a new album, "The Web-Site Story" , with an accompanying tour, but these plans never materialised, even though the album was recorded.Confused

Yes I have. Approve <--- *smug grin*

Pink Floyd - first time in 1972 at the Wembley Empire Pool - many times since, including The Wall.

Peter Gabriel - first solo tour and every tour after that through the 70s and 80s and recently at Womad.

The Enid - many times in the late 70s and just recently in a town near where I live.

Tangerine Dream - just the once on the tour that resulted in the best electronic live album ever Ricochet.

/edit...never seen, but want to as they also number as "my favourites":

Opeth, Pain Of Salvation and The Dear Hunter.

Never thought it would happen, but I got to see Magma in 1999, at Prog Fest.  I never would have dreamed that Vander would revive the band, but he did, and not only was it just as good as it used to be, he kept it going and it still thrives to this day.

Really nice thread (Clap), and I'm pleased to say the answer is yes.

Marillion are my favourite band, and I have seen them many times now, starting off at The Marquee just as Market Square Heroes was released. I'm off again to see them in Cardiff this September, this time with my son in tow for his first ever gigApprove

I've seen Gabriel & Genesis about six times each, plus Gabriel together with Genesis at Milton Keynes Bowl for Six Of The Best, which was one hell of an experience, not least of all for being the wettest I've been in my life.

Tull many a time, plus Yes, who were always magical to me.

Many more I could bore people with, but, to close, my only real regret is that I never saw either Supertramp or King Crimson live. For the latter, I wanted to see them in London in 2000, but couldn't, as I had to take exams for my Inspector course at work the following day in London. Bloody government!LOL

EDIT: Forgot The Wall at Earls Court - superb!

It's a tricky question because my choices for favourite bands are modeled by the live experiences I've had.

My list: Magma (3 times), Tortoise (1), GY!BE (1), Jaga Jazzist (2), The Mars Volta (1; rubbish sound, not a great experience over-all), Kayo Dot (1; another unsuccessful experience, two band members were prevented from entering the UK, it ended with Toby playing Tartar Lamb stuff), byron (6 times at least) and PT (1; only band in this list that I like more in studio than on stage). Would like to see: The Flaming Lips, Mew, Explosions In The Sky, Sigur Ros, Motorpsycho and others. Will be seeing Radiohead in October.

Too late for Pink Floyd, King Crimson, Genesis and such bands.

Tell you what, Alex, if Byron ever came over to these parts, I would drop everything to see him. Listened again to those albums I reviewed the other night, and still find them incredible.

The answer is yes and no I'm afraid.  I have seen Genesis 3 times but never with PG or Hackett for that matter.  I have never seen Gong but I have seen Daevid Allen with The Here and Now Band.  I have seen Marillion twice, both with Fish in 1982.  And I saw The Wall at Earls Court first time around.

However, I haven't seen Tangerine Dream or any Krautrock.

I have seen Talk Talk though Big smile

I've seen most of my favourite prog bands...................but............unfortunately I was still at school when the whole movement was in its pomp, and only got to see the later incarnations,  so missed Dark Side of the Moon , Close To The Edge, Selling England, Songs From The Wood tours...and the list goes on ...grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Some of my other fave prog artists i have not seen, either

Passport
Colosseum
Wallenstein
Dirk Steffens
Dzyan
Brainstorm

not surprising, really, as like with Triumvirat, i did not discover them until way past their hay day, and my tastes go mainly for groups that are European, and a little off the beaten track, and i have lived my entire life in Ontario, Canada (though have visited Quebec and the US)
Judging from a lot of the posts here, you guys have been really lucky! No doubt some memories to cherishThumbs Up

Other favorites for me, other than Magma:

Can - No, never, not even close.
Genesis - Invisible Touch tour (in a football stadium - I needn't have bothered. I like that album but stadium shows suck)
Yes - No
Porcupine Tree - Yes, in 1999 at the same Prog Fest where I saw Magma.  I wasn't really a big PT fan yet, though I had "Sky" and "Signify".
Thinking Plague - Yes, at Prog Day in... '98 I think?  Also got to meet the band.
Moody Blues - twice in the 90s
Earth and Fire - Uh, no.  But what I wouldn't give.....
Hawkwind - yes and no... I saw "Nik Turner's Hawkwind", one of the various touring versions of the group, but not the "real" one.
the Residents - "Demons Dance Alone" tour.  Very cool.
Rush - just once, on the "Roll the Bones" tour.  I'm planning to see them on this tour too.
Secret Oyster - No Angry

Many dreams came true:
Pink Floyd (1989 tour), Roger Waters (2 times), Jethro Tull (several times), Omega, Kormoran, Manzarek - Krieger, Yes, Rick Wakeman, Uriah Heep, Arsenal, Keith Emerson (featuring Marc Bonilla), Santana, Asia (don't laugh please, it was a great gig in 1990), Pesnyary (unfortunately only their 30th anniversary concert, it was impossible to get tickets in the 70s), Avtograf, Dialog.

Being pretty new to the whole "prog scene", I haven't seen too many.

Tool, Boise, ID in 2007.  Mostly 10,000 Days material with some of the classics thrown in.  Sadly, no Third Eye.
Porcupine Tree, Los Angeles, CA in 2009 for The Incident tour.  Great, great show.
Rush (twice), Irvine, CA in 2010 during the Time Machine Tour and again with a friend new to Rush in San Diego last June.

Also, does a Pink Floyd tribute band count?  If so, I saw a fantastic, note for note, performance of Animals in it's entirety along with some other PF hits last March.  Fun show, although the wife was quite bored. LOL

Yes, Genesis and ELP, but all in the 80s so none of those concerts were as good as they could have been.

Zappa retired from touring before I started going to shows.  I did see his son though, before I retired from going to shows.

Also seen Rush (3 times, I think), the Jethros, the Moodies, Neurosis (opening for Pantera!), Kansas, Floyd (post-Waters), Primus, Tool (with Meshuggah opening) and that's all I can think of.  (Do TSO count?)

Yes siree!

Peter Gabriel twice in 2002, Québec city. First in rehearsals (the first 1000 ticket holders to show up at the arena would be allowed entry) then the proper gig a couple of months later.

Funny thing is that Québec city wasn't even considered by the Gabriel crew for the Up tour, but they needed a place to rehearse so it was like : If you could add Québec city to your itinary then the arena is all yours. And a true gift to the fans it was.

Yes! I will leave this world with a smile on my face.

My favorite prog artist has changed over the years of those that are waaaay up there.

Pink Floyd - '82 (i think)
King Crimson - 3 times

The absolute highlight has to be Univers Zero who I never thought I'd get to see. I got to see them play Washington DC at Sonic Circuit having driven from Cincinnati for that one night of music (Miriodor as support were also fantastic) I was in heaven that evening.

I flew to France last year for RIO to specifically see Univers Zero-Present-Aranis as One Night In Belgium, midblowingly good.

This year I'm going back to France to get to see Magma for the first time.

Shining live is an hour of non-stop sonic assault on your eardrums. It will leave you feeling as if you've been attacked in a dark alley at night and beaten to within an inch of your life. Awesome live band Big smile

I'm "only" 35 years old, so I'm too young to have witnessed the great ones, at least in their primes, and Frank Zappa passed away before I had discovered him. I'm still quite happy with who I've managed to see live though:

Pink Floyd - Division Bell tour. My first proper concert when I was 17 years old.
Jethro Tull - twice
King Crimson - Power to Believe tour
Focus
Edgar Broughton Band
Opeth - twice, seeing them again this summer
Cynic
Anekdoten - Walked past my local record shop a few years ago with no intention of going inside. Glanced at the window while passing by and noticed a poster. "Holy jeebus, Anekdoten is playing tonight!!" Bought the ticket right on the spot...
Gong with Steve Hillage Band supporting
Porcupine Tree - Incident Tour. I'm not thrilled about their output from In Absentia onwards, so on the one hand I was happy to have finally gotten to see them but at the same time disappointed that they only played 3 pre-In Absentia songs.
Rush - last year in Dublin
Tool
Mastodon - seeing them again this summer
Meshuggah
Enslaved - half a dozen times or so, they're from my home town.

I've also seen Muse which I didn't really like (way too pretentious for my tastes).

Seeing Steven Wilson, Grace for Drowning tour, tomorrow and Marillion later this summer. I would really like to see Mars Volta as well.

I started listening to prog too late to get even the last concerts from most of my favourite bands. Hope some of them still tour again. I love Pink Floyd, but have only managed to see Roger Waters (3 times, includin The Wall and Dark Side of the Moon, fantastic concerts). I also love Yes, but only managed to see them with Benoit David... hope at least I get to see them with John Davison too... as long as they come to Mexico. However, I managed to see Rick Wakeman playing 6 Wives at Hampton Court Palace, with orchestra and all... really one of my most treasured concerts... love his music, love that album, loved the performance. I also have come to love Dream Theater, and have seen them twice already. I have come to love Genesis, King Crimson, Jethro Tull, etc (the big names, of course), but not in time to see them... though some of them may still tour again.

Of my top three bands i've seen RUSH twice, PORCUPINE TREE four times and ANEKDOTEN not once. I hope to remedy the latter as they're supposed to play at Farfest in October and i do have tickets.
Most of the concerts i went to in my late teens and early twenties(late seventies to early eighties) were bands who aren't on here like AC/DC, IRON MAIDEN(oops they're here), VAN HALEN, AEROSMITH(late seventies) ,PINK FLOYD, DEF LEPPARD, QUEENSRYCHE, okay a few are on here.
When i saw Steven Wilson's solo tour last year it reminded me that i really haven't seen any band that used a lot of horns. Watching Theo travis was cool and i wished i could have seen bands like NUCLEUS, SOFT MACHINE, Miles and so on. Zappa would have been awesome too.

Emerson Lake and Powell I presume.

You're right.  Honestly I was bored after about 20 minutes or so...

I caught Shakti when they toured different locations in the country earlier this year.  It was an out of the world concert.  Most of my favourite PROG artists are from the 70s and they either don't play live anymore or even if they do, are not likely to come this side.   I love Radiohead to pieces but don't think it is very likely they will ever come to India.

Of the bands I like the most the only one I never saw is Kansas. Many of the others were not in their prime anymore (born in 66) but I'm glad I saw them anyway. The epoch when I attendent most concerts was the late 80's and the 90's.

Good job you weren't picking your nose the whole way up or it could have been fatal LOL

I too was at the original Wall series of concerts at Earls Court. I went on the Monday night (4th August).

I remember being distinctly underwhelmed by the whole thing to be honest but it's something to tell the grand-children at least Wink

I've been fortunate enough to have seen all my favorites, except Nektar, KC and Steve Hackett, live at least once and in many cases multiple times. A breakdown:

Yes-every tour from Relayer through Tormato and then again when they did "The Longs" and 35th Anniversary.
Jethro Tull-too many times to count. Used to see them in Rochester NY while in college and then see the same tour again when I got home to NYC.  Also, saw Ian Anderson solo.
Genesis-6 or 7 time from And then There Where Three through Invisible Touch
Gentle Giant-1977 and again on their final tour.
Peter Gabriel 3 or 4 times
ELP on the Works tour and when they toured with Tull  some years later.
Rush many times from A Farewell to Kings through Snakes and Arrows
Dixie Dregs-twice
Pink Floyd-The Wall at Nassau coliseum-stood outside the arena for 8 hours and got tickets 5 minutes before the show started, again on the Momentary Lapse tour.
David Gilmour solo after About Face was released.
Talking Heads twice.
Tool on the 10,000 Days tour.

Just love live shows. Hope to see some more before I go!

As a matter of fact, I have. Saw Kayo Dot at a decently sized pub venue February last year, they played the Caloniction Girl, Whisper Ineffable and Abysse Hinge II: The Shrinking Armeture from Coyote, then The Antique and a mind blowing performance of __On Limpid Form, vastly superior to the terrible CD version. Brilliant gig though saddly no Mia.

I've also seeb Pain of Salvation three times (headlining Summers End 07 on the Scarsick tour, very good performance, once supporting Opeth last October, not bad but 40 minutes was too short, and in February this year, absolutly brilliant, The Perfect Element alone was worth the price of admission).

Of the other bands I particularly like, Ive seen Opeth (3 times), White Willow, Marillion (twice), To-Mera (3 times, but only once with good sound, saddly that seems to be a problem for them) Caravan, Pendragon (4 or 5 times now) and IQ (3 times).

Good thread for great reminiscing...

Saw Kansas in 1977 at the LA Forum (now Staples Arena does shows...) - and again in 1978...
Saw Yes in September 1977 at the Forum (BEST show I have ever seen...such great memories...)
Saw Camel in 1978 in San Diego (they were in great form...)
Saw Tull in 1979 at Long Beach (CA) Arena, with UK (Bozzio had replaced Bruford by then...)
Saw Peter Gabriel at the Greek Theatre (CA) in 1982 (another fantastic show...)

Got married in 1985, and our work took us to Southeast Asia for 20 years in 1990.  Never had much extra money (or time to go to Hong Kong, Singapore, Bangkok, etc.) to take in any other prog bands that would make the Asian circuit.  Been back in the US (Seattle area) for less than a year, and still have not had time or money for shows.  Anyway, the ones I mentioned above will always have a special place in my heart - and memories...

I'll see Wishbone Ash on Friday at a bar in the Chicago area, will probably get to meet Andy Powell & band.  First saw 'em when they toured with Flash in 1973.

I've seen King Crimson on the LTIA tour, and then Discipline & 3 of a Perfect Pair, THRAK tours.  Also League of Gentlemen & various Fripp appearances at record stores & stuff.  Used to meet and chat with Fripp backstage, nice.   Very clever fellow, with a sense of humor that will kill you if you don't watch it.

Yes?  CTTE in 1972, missed Tales 'cause they cancelled our show at college (grrr!), Relayer twice, GFTO once, Reunion tour, 35th Anniversary.  They come to Chicago in a few weeks, I don't think I'll go for the price they are asking ($85 is cheapest price).

ELP?  BSS twice.  Amazing show.  Greg Lake brings his solo act within a few miles of my house in a few weeks, I'm weighing that one.

Not many I've missed, save Pink Floyd.  Living in a major metropolitan area has its few perks.

Let's see.

Queen - no Cry
Pink Floyd - no, but I saw Gilmour & Wright in 2006, and was quite pleased Clap
Porcupine Tree - twice, on their Portuguese tours Cool
Rush - once, last year in London. Best concert ever. Star
Genesis - no, but I saw The Musical Box a couple of years back. Sounded good to me. Thumbs Up
Steve Hackett - twice in 2010, an acoustic and an electric set.

Then, thanks to GAR, I've got to see some other favorites (as well as some non-favorites that I came to apreciate):
Ange
Van Der Graaf Generator
Caravan
PFM
Focus
Three Friends (Gentle Giant)
The Enid

Not bad for someone born in '83 in a peripheral country, I'd say.

I just took the folder where I keep my tickets and here's what I have prog or somehow prog-related. I have omitted a few Spanish bands which will not be known here and there are a few New Age artists, the late 80's and 90's were my most prolific years in terms of going to concerts and I consider them prog-related if not prog per se even if they are not in PA.

I never never never ever ever Repeat never never ever ever seen Céline monkeyface. But I have seen some of my favourite bands that appear here on PA. Don't ask me the dates

Rush 5 or 6 times

Crimson 6 times ( one was a two show night in '84 on the TOAPP tour that was made into the CD Absent Lovers much later )

Pink Floyd Pulse in Edmonton Canada in Commonwealth Stadium

Genesis in 2007 in the Big O in Montréal audio and video ( from  the screen ) were not synced so it pretty much sucked. Got in free with a friend who had tickets he won which is the only reason I went .

Marillion. Once at the spectrum in Montréal. Part of that show appears on Real to Reel

Larry Coryell 3 times. Once time we were pretty sure he was wired on coke because when he talked to the audience he could have been talking in Klingon for all I could understand. Playing was beyond excellent ( he was opening for Jean Luc Ponty at Théatre St. Denis and later joined Jean Luc Ponty for the encore which was Egocentric Molecules.

John McLaughlin at the Montréal International Jazz Festival. He mostly played stuff from the Mahavishnu.album ( the black one from the early 80s ) That synth axe he played for most of the show annoyed just about everyone in the audience including yours truly. When he picked up a black Gibson Les Paul everyone cheered!

Grobschnit in 1978 in a German town whos name I can't recall. I was 16 at the time and really had no clue who the freak they were. I was on high school trip and the older brother of the student I was billeted with snuck us in. Solar Music was the second half of the show which must have lasted about 3 hours.

Jean Luc Ponty twice. Once in Jarry Park in Montréal opening for Supertram and the other Theatre St Denis ( with Coryell opening as mentioned above)

Supertramp  Once with JL Ponty as mentioned above

Black Sabbath with Ian Gillan on vocals ( encore was Smoke On The Water )

Jethro Tull 3 times in the old Montréal Forum. Can't remember the tours because they always played a bit of everything

Peter Gabriel Security tour Place Des Nations Montréal '82 ??? His head was shaved and he made his way on to stage through the audience.

Almost saw Yes but the show had to be cancelled because of poor ticket sales.

There's a few more I'm sure But I've never ever ever seen Céline muttface.

My favorite band is Yes, and I saw them twice.

The first time was the tour after the release of Open Your Eyes, and it was a horrible concert. The magic was completely gone.
The second time was the tour after Magnification, with a Polish orchestra, and it was absolutely brilliant

Hi,

Goog dawd ... now you have to get my memory jog'd. Updated so that it goes more towards the progressive side of things. Only took out a handfull of things.

And I do not go see "favorites" ... at all. I saw most of these because they were worth the seeing, and it was important music for me!

Starting in Madison in 1968 ...
The Blues Magoos
The Who (yes, they did blow it all up then!)
Credence Clearwater Revival
-- was planning to see Otis Redding at DJ's and that was the night he died when the plane dived into the lake!
Steve Miller Band
Paul Butterfield Blues Band
Ides of March
several others on a really big concert near Green Bay with over 150k folks (it was the rave then!)
Andres Segovia - Madison
...
onto California in 1971:

Pink Floyd - Hollywood Bowl 1972 (still one of my favorite concerts ever!)
Moody Blues
Yes - Long Beach Arena (Tales from Topographic Oceans)
Pink Floyd - Sports Arena 1974
Nektar - Santa Monica Civic 1974 or 5
Tangerine Dream - Greek Theater (pictures on the live album of the trees on fire -- that's Lazerium btw!)
Tangerine Dream - Santa Monica Civic (1st tour -- and it had Lazerium with them!)
Hawkwind - Santa Monica Civic - Space Ritual Tour
Hawkwind and Man - Space 1999 tour in downtown LA dive somewhere
Babe Ruth/Iggy and the Stooges -- in which Janita Haan made Iggy look like an idiot!
Pink Floyd - Sports Arena  (The Wall)
Pink Floyd  - Anaheim Stadium (Famous show where Roger had fun with a couple of fans!)
Pink Floyd - Special Premiere of the Film in SF - Quadraphonic sound et al!
Renaissance - UCSB Campbell Hall
PDQ Bach -- now, that is a real concert and not a gip! Fun and enjoyable! And too progressive for this board! Possibly too funny for this board! And he makes Keith look stupid. PDQ also plays with his feet on the piano! Keith never did that!
Peter Gabriel - Arlington Theater - Santa Barbara
Divided Alien - The Wolf - Santa Barbara (Daevid Allen by himself with machines and poetry)
Roxy Music - Hollywood Palladium
Rare Earth/Black Sabbath - Hollywood Palladium
Fleetwood Mac - Hollywood Palladium (Bob Welch version)

Portland/Seattle
Stevie Ray Vaughn with Double Trouble and Robert Cray
Alan Stivell solo with another accoustic guitar player - Arlene Schnitzler Hall PDX
Tangerine Dream - Arlene Schnitzler Hall
Dream Theater with Queensryche and Fates Warning - Arlene Schnitzler Hall
Ozric Tentacles - La Luna PDX
Damo Suzuki
Gong 1995 - Took the picture they used on their posters for the rest of the year
Gong 1996 -
University of Errors
SF Progressive Music Festival 1999 - Lana Lane and the Rocket Scientists, Bondage Fruit/Buckethead/Brand X/Per Lindh Project/Porcupine Tree/Magma ... LL and the Rocket Scientists still was the most impressive of all these bands, other than Magma. Famous "incident" with Porcupine Tree. Roadie gets thrown off the gounds!
Zappa Plays Zappa - Return to Forever with Ponty, Clarke and Corea
Todd Rundgren

I'm not complaining ... I've seen my share and been lucky a few times.

On my wish list?
An evening or dinner with Peter Hammill. Don't even need to see him in concert.
Mike Oldfield - will likely never play America
Vangelis - no chance to ever play in America
Klaus Schulze - no change he will ever be in America
Ryuichi Sakamoto - I think he is done touring ... and getting a bit old for it.
Egberto Gismonti - not famous enough to come furhter north than San Francisco
Terje Rypdal - Sadly, he will never come to America. Would love to see him do an evening with David Darling ...
Manuel Gottsching - had his LA evening ripped off by the UCLA folks. Sadly, he didn't even get a chance to do his own thing anywhere else. Like no one gave a damn and he wasn't black enough or rap enough.
Kate Bush - She doesn't tour, and doesn't need to.
Mani Neumeier/Guru Guru or a version of.

Not interested in most concerts these days ... too much stuff is just too metronomic for my tastes.

I think I'm done with concerts.

I don't think that's necessary.

What it does show you is that it is difficult to see a lot of things if you are not in the big city, and California, NY, Paris and London are the 4 sites that get all th emusic, where these artists can have a show that some folks will show up.

Or you can get Ozric Tentacles in Portland, playing with the rRadio Shack sound equipment special that was bought for $3.99 and the Cracker Jack box, and hope that you are seeing the band you have heard before ... NOT!!!! Twice, too! I would suggest that 80% of these bands will die a quicker death on places with that kind of sound equipment!

^Yeah, i had really meant it to refer to  your favorite prog artist, or small group of artists at the very top

I see this thread has evolved into something a bit more.

I don't want to see it closed, but can people in the future please refer to their very favorite prog acts only?

Going beyond that is interesting, yes, but may be suitable for another thread.Smile

Iván, you are quite remarkable!  And I salute all of us who have made financial sacrifices, waited in long lines, or endured other indignities over the years!

To answer the OP question "Have you seen your favorite prog artist live?" I'd have to say yes (my own being "Yes"), but it's been a long, strange ride also.

Biggest regret?  Missing Gabriel with Genesis.  I don't know how often they toured in the old days, but I saw Genesis on "And Then There Were Three" which was quite sublime, and Peter Gabriel twice.  He was amazing in his prime.

Biggest thrill?  Seeing Bob Fripp perform solo with his Frippertronics on his "Drive to 1981" tour of record stores.....at the small store where I saw him perform, he went in the back to wash his hands, and the entire audience of perhaps 50 people left (except for me!)

Fripp came walking out with his right hand extended and a huge grin on his face, asking "Did you like it?"  Fripp...wanting to shake MY hand!!

These are moments we live for, so please enjoy them to the max.  Your lists are breathtaking, keep it up!  I enjoy knowing how some of you came to see your favorite artists in your own lands.  Chicago is like a pot of honey to bees in the concert business, although I've done well in other cities as well (Moody Blues, Al Dimeola, Adrian Belew, and Chick Corea played in Tulsa, Oklahoma in the mid 1980's).

I see this thread has evolved into something a bit more.

I don't want to see it closed, but can people in the future please refer to their very favorite prog acts only?

Going beyond that is interesting, yes, but may be suitable for another thread.Smile

Sorry ... I have no "favorite prog acts" ... and my fun with the ladies is not up to discussion here! Tongue  Wink

OK I was one of the guilty ones of long lists Embarrassed

I would have loved to see Genesis with Gabriel, and I would have liked to see some of the bands I have seen a bit earlier than I did. But in general I can not complain, most of the favourites have the box ticked (Genesis, Yes, ELP, Rush, Queen, PF, Marillion...)

That's an interesting list, moshkito, actually. Must have been a Gas to see PDQ Bach! He had quite the sense of humour.
Out of all listed, i would have given the world  to have seen Nektar 74-75-that must have been something!Thumbs Up

Nektar was better live than on the record for me. The original version os Marvellous Moses was way more satisfactory than what finally came out in "Recycled" ... and that album is my favorite Nektar album of all.

It looks like I am one of the few folks that likes "Sounds Like This" a lot more than their "progressive" stuff, and the main reason why, is that you know who those people are, and you can relate to them one on one. And their anthem to Jimi Hendrix still is not heard! (The Preacher).

PDQ was great. In the Arlington Theater in Santa Barbara, there are these balcony/varandas on the left side, and the show started with a woman screaming, a bunch of white bed sheets tied together thrown over the varanda, and him coming down from the varanda on them, and then run to the stage to get there ... on time! The musicians warming up had nothing going and closed it with his last step on the stage!

Perfect opening!

A moment later, after he has apologized for being ... slightly late ... he composes himself, fixes his attire and then stops in front of the microphone and points to the back of the theater and says ... "you lady, over there! You gotta have guts coming to a concert dressed like that!"

I have his book autographed. Lovely moment and concert and a total treat that should be on video!

I have seen Kansas twice, both in Raleigh, NC.  They were supporting their latest album Somewhere to Elsewhere the first time back in 2000 or 2001.  They were supporting Yes, who played eight songs in two hours.  Big smile

The latest time I saw them was a few months ago.  Great show.  I reviewed it in depth somewhere around here.  I got good seats for ten dollars.

I did manage to catch VdGG way back in '76 on that brief North American tour.  I saw Crimson in the Discipline days but that was not my favourite KC era.  I saw Tull several times through the 70s.
I saw Gabriel solo several times, and Genesis without him once, but never caught the two together.
I 'd mention Yes but they were never a favourite prog act of mine.  :)

I never saw Pink Floyd.  Really big miss there.  :(

As for current favourites--I discovered PT too late to catch a recent tour, but I did go see SW and Grace for Drowning.
Unless Riverside gains a whole lot more North American popularity, I may have to travel to see them.  I'm making plans for the tour that will follow the new album.  :)

I have seen Genesis - but alas it was 1978 without Gabriel and Hackett ... it was still Prog, but only just. I did have the opportunity to see them in 1971 (Nursery Cryme Tour) when they played Bedford Corn Exchange, but I wasn't into them then so I couldn't be bothered to go. I did see Principle Edwards Magic Theatre in the same venue around that time - that was a superb show by an often overlooked band.

Lucky you, they are one of my big misses, although having their excellent DVD There's Know Place Like Home helps (got Device-Voice-Drum too which is also very good).
