I don’t like categories and prefer the term "Prog Music".

However, subgenres DO exist, and I most like Prog Metal.

well i hate labels in music, why do we always have to seperate music into genres??? i like prog music and i don't care if it's rock, metal or electronic.

These genres I like very much:

- symphonic prog

- Canterbury

- Italian prog

I like some art rock, neo progressive, Kraut rock, prog folk, fusion and space rock.

There's very little prog metal I like

I don't like the RIO and electronic music I tried.

I never checked out Zeuhl yet.

Well, subgenres are good for finding new bands that play a style similar to what you already like. But the subgenres are very loose, and often it is difficult to put a band in a certain slot. And it's extremely difficult to describe what a subgenre should sound like.

I would have gone for the option "I like all subgenres ESPECIALLY prog metal" but as there was no such option, I went for the first one.

My favorite ones of the subgenres:

http://www.progarchives.com/top-prog-albums.asp?style_id=12 - Canterbury/RIO/Avant-Prog
http://www.progarchives.com/top-prog-albums.asp?style_id=33 - Electronic Music
http://www.progarchives.com/top-prog-albums.asp?style_id=32 - Experimental/Post-Rock
http://www.progarchives.com/top-prog-albums.asp?style_id=30 - Fusion
http://www.progarchives.com/top-prog-albums.asp?style_id=17 - Kraut Rock
http://www.progarchives.com/top-prog-albums.asp?style_id=15 - Psychedelic/Space Rock
http://www.progarchives.com/top-prog-albums.asp?style_id=11 - Zeuhl

One of my favorite bands, "Van der Graaf Generator", is in my opinion very wrongly listed under "Symphonic Prog", but they hardly fit into anything. They have touches of avantgarde and experimental as well as psychedelic and even prog metal (anyone who has ever listened to "Vital" will know what I mean). They are pretty unique and can't be put into any sub category.

I ONLY like 2-3 subgenres of Prog.

I can sort out Art Rock, Symphonic Prog and maybe one or two more that I like the most.
The few genres I don't like is the same genres that I have listened too little to to have a real opinion.
(Was it too many to's?)

I can't say that there's any genre I dislike, but I do have definite preferences. There's not much in these categories that I don't like:

http://www.progarchives.com/top-prog-albums.asp?style_id=12 - Canterbury/RIO/Avant-Prog
http://www.progarchives.com/top-prog-albums.asp?style_id=33 - Electronic Music
http://www.progarchives.com/top-prog-albums.asp?style_id=32 - Experimental/Post-Rock
http://www.progarchives.com/top-prog-albums.asp?style_id=30 - Fusion
http://www.progarchives.com/top-prog-albums.asp?style_id=17 - Kraut Rock
http://www.progarchives.com/top-prog-albums.asp?style_id=11 - Zeuhl

With the other sub genres I'm a lot more picky, and when it comes to prog metal there's nothing I would actively choose to listen to although I can't honestly say I actively dislike it either - it just doesn't really engage my attention.

I have favourite bands among every sub-genre, even neo-prog, which is usually crap!  Classic 70's prog, electronic/space music and innovative modern prog are my favourites tho.

You can't really say you ONLY like 1 sub-genre 'cause they really are quite vaige and alot of it can be put in many catagories at the same time.

But anyway I PREFER psychedelic/space, symphonic and Art prog the most, and sometimes Electronic.

Well, i like most genres. However, I don't like Prog metal nor Kraut rock. I have had only slight encontours with Italian Prog (but i like what i heard) and with Zeuhl (not bad). I love symphonic, canterbury (i'll never spell that right), most fusion, art rock, and prog folk. All the others that are left i like, to various degrees.

Although I like the idea of subgenres, in some ways it is quite confusing. If for example you were to play VGG to someone (as Baldjean was indicating) without telling them what subgenre the music had been categorised, they could give a number of answers.

I think you need a degree in the subject to work it all out

and I'm far from finished the degree yet.

I could go for any of the options depending on how I feel at the time I was asked. I moslty listen to early to mid 70s stuff, and although I feel that Symphonic Prog is the purest form of the genre, I'll listen to pretty much anything  thats progressive. it's all good
