Alright, not trying to rant, but locally, and seemingly everywhere in the underground US music scene, a lot of metalcore bands are just adding progressive to their genre. Progressive Metalcore, Hardcore etc. Now I wouldn't mind if these bands were actually living up to the titles, but they seriously all sound the same. They aren't doing anything to "progress" music. And the music isn't that technical. Most of these people don't even know who King Crimson is  or how to write sheet music. There are exceptions to this rule though. Like The Dillinger Escape Plan and Periphery. I'm curious - why do you think they're doing this? To come across as more sophisticated, or perhaps to broaden their potential listener base? I guess it's not a horrible thing to do on the surface, but if you're in a group "competing" with groups like that, perhaps you think they're cheapening a standard that you've worked hard to achieve?

I do agree with the premise of this thread though: bands like After the Burial and Within the Ruins sound nearly identical to countless other bands. Some metalcore bands realized they could get more fans if they changed time signatures occasionally and added sweeps to their sound. They could then label their music "progressive" and all the new kiddy musicians under the age of 16 are like "wow, did you hear that breakdown? So mailto:br00t@l" rel="nofollow - br00t@l . i think it is to atract eyes towards the genre, or bands searching for "new" experessions, but how well they are doing that is not for me to deside

See, I'm in a mathcore band. We change signatures like every 4 measures haha. have you heard Mew, Elder08 they have a math element in their music that will apeal to you and, bands that utilise the mix of shoegze, mathcore and dreampop is to me more progressive then those progressive metalcore bands you are refearing to, in the first post check these two songs -------------

I feel like when I go see local bands and they have this amazingly large following and they suck major butt I feel like my efforts are being undermined. It takes me 9 to 10 HOURS to write a song because of the level of thought and complexity that I put into it.
If you are a musician that puts love and hard work into your music, you are going to be undermined THE REST OF YOUR LIFE. There will ALWAYS be some horrible band that's doing better. Just face this fact and screw the thought of "fans" and "love" all together. Make the BEST DANG music possible that you can make and when your life is over you can look back and be WAYWAYWAY PROUD of what you did.
If your goal in life is to be famous and get your d1ck sucked by hordes of fangirls then I understand your frustration. But that is not my goal, and it shouldn't be yours, so don't worry about it. Eventually the world will catch on. Look how long it took Tim Smith and the Cardiacs to actually get noticed. He has been making music since 1977. |
