in this poll it is important to focus on the whole aspects of the band, musicianship, longvidaty, album quality, song-writing

which band features the best musicianship, drumming, guitars, vocasls, bass, contrast in dynamics between light and dark in the music, what contrasts the two bands

like which band has the best drumming, the drummin by B.J Wilson and Bill Ward

who is the best guitarsists, Iommi or Trower/Mick Grabham

Brooker or Ozzy/DIo

i notice one thing, both bands like to play dark music, moody music, powerfull music, Black Sabbath is the founder of heavy metal, the doomy type of metal, but Procol Harum have a certain darkness to theri music that i would name doom ish,

Procol Harum are nice, i'm definitely not their biggest fan, but i can go on and on about Black Sabbath anyday.
I love everything about the Ozzy years and i honestly think they haven't released a bad song that period, yes.. even in their last couple of albums too. I'm not so familiar with the late 80's stuff because i don't like Tony Martin's voice at all. So the Ozzy years are more than enough for me to vote for them. I love this band!

Procol Harum.  I like the Ozzy Sabbath a bunch though. But Procol at their best (e.g Shine on Brightly thru Broken Barricades) are almost untouchable.

(btw, I'm not judging by musical ability; that's not too relevant for me personally)

i feal Sabbat and Harum is related somwhat in my head Shocked

More emphasis on keyboards from Procol Harum causes their darkness to come across with an "Art Rock" form , where Sabbath in the early days were heavy sounding.. However...Black Sabbath had Rick Wakeman on the "Sabbath, Bloody Sabbath" sessions and even prior to those sessons with Sabbath Vol. IV the usage of mellotron revealed a different side to the band's creations.

B.J. Wilson I thought was a finer drummer than Bill Ward. B.J. seemed more progressive and Bill Ward was a pounding "Hard Rock" drummer that fit the style of Sabbath on the first 3 Sabbath releases. He doesn't tone down until "Sabbath, Bloody Sabbath". I believe it is all based around the reality that Black Sabbath took on a different musical direction with the later albums. Regarding the levels reached by both bands in the early days, I can honestly say that although "A Salty Dog" is one of the greatest "Art Rock" ballads ever written, there is no "Hard Rock" or "Heavy Metal" band who has ever written a song as fine as "The Wizard".

Robin Trower (to me) didn't truly sound polished on guitar until the album "Home" or "Bridge Of Sighs" where Tony Iommi worked on sound structure for "Master of Reality" and came across with a inventive sound that defined Sabbath. Robin Trower utilized distortion , yet was basically asked to play leads when the band felt the time was right......which meant he was sharing a lead instrument role with 2 keyboardist's. So he didn't exactly create the Procol sound , but added to it. Tony Iommi was the force and sound behind the style of Black Sabbath. Neither one of them is on the level of a guitarist like Ritchie Blackmore or Jeff Beck. Their roles as guitarists had more to do with creating the right mood for the band's original sound. Iommi more than Trower.

I don't really know much Procol Harum other than that one song that was really famous, so I won't vote. But I do love Sabbath's Master of Reality.

Black Sabbath by a long long long way. Procol Harum wasn't responsible for inpiring much at all as opposed to Sabbath who single handedly changed the face of a great deal of music forever.

Making this choice is so tough...having to leave one or the other out is just wrong...but...I love Procol Harum and think they've had more high quality albums than Sabbath and have been more consistent over their recording career, but the first 5 Sabbath albums were the blueprint for my favorite metal genre, doom, so I have to go with them.

"Whiter Shade of Pale" vs "War Pigs", "Home" vs "Volume 4", Gary Brooker vs Ozzy, Robin Trower vs Tony Iommi...even though I can't stand any Sabbath after Ozzy left; for me, Sabbath still wins them all.

I shouldn't really vote here but I do anyway. I completely love "A Whiter Shade of Pale", other than that I've heard some average songs here and there and the only album I own from PH, the masterful "Something Magic", not a single weak song on there. Especially the story of the Worm and the Tree is of course shining a light on something that Sabbath never really got around to do. I guess major concepts weren't their strength (which is strange considering the incredible lyricists they had). The closest Sabbath got to something similar would be albums like "Seventh Star" and "TYR" I guess, but they are far from concept albums imo, more of very coherent albums theme-wise.

Anyway, I own and love every single Black Sabbath album released to date and could speak (or write) of my love for them for hours and hours, so they win without any doubt.

A reference to Chaucer ("as the miller told his tale") -- not a lot of that ilk in ol' Sabbath. Ermm

Those classic bands both belong in your collection, but for entirely different moods and occasions.

Just how utterly ridiculous do these comparison polls have to be before some common sense kicks in/prevails?
Even if this were in the Off at Tangents Thread it would be considered frivolous (and that takes some doing)

I like both bands. I also like foodstuffs that are sweet and sour. I like cats and dogs. I like women with short hair and long hair. I like many things that are completely unrelated to other things (but I ain't gonna start a poll about it)

Someone needs to go back to prog rock school. Procol Harum were the pioneers of prog rock, my friend. Remember, they had 3 albums out before Yes, King Crimson, and all these other prog bands even existed!

Peter Gabriel and many other famous prog rockers have cited Procol Harum as a huge influence. Their first album came out in 1967, for Pete's sake.

I suppose that's the inference, but the poll question is who is the better band, not who I like more; not the same thing at all. However I would understand this to mean technically.

Take concerts f'r instance, I've some good ROIOs by both and Procol are very tight and cohesive live while Sabbath (as Tony said in his book) made loads of mistakes but carried on regardless. They were actually very tight with RJD in the band and for the other line ups.

Both are very innovative in their roots to rock progression. I can draw a line from Bach to Procol, similarly so with  Stravinsky to Sabbath (harmonically).

I've much more Sabbath than Procol but both are crucial to rock collections - which is what these polls are really about.

Obviously Black Sabbath are one of the most influential bands of the 20th century (probably just behind Beatles and Led Zep), but looking over how I'd rate their albums, and have many I have by them, Procol Harum win it for me. Shine On Brightly is one of the best albums ever made IMO, and all of them are incredibly listenable and upholding a bar. (Never got why Something Magic has such a long rating on PA as well - one of their best, beating Grand Hotel).

During the 80's I remember having listened many times to nice tracks of Black Sabbath, both from Ozzy's era - The Thrill Of It All, The Straightener (Studio Version), Under The Sun Every Day Comes and Goes, Snowblind, Children Of The Grave, War Pigs, as well as others I can't remeber now, and that few but intense years with Dio - Heaven and Hell, Children of The Sea, The Sign Of The Southern Cross, Die Young. And there is a song which doesn't have much of the genre but is quite interesting as well: Laguna Sunrise. Fluff has also a somewhat different atmosphere.
