This poll is about what you use the most to listen to prog. I went with "Home Stereo". I love to hear new things in the music on the home stereo that I missed in the car, due to road noise. How about you? Got a favorite type of equipment to listen on? Does it matter a great deal to you? ------------- If it's worth playing, it's worth playing loud! |

Pink Triangle Anniverary turntable with an SME V arm and Lyra Lydian cartridge, Audiolab 100W pre and power amps and Mission 753 Freedom speakers. Headphones are Beyer Dynamic 550s and all albums are archived onto a Pioneer CTS9000 cassette deck using metal or top quality chrome tapes.
And no - I don't have a CD player (I use my computer with its terrible reproduction) because I much prefer analogue sound quality. Indeed, I've just bought a copy of The Snow Goose on pristine 180g vinyl, which has made my year. I also understand IQ are releasing Subterranea on vinyl which will be another of my favourite albums which I can listen to properly. ------------- A TVR is not a car. It's a way of life. |

All of the above except for the last option. The computer takes the lead though in the quantity department/ I have a good surround sound setup in my music room where I can get loud and not bother my wife.

Car stereo, mostly out of necessity. I like privacy when I'm listening to music. The home stereo has become more and more of a "special occasion" listen, unfortunately.
edit: I get a lot of privacy at work too, luckily, since I have my own office. But even then I can't play my iPod dock too loudly without being disruptive. I can play it loud enough to hear what's going on, anyway.

I went with large headphones but in reality it is a combination of home stereo/headphones/computer because it just depends on who else is home at the time and what time of day (I do a lot of listening at night). Alas the hubs is not much of a prog fan (or a loud music fan)... :( ------------- We have done the impossible, and that makes us mighty. i live in a lof in a industrial building and i have my cabinet maquer shop 5 feets away so in my loof is computer amp and speakers +bose eadphone noise cancelling in my shop is the same computer amp speakers and mm550 sennyeser with bluetooth transmiter from the computer just amazing and playing loud and clear ------------- Looking for music contact ME [email protected] 10,000 cds on my computer great way of living |

I'm not good enough to vote in your poll apparently but, most of my prog is on vinyl. That is largely because my mind could never justify the cost of buying a cd which contains music I already have on vinyl. So while 50% of my listening is done on the road, the prog is mostly played on my semi high end home stereo. Holy Moly, tape some pennies on the stylus. Or if you live in a rural area you may have to use a stack of nickles. ------------- This space intentionally left blank |

Technically, none of the above. My computer is my main entertainment center, but "computer speakers" is disparaging. Granted they're M-Audio AV-40s, but going through a 24-bit, 192 kHz interface is not like sh*tty laptop speakers. Its a personal choice. I will always listen to vinyl, if its available on vinyl that's what I buy. CDs to me are overpriced for what you get, very bad pressings of overly compressed recordings that lead to listener fatigue...at least for me anyhow.
There are many, many vinyl issues that sound better than CDs. All my Porcupine Tree sound better than the CDs, but I blame Steven Wilson since he is so obsessed with sound quality. Hence everyone wants him to mix and/or remaster their recordings.
Since I listen to Prog Rock/R&B/Jazz/Prog Metal......once the music starts I never hear any pop, crackle......Distorted guitars, drumming, synths and everything else covers a slight pop everyonce in awhile.
Now if I was a classical music listener...probably do CD or Digital only so I can hear all those quiet passages undisturbed....but I am not.
All of my early Rush albums still sound pretty damn good....but I am a fanatic for taking care of my vinyl and always use better than average equipment and keep everything aligned as close to perfect as possible.
But that's just me......! -------------

I also prefer the mixing in the 70's (of course there are more than some crapy ones) to the mixing done today. I feel today there is to much analizing to the instruments and to the overall mix. |

Very rare - Vinyl or CD + home stereo (usualy not even connected my turnable, a question of limited space) ------------- Prog is whatevey you want it to be. So dont diss other peoples prog, and they wont diss yours |

Computer Speakers and my Room Stereo, first and foremost. I try to avoid earplugs/headphones, but I do have my seasons where I listen to a lot to my MP3. Mind you, I realize that a lot of stuff sounds better with headphones, lots of details you can't hear on PC speakers or even in my room. I still do not drive, but I love choosing the CD's for the car. I can't wait to listen to my stuff on the road!

I once saw a graphical depiction of a wav file for Rush's Caress of Steel from an LP and another from a CD. The LP wav had an easily discernible large dynamic range while the CD wav had a very small and nearly unnoticeable dynamic range. For whatever reason it seems to be the norm to use a lot of compression when reissuing an LP release on CD. The argument I normally hear is that most people listen to music in their cars these days and quieter passages have to be boosted to be heard over road noise. Perfect technical specs matter little when humans are making decisions not based on perfection. ------------- This space intentionally left blank |

^ That is correct, bands, mixing or mastering engineers are trying to find the point where they have enough compression but still maintain some dynamic range. Of course some take it to the extreme of having no dynamic range at all. The idea is that the listener wouldn't have to adjust the volume according to the song dynamics. 70's albums have loud parts against very quiet parts that are barely listenable, and compression solved that "problem", but it did got us to where we are today, not saying if it is bad or good. |

Again its about personal choice....I could never do serious listening from my laptop speakers, the fullness of the music just does not exist. I could very well be wrong but my guess is the best a set of Logitech speakers will do is 80/90Hz - 20kHz freq range with very poor efficiency, especially with very small 25mm-50mm drivers.
I can't imagine any sound stage existing past 1m distance or less (Dean can advise better than I in this matter)..........But its a choice, as long as we are listening to music, its all good.
I have a lot of CDs and digital music....but I will always prefer vinyl. -------------

The difference between laptop speakers and home stereo is huge. If i have to listen through those speakers it's only for background music not for listening with my full concentration. I spend a lot of time listening with my iphone, which is one of the best sources today, and some excellent earphones, shure se215 to be exact, very good quality for being on the road. |

My laptop, through the laptop speakers, when exploring new stuff, which I'm doing mostly these days. I prefer listening to prog on my stereo, but my CD player works when it wants to, my prog CD collection isn't that huge, yet, and I'm skint right now, so I have to make do with Spotify, YouTube and pretty lousy speakers ATM. -------------

I agree....Mc is nice but wayyyyyy over priced nowadays, SACDs never really took off either. Hi-res downloads of 24/96 or 24/192 seem to be gaining ground. But I am fine with redbook 16/44.1 with the external DAC I have now, sounds brilliant!!!. Plus hi-res downloads are expensive and I would rather use the money on vinyl. -------------

When I'm at home, I listen to my record collection or my digital files (via ps3) through my surround sound system. But when I'm on the road I have a cassette to 1/8" cable I use to connect my Zune so I can listen to my Mp3s there. I wish I had everything on vinyl, but unfortunately some of the more obscure prog bands can be difficult to find in the local Half-Price Books  ------------- I know what I like, and I like what I know. |

I use my desktop computer, hooked up to a pair of Swan M200 MKII speakers. They serve me beautifully. If I'm missing any quality, I don't know it. When I'm mobile, I use earbuds with my ancient Zune. |

I use an iPod with high quality earbuds when 'out and about' and I also plug the ipod into the car when driving (the system in the car is actually pretty good). I love listening to music on the home theatre/music system (5.1 surround) - especially the Porcupine Tree/Steve Wilson stuff recorded specifically on DVD-A for that. I also enjoy the concert DV's on that system. -------------  Proggernaut (Noun) - one who is exploring the endlessly expanding universe of progressive music.

At work it'll be some Sony/Panasonic micro CD hi-fi, in my car Sony CD system and, finally, at home I employ a proper, decent Hi-Fi set up (fantastic Marantz integrated amplifier, great Sony Blu Ray/CD/USB transport, couple of floorstanding award winning Tannoys and a handful of handpicked QED wiring). I only listen to the music from CDs, blu ray audio discs and high resolution files. No lossy files then - waste of time. Blu ray player is linked to the Marantz through digital caxial audio cable to omit its built-in DAC and use instead the fabulous Marantz' one. When I cannot use speakers I use reference AKG headphones.

You have one of the first Sony CD players, like from the early 1980s? I have always wanted to treat myself to one, but then I heard some rumors that they are not always compatible with the modern CDs (esp. CD-Rs). What's your experience? |

Thinking of getting a modest desktop setup with dedicated DAC and headphone amp. Would connect a small nettop running a squeezebox type server to stream files (FLAC) to the DAC. |

I do not....I have an audio friend in St Louis that does, he bought this along with the PSU and is just getting around to breaking it in. So far he really likes it......What I like is it gets you into the DSD and DXD realm for little money. Understand I am not a big fan of DSD/DXD simply because there is nothing you and I would listen to in those digital formats available for download...There is some jazz coming and classical music, which makes sense..but not much else. I also like that is battery powered so the noise level if any, would be inaudible...looks like it can charge your media device too...cool DAC for sure http://ifi-audio.com/portfolio-view/micro-idsd/ -------------

In the living room it's my Rega amp and Paradigm speakers. Streaming through my Roku when I listen to Ian Beabout's show it's my Bose home entertainment system. In the bathroom it's just a little iPod hookup box. In the car it's the factory installed Boston Acoustics system. When I'm working in the yard it's some of my old cheapo equipment I still had on hand and moved to the garage. Speakers placed accordingly so I can hear in the front and back. ------------- a.k.a.
