Greetings, I'm a very frequent user but I rarely post in the forum and today I must because I noticed several irregularities.

In the top 100 and the top albums by year lists, wich I use a lot, since last week several albums by Steve Howe, Rick Wakeman among others, as well as Various Artists (Tribytes) have been appearing.  Albums wich didn't have enough ratings but now are all over the place.

Case in point: http://www.progarchives.com/album-reviews.asp?id=17840

27 five stars ratings and not a single review.   Clicking the last few users wich rated the album I found a patter wich you should check...

http://www.progarchives.com/Collaborators.asp?id=39685
http://www.progarchives.com/Collaborators.asp?id=39684
http://www.progarchives.com/Collaborators.asp?id=39678
http://www.progarchives.com/Collaborators.asp?id=39673
http://www.progarchives.com/Collaborators.asp?id=39663

Those are just the last 5 to rate that album.

Please look into it, it looks like a single user creating multiple accounts to inflate the rating on those albums, mostly by Yes and its members.

Thank you for reading...

Yes I reported this yesterday.  And this individual seems to be making even more accounts.  Angry

No worries.  I posted it in the reviews reporting thread.  Glad to see someone else was on to this baffling dedication toward ratings manipulation.

Do you rate a bands discography with 1 star ratings..........you mean you subject yourself to a a band you evidently do not like so you might give every album a one star rating??? not too likely.........grow up and at least have more respect for the site!

That's ridiculous, not just his one stars, but his consistent use of giving the same ratings to a band's discography.  And I can''t believe that he's heard a great many of those albums -- aside from mistrusting his looking into various discographies when he doesn't like them, his tastes are not consistent enough -- I'm not just saying that cause I see albums that I love that he's given every star rating to, well, partially I am, but that I find it hard to believe that he could  think various albums bad when I see what he likes.  He's just trying to prop up his favourites probably, without hearing much of the others.

Obvious he is not even true to his own taste in music and does the site a disservice by rating manipulations.

Some of them are careful. For example 1 star for all Yes albums after Drama.

I have another idea for admins. I think he is a little bit kiddy, and likes to destroy and see the results. Maybe we can slow down his possiblities. A newly registererd user should only rate one album a day for a certain time. Or every user must be doing at least one review before he can rate (other) albums. Hopefully he gets bored by slow progression of his work of destruction.

It's not up to admins, it's a technical issue and up to a webmaster.

I don't think this idea of "at least one review" will be implemented ever - ratings without reviews are primarily here because of non-English-speaking people.

As for the "one rating a day" at the beginning, for what is worth, I like the idea, but I don't think the site owner do.Smile

I hope this is the place to report this. Yesterday while writing my review i checked other ratings too for that album.
The album rating was very high, and out of 9 reviewers, 6 gave the album 4 or 5 stars but one reviewer gave it 1 star which seemed pretty weird. I entered the person's review list and found out he has 2480 ratings without a single review! or forum posts, and it seems about 70% is a one star rating, and for entire discographys too. For example the entire Residents discography that includes about 60 albums got one star rating.
This looks very weird and is suspicious, worth checking out IMO.

If you would like i can post a link to his rating page.

Scratch the 'if you would like' next time, simply post the link and save us all some time (or send a PM to an admin with the link if you don't feel like putting it on the public forums). Awaiting the link now...

At least he likes UZ

But yeah, that looks pretty manipulative to me.  People don't understand that finding something not to your tastes doesn't mean it's sh*t.

Yeah what's the deal with bashing those albums, i'm sure he didn't listen to most of it. I mean if you dislike the Residents so much why do you keep listening to their whole discography, this is so obvious.

That list does look fishy, but it could be that he has a sibling, roommate, or friend with many of those albums, so that's why he heard lots of them.  I heard all of Rush's albums due to a friend who I shared a house with for six months -- and boy did I get really, really sick of them. It can be pretty difficult to avoid music in such cases.  And he offered me plenty of cash to trash my Bauhaus CD; instead, I yan and yang lumber punched him (go taste a tart and then eat my lunch).

I agree with a lot of his not Residents ratings, but damn, he should be shot (joking of course with the term) for these:

I don't buy that he's listened to  a lot of the ones he has rated, maybe briefly sampled them, and others he probably has never properly listened to.  And with Le Orme I noted that he rated lots with ones, but the ones he rated higher I agree with, and I would rate the same (best is Contrappunti for me as well as him).

His ratings of a particular bands' albums commonly do vary,.  And it did seem to me like he may going after a lot of little rated ones to bring sown the average.  Is he trying to manipulate lists? I don't know.

Hello,

I have counted 1665 "1stars.gif"on this page !
(and 0 review)

These ratings are not credible at all. When someone doesn't appreciate a progressive band, he doesn't listen to the 30 LPs of the band !

Not linked to the recent manipulations going on, but there's a guy here who's rated 58 tech/extreme albums in total, and is averaging a rating of 1.00 Just a bit silly. The problem is where albums only have a couple of ratings, it does distort the picture for others looking for feedback on potential purchases.

Then again, I think you are right. And I would like this not to be happening too, but again we have to face the eternal struggle between rules/guidelines and right to more or less free speech.

It's not right, yeah, but how do we prove it ?

I'm afraid that Jose Natal has caused damages that will be hard to fix. Just an example:
after his ratings have been removed, this album

Jon Anderson Searching for the Songs album cover

Shows

4.43 54 ratings | 0 reviews | 40% 5 stars

But there are only those:

^ I've just submitted a rating only review for this album and then deleted it. The score and number of ratings does correct itself exactly as Rob states. Given the huge number of albums that were rated by our South American miscreant, short of Max running the rating calculation across the entire album database, it's maybe gonna take a real long while before everything is back to normal. .Unfortunately the bulk delete of all the offending entries does not update the ratings

Of course I don't think he has purchased all the 1-stars, but he's not rating whole discogs with the same stars.

Over 1000 1 star albums

Posted By: ExittheLemming
Date Posted: June 30 2012 at 19:05
^ Glore (Lorenzo Gentilini) has rated at least 9 artists exclusively as one star (Steve Howe, Neal Morse, Devin Townsend, Angelo Branduardi - the latter may have stolen the reviewer's lunch money?) I can't be ar*ed deleting them all but I have sent a PM advising disingenuous reviews are about as welcome as a burrito in a diaper etc - probably not an english speaker anywayUnhappy

I'd suspend the clown and delete twenty to thirty ratings a day until the job was done.

so f*cking what...

Don't know if this one has been spotted yet.

Zero reviews, zero posts in the forums, 5 stars to the complete discographies of VDGG, KC, PT and ELP (even to In The Hot Seat Confused).

A few 2 and 3 star ratings and the fact that recently he does not rate whole discographies at once makes me doubt but he is certainly not careful with the ratings.
Location Russia...

^ IP address used is legit (St Petersburg, Russia) but yes, entire discographies that attract unwavering adoration is probably well dodgy (I'm the biggest ELP fanboy in the world but wouldn't rate either In the Hot Seat or Love Beach 5 sparklies innit?Confused) I'd be more concerned if entire discogs were awarded one stars. Can't justify deleting anything however.

If your ratings are sincere why would you need to ask others to confirm their appropriateness?

Why do you think we allow you to submit your opinions in the first place?Confused

  2. Genesis (all eras)
  3. ELP
  4. Mahavishnu
  5. Marillion
  6. Pink Floyd
  7. Queen
  8. Rush
  9. Robert Whyatt
  10. Yes
I always ask myself

If somebody dislikes two albums of a band, enough to rate them with 1 star...WHY IN THE HELL DOES HE/SHE BUY ALL THEIR ALBUMS?

This guy parafulmini hates all PFM, but he wants us to believe he bought 18?

Even more, he says he bought 22 Banco del Mutuo Soccorso just to rate all of them with one star

Unless he's a bloody masochist, he never heard more than one album, maybe two.

Iván

PS: The Mystical, I find your ratings fair, mostly because you tell us what you think in your review.

Take a look at this, sad how a band, seemingly serious about their music, actively asking for people to create an account and rate the album.
Another example that ratings without review is abused to the point whereyou cant trust PA's ratings anymore.

I can understand why this irks you so but I'm afraid there is nothing inherently wrong in inviting people to be favourable about your 'product'. After all (and this is the bit that maybe sticks in both our throats) they appear entirely unfazed that their art has been reduced to a commodity that obeys the same laws of supply and demand as that of bananas. (Although bananas are perishable, not digital so it's a crap analogyEmbarrassed) I'm old enough to remember when musicians were supposed to have precisely zero business acumen. Now it seems it's me whose hopelessly out of step and it's actually tertiary qualified entrepreneurs with DAWS who stand the only chance of longevity? Just waiting for the music software boffins to release a plug in for Pro Tools called 'Edgy Angst Dissolution V 2.0'

Any man who is able to respond intelligently whilst making reference to bananas is gold in my book.

and he is, of course, totally right as well. Sure music has and always will be a commodity, but when you start slinging it out like this, then it gets to be too much for me.
I do not think it breaks any guidelines though.

Yes, they got nice ratings from the reviews, so its not like they manipulated themself into a top spot, and they are entitled to promote their music,  what sticks in my eyes, is how obvious it is to them, that they should use the weakness in PA's rating system (anyone can rate without much effort) , if they want to stay on top of the list.

Sadly this issue hasn't been resolved yet because rating bots are still out there...
