I'm new to the whole forum thing. And honestly it's not quite my thing, but my brother persuaded me since he has one and has been a member since 2007, so he speaks good things of PA. And also I figured I'm a music lover so it might be nice to see others' opinions. But I'm just kind of wondering on how to get started. Any tips or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

I was reviewing albums before I even ventured into the forums. Find a topic that interests you and just jump in. Lots of discussions that don't even involve music if that interests you....

1) Have you written any reviews yet?
2) If you have any questions, you can address them to an admin ... or me. Pick me . Just PM us, but don't start any threads just yet is my recommendation. You can quote people, you can edit and delete your posts, in case if you didn't know that. What did I miss?

Naturally, she is just messing with you. You will encounter a lot of hotheads on the way, so try not to argue too hard with anyone. This is probably the first healthy advice I have given so far.

The biggest purpose of this site is the database of music. You look for albums you like, try to find some that are related etc.
I would say the most common start on these forums is something like "I really like band xxxxx and album yyyyyy, could you guys recommend some music for me?" and you will get lots of responses because that's what we like to talk about here.
Like
I've been really into Magma since my mother played it to me through here abdominal wall, but now it's a bit tame, can you recommend me something a bit more challenging?
And the wolves will come running trying to meet that challenge.

Welcome to PA. Hopefully you will find us to be a friendly group to BS about music and whatever else with. Might I suggest that you let us know what bands you have heard and like, as that is always a good starting point and I am sure that there are plenty of folks who would be happy to suggest other artists that you might like.
My best advice though, is that if your brother is who I think he is, make sure that you post contradictory and argumental posts in response to his posts. I am sure that he would really appreciate that.

I'm also trying to expand my horizons a bit more. I grew up with Yes, Rush,Kansas, Boston... etc... anything more along those lines? Also, I'm trying to start writing lyrics kind of as a stress reliever method but I'm really not sure how to start... my brother is the singer in Epignosis. So I'm trying to get enough so I can review his albums and I also need help with that... haha Thanks again:)

I figured that you were probably Rob's sister. It is a pleasure to make your virtual acquaintance. Rob is a good PA buddy.
Might I suggest the band Saga to you. They are in a vein similar to Rush and Yes and Asia. Their most popular album seems to be Worlds Apart, so you might want to check that one out.
I wish that I could help out on the lyrics and review advice but neither are something that I am very good at.

You want to expand your horizons? Considering bands you cited, not exactly horizon expanding but you might want to check out The Gourishankar's 2nd Hands. If you want to step out further from your comfort level, The Resident's Animal Lover:
The main vocalist, whoever he is might be a bit hard to take. But Molly Harvey... "When I think about my father
I see a silver ship
Sailing on the oceans of nirvana
When I think about my father
On his sad and lonely trip
I wonder if he misses me and mama"

I don't know if that qualifies as a mistake, but I certainly got dinged for writing a poor review on Can's Future Days.

I read it - it was actually an excellent review (never mind the fact that it's my favorite album of all time ), but you must have gotten dinged for applying your own rating system. If you'd just left that last part out, I'll bet it would have passed muster just fine. Otherwise, very well done in my opinion.

Well, for starters, ... don't judge anything PA has initiated . Secondly, try not to argue too hard with anyone and don't attack anyone's opinion. I found it a good idea to just yield.
On a sidenote (you won't get dinged, but you may be embarrassed):
Try not to ask any questions the answers on which you can find yourself; the collaborators and admins are very sensitive about this issue . Also, if you are really lost, but to others the answer may seem to be obvious, try to be as specific in your questions as possible. I failed to do so in my "Obscure Prog Facts thread disappeared" thread, and it was closed before I had an opportunity to make some things clear. Better yet, if you have a question, send a PM, don't start a thread. Other than that, you can start polls and stuff like that ... but they have to be fun .

I would say Kind of Blue is pretty straightforward. If you don't like jazz you won't like it, but beyond that...
I loved both on first listen so it's hard to say. As for introductory albums, that's also hard to say as it depends on what you like. Chick Corea's Now He Sings, Now He Sobs might be worth a try, or some EST. Piano jazz I think it generally a bit more accessible.

Yes bring it, also bring Porcupine Tree, and Dredg (If you have it) I've come to like Dredg...

Hi and Welcome!
My advice here is to watch out for guys who look like an Andy Warhol verson of Fred Flintstone.
Oh and get a copy of Glass HAmmer - If.

Well, quite different in sound, but might still appeal...
