It is once again time for America's Favorite Pastime: Major League Baseball. As with previous years, this thread is the thread to talk all things major league baseball. Hopefully, many of these discussions will start off: "Did you see how far Prince Fielder hit that home run!!!!"
All things are pointed towards my Tigers having a great season this year. Angels and Rangers will both be tough this year. And the Yanks and Red Sox will be there at the end, as always.
I'm not really thrilled with the new playoff format. The only thing that a 2nd Wild Card team does is give the Red Sox or Yanks a chance to make the playoffs in a year where the Rays or Jays end up surprising them with a good year. The one game playoff is probably a huge advantage for the number 1 seed team, as the wild card team that they play will probably have to use their best pitcher in the play-in game in order to assure that they make the playoffs.
Anyhow, GO TIGERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and post away.

Well the Yanks will be in the playoffs as always, will we get past the first round? This is the question![LOL LOL](smileys/smiley36.gif) Still got A Rod, Swisher and Teixeira aka the Trifecta of post season failure.
But we did dump AJ! For once..the opposite has happened and the Yanks gave a player to the Pirates and the general reaction here was "THANK GOD!" or "lolgood take him" An NL team, with low expectations...this may be good for him. He was already an average pitcher and could not handle New York.
We'll see. We all know baseball is the most mental sport, and somehow some key Yanks need to jump their mental hurdles, and the overall team needs to gel (which has never really happened since A Rod came and especially when he upset Jeter).
ALSO RYAN BRAUN DID STEROIDS! Or did he? Honestly, havn't really followed the story but everyone is saying he got off a failed test on a technicality? Some "administrative loophole" or something. I'm sure he did it, and now when we though they were at least cracking down, questions can be raised about testing itself? What a mess![Cry Cry](smileys/smiley19.gif)

I don't know what to believe with Ryan Braun. He has just always sounded adamant that he didn't do steroids and that the test was a mistake. I was watching ESPN and one of the people that they talked to said that the results that the tests came back with were fairly impossible. I don't recall the details, but it was something like the tests showed his system had 5 or 10 times the steroids level that a normal positive test would reveal. Kind of as though the steroids were poured directly into the sample. I haven't really read or saw anything else regarding that though. Unfortunately, the fact that he was cleared because of a technicality will always leave that question mark, even if he truly is innocent.
On a happier note, the Tigers are now 4 and 0 after beating the team formerly known as Florida 3 to 1 today.

Ahhhh yes another sub-sub-sub par outlook for the Seattle Mariners. We should get swept by the Angels and possibly Rangers. I'd be happy to go 500 against the A's.
We made no moves worth noting.
And why we did not offer Manny a 1yr contract makes no sense to me!!? I kept saying..."give him $700K, and another $700K for 30HR/80RBI (SEA had nobody in the top 50 for RBI's).
The only reason to go to a game at Safeco will be to see Pujols literally hit one outta Safeco.
I'm already done with MLB 2012...... ![Angry Angry](https://www.progarchives.com/forum/smileys/smiley7.gif)

Well, Carlos Guillen announced his retirement today, so apparently he won't be having a career resurgence in Seattle this year.

Yeah that reminds me, what was that crap I heard about banning alcohol in Boston's locker room? Did they have some issue with it? After that glorious collapse they needed it. :D

Fair enough, guess I should've said "did you really expect it?"
And yeah, can't say I'm really happy with more teams in the playoffs. Watch Tampa win the division again, while 2 other teams take the wild card...think they'll just amend the rule to say "Let in the Yankees and Red Sox"?

Close this thread till October. |
It's been hard for me to care much about what goes on until the post-season gets near. Having so many games per season of course waters down the importance of any one game (in stark contrast to NFL football), and the new playoff rules now, as you mentioned, add more wild cards into the pot. Back when I religiously followed baseball statistics, it was fun to check out box scores and batting/pitching stats in the paper, but now that I care less about that, there's little reason to really pay close attention.
The Braves are my team. They're not the dominant team they were in the 1990s, and our city has gotten in the habit of poo-pooing the team any time they fall short of getting to the World Series (which is most of the time now). There are some great young players on the Braves now, including last year's Rookie of the Year (closer Craig Kimbrell) and the close runner up (1st baseman Freddie Freeman). We've always had a pretty good to great pitching staff, but the batting has been pretty weak in recent years. I'm hoping some of these guys can start hitting more consistently. Last year's end-of-season collapse was almost admirable in its total and utter unthinkable crappiness.

They are by far the best team in the worst division of a very top-heavy league.
Also, I agree with seemingly everyone here that the playoff expansion is a bad idea. I'd say moronic, myself. Playing in the snow won't solve their current problem of baseball becoming irrelevant as soon as fantasy baseball playoffs end (seriously, it's the only thing keeping the league alive).

I mean yeah, playoffs lose a bit of their meaning when you allow too many in. Winner of each division, and a wild card is fine. Even though you now have more teams, and thus more chance of someone making a crazy playoff run, if loses its fun when they have no right being there. Ah well! We can't gripe too much. The moment one of our teams makes the playoffs through the second wild card and goes on to win the WS we'll be celebrating and trying to tell others "hey its just how the rules are now stfu"

The thing about St. Louis is that they have loads of young talent, from David Freese to Jamie Garcia to Jon Jay to Alan Craig and countless others. They're only going to get better, and they have more than enough bats to make up for Pujols' departure.

The thing about St. Louis is that they shouldn't have even made the playoffs last year WITH the best hitter in the game (well, second or third best at this point).

Don't get me wrong I see your logic, but I think most of that team overperformed last year while the Twins very much underperformed.

You're assuming a lot if you think that young talent will develop enough to replace one of the best hitters the game has ever seen.

I like the Cardinals so whatever![Approve Approve](smileys/smiley14.gif) Happens every year anyway "gahhhh (x) really didn't deserve it, they had this and that and (y) was really a better team and etc" unless we go to no playoffs and base it purely on record not sure what some people want.
But yeah boo new playoffs and anything could happen but it does stand to logic the Cards won't be up to par this year. In the next couple of years though, who knows? I'd like to see them succeed.

Winning your division is more impressive than winning the World Series. Anything can occur in a few short series. So when you see a wild card team win it all, I don't think it's unreasonable to say that they overachieved.

Nah not unreasonable and hey, there have been times throughout sports you kinda shake your head at who went so far, but that's why its a playoffs! One series or not still got beat those better teams.
I'd like the Yanks to actually win one series in play offs for once.
Unrelated wonder how the Sahx will respond to their record collapse. Want to say they'll get over it but the Mets never recovered from their epic collapse, I wouldn't mind the same fate falling on Boston!

I can't agree with you there. The Tigers have the arguably the best pitcher (Verlander) and hitter (Cabrera) in all of baseball while the Twins have giant question marks, at best. Former stars Mauer and Morneau are in rapid decline and their pitching staff has an aging journeyman as it's #1 starter (Pavano), the most consistently inconsistent #2 (Liriano), and extreme flyball pitcher Baker at #3. They also no longer have the defensive advantage over teams they had when they were hosting at the dome.

The Tigers and Mets are going to a shootout tied 7 to 7 after 10 innings. Oh wait, apparently they do kiss their sisters during exhibition ball as the game is ending in a 7 to 7 tie. Unfortunately, Jacob Turner got smoked for 6 runs including a grand slam. Early returns are that he will not be the Tigers number 5 starter as had been originally hoped coming into Spring training.

Though I had to listen to the game on the radio, it sounds like the Jays played a great game. The exception was one bad inning by Ricky Romero. I couldn't even concentrate on my work during the 9th inning, but then the game went on for seven more. ![LOL LOL](smileys/smiley36.gif)

I was discussing that with my brother this morning. There must be some sort of payment/charitable donation out of these apperances, right?

Bah, I've no TV to watch the games with, and MLB TV seems a waste (blackout restrictions!)
Though Go Red Sox, whatever they're up to.
I'd rather watch Netflix anyway.
BTW Red Sox are gonna suck this year. Since when were Buchholtz and Beckett reliable pitchers, plus the new kid and the converted reliever? Our Bullpen seems wiped. Our offense is going to be lackluster too. I've simply no 'opes, for 'em.
Best thing that will happen at Fenway this year is The Wall. What a great show, I wish i could see it again at the Fens!

I did not see that.....but hopefully in some manner, Ali is approving these public appearances. But I agree, even if he approves someone should talk him out of it.
Many people may not even know who he is.

Ryan Dempster pitches a gem for the cubs and then washed up Kerry Wood comes on in relief and issues three walks in a row. Where was the manager? After two maybe it was time to change. Dempster struck out ten and then ...........

OMG that was such a fun game today. Beating the Sahx 10 - 0 with 5 home runs was absolutely awesome. Only bad part of the game was losing Fister to an injury. Hopefully it is just short-term.

Possibly the best win in Tigers' history and I wasn't there because of Easter. 3-run home run from Cabrera in the bottom of the 9th to tie the game 10 - 10 and send it to xtra innings, and a 2-run walk-off home run from Alex Avila in the bottom of the 12th to win the game 13 - 12. Yeah, we are 3 games ahead of the Red Sahx.

The Red Sox are gonna suck this year. I predicted it and it is coming true. I will edit this post in September if need be.
Our pitching staff is a joke, Based Loaded Beckett, Lazy Throwing Lester, Balkin' Bucholtz, Player to Be Named Later and the other dude.
Man, I don't even watch the Red Sox or know their roster this year and they got my blood boilin'!
All I ask is that they are in contention until june, when I can finally relax and watch some games.

Looks like run support could be an issue for a lot of my fantasy team's starting pitchers, especially Strasburg and Zimmerman.

All about the Royals.
It's our time.
I really think we may gradually become the next Tampa Bay Rays story.

It's not like those comments were unexpected, I'm just glad he's out of the AL Central so I don't have to watch him be a smartass all season.

Well so far so good for the Mariners....4-3 after last nights 9th inning comback win. Lets see if they can at least walk outta Texas with a split, that would be epic.
As far as Ozzie goes.........well this is not the first time he has proclaimed his liking of Fidel Castro. As a latino myself I cannot fathom even the thought of Castro doing anything right...ever.
Ozzie is Venezuelan and I am sure he feels much bro-love for Chavez too....so I can see why he feels emotions for Castro. But he has been in the US too long to not understand the hatred that most Americans have of Castro and my God, especially in Miami.
Once ok that's a mistake but twice...nahhhh he's an idiot in my book now.

I was at both Tigers' games on Saturday. I am still thawing out, it was so frickin' cold. The Tigers were losing 8 - 0 in the top of the 1st inning. After 3 innings they had no baserunners, and I commented that the only thing that we had to look forward too was Harrison pitching a perfect game. I had no clue that one had actually been thrown until I read about it on Sunday.

One of my co-workers was there with his father and he said nobody really was getting excited till about the 8th....by the 9th the place was screaming!
What are the odds to throw the 21st perfect game on the 21st day of the month?? Need a supercomputer to figure that one I think

All the games that I go to, the only no-hitter/perfect game that I have seen pitched was the Galarraga one from two years ago that wasn't because the umpire blew the call on the 27th out, so Galarraga had to get 28 outs instead, so it was 1 more than perfect. I was in attendance in Toronto in Doc Halladay's rookie season when he took a no-hitter into the 9th inning against the Tigers. Bobby Higginson hit a pinch-hit home run to put the Tigers back into the game; they only lost 8 to 1 (or something like that).

I typed a long response here. Then I went to add one sentence and accidentally removed the whole post. In summary, it's approximately 3.26%. It's actual very reasonable.

Give or take, yes. It's actually irrelevant that it's the 22nd game probabilistically. It's really just a question of saying, what's the chance of a perfect game being thrown on the 22nd of the month? This technically varies a bit because seasons start and end on different days every year. Also, certain dates are slightly more likely to fall on certain days of the week. However, none of that greatly affects anything so the 3.26% is a good estimate.

I didn't do the calculations for the entire year. I only included the year. For example, the number estimate I gave came from me taking the numbers of days over the span of the season (not the number of days with a game played on it) and dividing by the number of 21sts.

Did the Mariners use ringers last night??? Was that really Ken Griffey Jr, and Tino and Edgar Martinez, and maybe even Tom Paciorek out there swinging the bats for the M's? Scherzer walked the lead-off hitter, and of course I said "There goes the perfect game" and then the 2nd hitter got a single so of course it became "There goes the no-hitter" and then they just kept hitting and hitting and hitting. Scherzer had given up 10 hits in 4+ innings. He is such a Jekyll and Hyde pitcher. Very inconsistent. One day he is shutting the Yankees down for 6 innings in the playoffs, and the next he is giving up 10 hits to the Mariners 3 days after they are on the wrong side of perfection. And yes, it was frickin' cold again last night. Where the hell is the 80 degree weather that I had to work through in February and March???? ![Angry Angry](smileys/smiley7.gif)

This is a brutal road trip for the M's......I was predicting a 3-7 record, I have now changed that to 4-6 ![LOL LOL](https://www.progarchives.com/forum/smileys/smiley36.gif) . I always felt the M's play eastcoast teams well including the NYY.....but for some reason the Central teams they struggle with.
Well there you go......it was the weathers fault!! We like the cold so the M's were fine with it..
