Ibanez makes good starter guitars, as does Squire (Fender subsidiary).

The lower line Yamaha models are good too. I think they're called Pacifica or something like that.

The Pacificas have a whammy bar. It's decent. I don't use it though. I got a lot stronger springs so I could put on medium heavy strings. :-D

Fender Stratocasters aren't bad, but some get too spendy. Stay the hell away from Epiphone and Squire.

Squire are nasty. Although I'm not keen on Ibanez generally, their starter models seem to blow away most other brands in the price range, and they do 7 string starters, I think.

For $400 you might want to consider checking out some 2nd hand guitars.

Depends on where you live and whats available (garage sales, auctions etc) sometimes you can get lucky and buy something pretty decent.

Picked up a pretty reasonable Washburn electric appx 18 months ago for a couple of hundred bucks.

This is what my yamaha pacifica sounds like.

I got bored and recorded this.

It has the humbucker on rhythm the first time and single coil the second.

And opposites on lead...blah blah. Oh, and if anyone DOES listen to this. Sorry about the microphone, it sucks, and I had it in a bad place. :-D

I'd sell you mine for $400 :-D

Thanks for all the feedback. After I almost broke my friends ibanez guitar during a Vai style dive bomb i said " Man I got to buy my own". So I contacted a friend of mine who was going to let me  buy his Gibson guitar, but when I got a hold of him he said that he was going to study at Berklee and that he is taking the guitar with him. So in a fit of rage I bought an OLP Petrucci guitar and a floyd rose trem. Can't wait to get my hands on it, but I will let a pro install the floyd because I know I will ruin it.
