There are some great bands from other countries, but UK has the most.

The UK bands started it all and have the edge IMO. At one point, all my favorite bands were from the UK.

Yes, so far, I gree with all that my fellow members have said. Not only did they pave the way for other countries' bands did (under the patterns of their own peculiar idiosincracy, of course) in terms of basic symph prog standards, but also the UK gave birth to some other avant-garde stuff that called itself ultra- or more-progressive (Henry Cow, for example). But this is just a poll, not a judgement on national values on music, right? I stil prefer Mona Lisa's 'Le Petit Violon' to ELP's 'Love Beach'... and Mezquita's 'recuerdos de mi Tierra' to Genesis' Abacab...
Regards.

Britain, historically and now -- many, many prog heavyweights!
Italy a very respectable 2nd.
(Then Germany, then USA.)

Must be Great Britain, because is the country where almost all the prog-rock started, and almost ALL descent rock music since de 60's... however, Germany, France and Italy specially has produced and promoted very nice and impresive bands... let's see whta happen next

I'm a "don't care" on this one, there are many fine bands from the all the countries listed, and a good number have members from various countries. As long as the music's good, I don't care where it originated!

Altough the monsters (Genesis, Yes, ELP, KC and PF) are from UK, and was in UK where prog rock began, I think that the most beautiful, refined, elegant and original music came from Italy.

SWEDEN!!
didn't see Sweden in the list, though - bummer!
maybe there's more UK bands, but there should be more good progressive bands per capita in Sweden, at least nowadays. My vote will therefore have to go to the UK.
but, Planet X and Spastic are US, mind you!

I must admit I don't care about the country a prog band comes from. Music has no boundary, and you have good prog in (almost) every country on earth.

I think it depends on the taste.
UK has the higher percentage of early bands and all of the Big 5 are from England, is by far the country that has more prog' bands.
Italy has a special meaning, they embraced the symphonic prog but adding the classical Italian sound and their unique personality.
USA is one of the countries that mixed with better results prog and hard rock, bands as Kansas or Pavlov's Dog have harder edge but keeping intact the prog essence.
Germany: Home of Triumvirat, and the country where Kraut Rock was born
Netherlands: Their unique style created around a very solid guitar work is extremely beautiful, with bands as Focus, Supersister, Finch, Earth & Fire, etc.
I could go on and mention many more countries like Sweeden, Israel, France, Argentina, etc. but the point is that no country has the best prog, UK has the biggest number of bands but nobody can assure they have the best bands.

Scandanavia (although not a country*) would be a close second to Britain for Flower Kings,Par Lindh,Anglagard etc.
*Officially that is
BTW Did anyone else avoid this thread at first because they thought it was about some terrible hybrid of Country music and prog??! .

I agree with Peter. However, even though Britain has the highest number of prog bands, I voted for Italy, since, like Avis, it tries harder...

I did this poll because I think that it is important becasue there can be big differences down to wheree the music is from. Different social conditions in which it is produced etc...

there is no right or wrong answer in this, just so thats clear

i didnt say there is wrong or right, and sorry of you misunderstood me i was just saying that music is the one language all people understand
and about social conditions i think you have a point, but you sometimes find english bands doing songs about berlin wall or veitnam, that's what i meant, nice poll though

Hey there!
Can you recommend me some Egyptian bands? and if so, where can I get music from them? Despite Mexico is a great beholder of the prog scene every year having great bands over the country and all, Egypt is that region in the world I haven't heard of and I just can't stop picturing and imagining how its prog music could be... dunno, maybe some ethnic mixture, some arabic strings within... wow! Please keep me posted!

wel thanx a lot i was afraid first to write i am from egypt as the world media give a very bad picture of as here being people with beard riding camels, but things arent like that here, we are a very civilized country, i am in listening to progressive rock since i was 12 that is 10 yrs ago, and i never rode a camel although i am a big fan of theirs
about egyptian bands, i'm so sorry they are local bands no production or anything just some jazz bands released some albums, and some local concerts but if an official prog album is released you'd be the first to know

I don't know. Every country was good doing what they were doing. You can't beat germans on electronic, don't even try.
The Québec prog scene was doing well in the 70's (Harmonium, Maneige, Pollen, Et Cetera...) until the refuse of separating from Canada in 1980 killed everything in music. Right now, I can says Québec is one of the best in the world in making Post Rock, and just original music finnaly.

I also think so from on the 90's!
Best music from the 60-70 break came from England (IMO), but there are many good prog countries too in Europe. And I think there's many countries which prog scene is not know to me (yet), so...
