I searched the phrase 'progressive rock', found & joined this site.

At the time, I think there were about 20 members all in all & since then, rising in the ranks through newbie, groupie, senior member, collaborator & for the last several years as a member of the Admin Team, I've seen this site develop from a fairly primitive website dedicated to the music I love to the huge concern it is today with over 38,000 members & containing exhaustive detail of nearly 7,000 bands.

I've seen members come & go, I've seen names change, alliegances change, I've seen friends won & lost, I've made some extremely good friends, I believe in suggesting Opeth in the very early days, I'm probably responsible for many prog vs prog-metal etc arguments (), I remember the Shred in its very first incarnation as a bit of whimsy called the Maria Carey Thread... and yes, I remember Velvetclown...

I've survived the Queen wars, the great Radiohead revolution & seen ELP's stock go up, be brought down as the most reviled act on the site, to back up again; I've also seen approximately 20,000 threads dedicated to Dream Theater .

+++sigh+++

I've seen some changes...

In June of the same year, I done a serach on Progressive Rock, and found this site too.

I too have lived through the great Radiohead debates, but to be honest I can't believe there has only been 20,000 DT threads!! Pitiful.

I have ranked my favourite Genesis albums countless times, ditto Rush, Yes et al.. I have made some good friends and had some good nights out as a result of singing up here, and that is probably the best thing about PA. That and discovering a lot of new music of course.

My first Avatar was Fly By Night by Rush. I had it quite a long time. Then Chopper joined and took it while I had dropped it for a while.

I hopped on about two years later than 2004.  Seems to have matured a bit from it's original incarnation and yeah, sucked in by an internet search.  At the time the now defunct AOL Progressive internet radio channel had become my main avenue of discovery.   AOL quit doing that not too long after this site became my main avenue of discovery.  Sad, I credit them with my discovery of Djam Karet. Ozric Tentacles, Porcupine Tree...

This site gets the credit for being my main avenue of getting into Radohead.

Apart from the first month, when I had one of the generic site avatars, this has always been mine.

And I don't believe I missed out references to the great prog-curry nights

I found the site looking for Prog radio. I used the page of links here to find my favourites before eventually delving into the forum to take on a chap called "Reed Lover"

I actually remember more or less what I did February 2nd 2004. My wife and I had to live with a friend for a week because our new flat wasn’t ready yet. So we were a bit outside town, probably making dinner together with Eirini and certainly drinking wine and ouzo. I had no idea this site existed at the time.

November 20th 2006: I had been lurking here for a few months and even tried to join (without success) when one of the admins (M@x, I believe) sent me a mail, asking me if I still was interested in joining the site. Needless to say, my answer was yes.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isnt the site as a whole celebrating it's 10th anniversary next year?

Quite possibly - it did exist in a primitive form prior to my finding it in 2004; not sure it had a forum in those days...

I arrived here by accident, when I first starting getting into prog it was through Yes and I visited a Yes forum quite frequently...one of the members was sharing a band he enjoyed, and linked to Progarchives for the streaming sample.

Since then, I've grown interested in new music faster than ever before, acquired music faster than ever before, met some great guys, and spread my taste far beyond what it was at when I got here.

I discovered this site in the fall of 2004, when I was googling for Traffic, a band that I became fond of in those days.
ProgArchives has become my favourite site since then (Bookmark #3) and it helped me to update my knowledge of prog.
Being conditioned to stand along the sideline, it took me some 43 months before I signed up and jumped into the forum.

Me too - considering I've been into prog rock for nigh on 40 years, this last 8 years has expanded my knowlege of the genre exponentially (not to mention my CD collection, which has grown in direct proportion to the drop in my bank account ) - it really has been a case of

I had to drop out of the whole crossover evaluating because of the have to buy factor.  You really hate to place limits but there is only so much time in the day and even less money to buy music...

I'm pretty sure you've had that same avatar the entire time.LOL

I found this site looking up reviews for Dream Theater, Opeth and Phish albums while at a beach house in summer '05. I didn't join until later that fall. I think I was a instigator for Miles Davis' inclusion.

I remember a lot of love for 70s prog, symphonic prog in general, Dream Theater, and Porcupine Tree when I joined. Does anyone remember the old Dream Theater vs Symphony X polls? Things have changed a lot with members leaving and new ones coming on board. I remember when there wasn't much Frank Zappa discussion, and then all of a sudden there was.

I'm a relative n00b compared to most of the posters in this thread.

I was cataloging my CD collection by adding the albums that I own into an Access database including the track listings and their times.  I found myself googling/searching albums on-line in order to look up track lengths for CDs that didn't have them readily available on the CD or CD booklet, and found myself directed to PA multiple times with these searches.  I eventually moved in, and here I remain, despite a few half-hearted efforts to leave.

Short answer: No.

Long answer:  I'm an accountant and therefore anal about keeping records.  One of the motivations behind it was to learn how to use Access, since I was only mildly familiar with it at the time that I started the project.

I'm Class of 2006. I was extremely idiotic, had a greenish vampire avatar, was kind of trollish in my love of DT, and loved to make senseless polls.

Matt's avatar has always confused me.  I've never understood how a cat could be A Person.  Or is it A Person could be a cat?

It's time Robin Trower was added to the site. if nothing else, this should be done in tribute to Jim's amazing contribution to the site.

+++sigh+++

I've seen some changes...

Well, you're my senior by four days (I believe), although I didn't post in the forum much for a few months...

Yup, there were some tremendous fights (sometimes degenerating in brawls), with Maani's laissez-faire attitude...

the Threefates & Karn Evil Nine ELP camp, the always funny Reed Lover, the useless VC posting, Peter's (how's he doing, btw?) colour-filled (almost psychedelic) posts.... The first few PA member meeting (London, The Hague, Canterbury, Carmeaux),  the religious debates, etc...

them good ol'day... Kind of miss them really... miss Trotsky (Martin), Joren and a few more too.

I'd guess that 9000 of my 11K+ posts date from the first four years I squatted the site... I think I was average just under 3000 post/year >>> a pace which should amount to 24000 today, had I not slowed down

I eventually moved in, and here I remain, despite a few half-hearted efforts to leave.

iTunes or Windows Media player didn't do a good enough job for you?
Short answer: No.

Long answer:  I'm an accountant and therefore anal about keeping records.  One of the motivations behind it was to learn how to use Access, since I was only mildly familiar with it at the time that I started the project.
Oh good grief - I was using Access to catalogue my CD collection long before iTunes was created and long before Media player had a "music library" to do that for you. In those days even ripping a CD to PC was a task that took several hours and some external hardware, and Gracenote (CDDB as was) was still a little used toy in the GNU library.

Rapidly approaching my 5th year - though I was lurking on and off for quite some time before then - I do remember when each album page had the discography strip down the right-hand column - that took ages to load and was a right pig to navigate. I came here looking for anything on Tirana, then again looking for somewhere to spam the band I use to manage (I didn't in the end  as I was sure they wouldn't fit in here). I don't recall exactly why I joined the forum, though I'm sure it was to correct some heinous error in a post by someone or other, arrogant know-all that I am. Then fell in with the wrong crowd in the Grey Room and it was all down-hill from there really. I do remember my first "collaboration" - I wrote the biography for Godley and Creme. Then there was Crossover - or just Me and Mickey lording over it like it was our private play-pen (not really, but we can dream) - that was fun - The Dear Hunter, Seventh Wave and Mansun will be the three bands I'm most proud to have added to this site (small victories).

Anyone remember on a band's page, there would be a "Top albums" by the band; usually reserved for album's with the best ratings/most ratings with good ratings?

...Man, that triggers a vague memory of a member called Geck0 with that avy, but that was long before I was active enough in the forums to know anybody who didn't review a lot on the front page too. As far as I am aware, James has always been James.

I entered the prog portal at the end of 2004, and I think I'm on my 3rd avatar (don't remember the first, but had Harry Enfield's Scousers for a while; sadly meaningless outside the UK). I've met lots of interesting people in London, The Hague, Brussels, Paris, Carmaux (RIO fest) and possibly beyond, seen some amazing gigs, discovered some fantastic music and enjoyed quite a few meals, at least 50% of which were curries. I'm not on here so much these days because real life has encroached rather too much, but I still look in most days and still consider myself an active member.

I also fail to remember any of Rico's other avys.

Good God...hard to believe I joined this thing in 2005. Still haven't found that goddamn prog radio I was searching for when I found this site. I want to say my first post was in a silliest/funniest song title thread (or perhaps a list your top 10 favorite GG songs thread), which is fairly accurate with respect to what I do most of the time here. The old days were a blast indeed...Velvet clown, Joren, frenchie, Reed Lover, Karn Evil 9, Useful Idiot, Danbo, dude, Maani...the whole lot of you old fuddy duddies. Wink Great times with Cyggie, Stonie & Ansen in the just for fun threads and plenty of laughs with all the old to somewhat olde garde of the MC/VL/VR crowd. Site was a lot simpler then. I remember being able to download songs from the 'chives, the strip of albums down the side of a page (which was a blessing), country listings, being able to make polls in the prog lounge, and no such thing as crossover or prog related. I also remember a failed experiment with a new forum organisation of seperating everything by genre. Things certainly have changed.

Don't even remember how I got to be a collab, but started on the ill faded Site Monitor team and now I am here on the fusion team. I had a different avy for about 2 weeks and then found the lightbulb of my life. Of course all along been finding more and more great music thanks to this site. What a ride.

Here's to the old gaurd, past or present. Beer

Oh, and, uhh...congrats Jim on sticking aroud all this time. Tongue

I vividly recall James' avy when I joined; a beaming Robert Wyatt (pre-accident I think).   That was when I didn't know a soul, but this was the first forum I'd ever felt comfortable at and was content to gradually, somehow be a part of things.  I realized before too long this was definitely my crowd.

Cheers Jim, good thread.

And that's not to forget Alexander (a 13 year old Californian with a frighteningly vast knowlege of the Canterbury scene), Stormcrow, Threefates (with a scarily vast knowlege of Greg Lake ) and one guy I hit it off with straight away... a certain Peter Rideout.

After a couple of years of taking the rise out of each other on the site, he PM'd me & asked if my Vicky and I would care to come out to Newfoundland to spend a couple of weeks with his family on vacation. Despite everything your parents tell you about never meeting up with people you only know online (he could have been a 35 stone Alabama serial killer for all we knew), we decided "yeah - that'd be good as a one off"... we've now been 4 times & plan to go again next year:

The irony is, when Peter & I met - it's as if we were twins separated at birth (I'm the one on the right... I think):

Sweet thread!
My avatars have been

then I liked Gabrielle Drake so much I just rotate variations of her from now on.
such as

I remember The Velvet Room, earlier shreds, the psychedelic words thread, and countless polls about Rush and Dream theater. My first post was "Hi I'm new and would like to learn more about Prog." or something like that. I joined 2008 after googling for Van der Graaf Generator or King Crimson. Until then I frequented the Strawberry Bricks guide TO PROG.

I remember getting invited to be a Prog Reviewer as i was writing many reviews of my collection. After that I was addicted to PA. i am one of the survivors of the Bjork hate club.LOL
