Do you ever hear a song on the radio by pop or mainstream rock band and think, "That sounds proggy..."?
What are the "proggiest" songs you know by bands that aren't considered prog?
"Foreplay" by Boston (the intro to "Long Time") sounds like it could have been made by a symphonic prog band.  And I almost consider "Viva La Vida" by Coldplay to be a crossover prog record (even though none of their other music qualifies).

Not sure how you can mention The Police without mentioning "Synchronicity II"...

The Police could have been such a fine prog band, if they'd wanted to!  Wink

Slartibartfast: Those are all good songs by great artists, but how would they be defined as prog? I don't hear it.

Plus, I didn't know Elton John was the singer for XTC!

Speaking of Elton John

And honestly, much of his early 70's material (or Bernie Taupan's to be more accurate) was at least prog-related.

Who'd guess those synth boys would release such a soulsy, jazzy, Beatles-y record - they really grew their sound by Seeds of Love.

This one is perhaps not proggy but definitely adventurous, while being closer to their original sound:

This is a personal fave. Ozzy never sounded more progressive - or let me rephrase that: his band never sounded more progressive:

^All due to the writing of Randy Rhodes. His material after RR's death became decidedly more pop-metal. This is my favorite:

I assume you mean without Black Sabbath Wink Ozzy plays some of those synths you hear on Sabbath's '70s albums. He actually owned a MiniMoog or an ARP synth, can't remember what.

Just because it's long doesn't make it prog.  Great song though; seriously, how many times have you heard a southern rock band pull off polyphony?

Some have mentioned the Police, but none have mentioned this song:

Primus (though they're listed as Prog Related so do they count as a non-prog band? Wink)

Most of The Flaming Lips' album Embryonic has somewhat of a Krautrock vibe to it I think:

Two melodic metal bands come to mind, Blind Guardian and Sonata Arctica:

Blind Guardian's And Then There Was Silence. Why I would call it proggy is the length of the song, a chorus that doesn't repeat, or actually no part at all that repeats just as it is, many melodies, highly polyphonic with multiple guitar and vocal lines on top of each other, big fast/slow and loud/quiet contrasts:

Sonata Arctica's White Pearl, Black Ocean. Proggy because of continuity/very few repetitions as above no verse/bridge/chorus, again many contrasts in tempo and loudness, some polyphony, some unusual rhythms/breaks

Both in my opinion more unusual and progressive than many things that so-called progressive metal bands have done, just with the typical melodic/power metal sound of the respective band. Certainly more interesting than Dream Theater ;)

Something classical:

Piano Piece by Edvard Grieg, proggy because witty/funny, changes of atmosphere and tempo, lots of unexpected pauses and "holes" in it.

And two Maiden songs that are IMHO already crossing the border to prog:

(Starts at 1.10)

Enjoy!

Big Sugar are one of my favourite alternative bands ever. The bands style is alternative rock using dirty distortion guitars and a lot of harmonica to the overall sound, mixing some blues and reggae, which truely makes an interesting and refreshing style.

Just check this baby out.

Well as i cant make a thread about it, i might aswell make what i wanted to say be in this post

I always thought that about the Queen song Bohemium Rhapsody, but that song is mentioned in "prog related" on here.

Ive noticed that also in "prog related" is the two Metallica albums "Master of Puppets" and "And Justice for all".  And i started thinking to myself "why have those 2 albums been placed into that camp?".    I mean i was a big fan of old Metallica and i still own their first 4 albums.

The reason why is obviously because, on those 2 albums of theirs, theres a trait that exists on those 2 albums but not on the other albums.   And that trait is..............long songs that last over 8 mins.  There are 2-3 songs on each of those albums that last for over 8 mins.   This is the only "progressive rock" trait tho that exists on those Metallica albums.....lenghty songs.    You rarely get a progressive rock song lasting less than 5 mins, but "lenght" is not the be all end all of a prog rock song.

Prog Rock songs are longer than non prog rock songs, but.......they are structured differently aswell.   On those long metallica songs, they still have the same structure as typical metal songs.  But instead of being verse chorus verse chorus verse chorus....end of song, its just verse chorus verse chorus verse chorus verse chorus verse chorus verse chorus....end of song instead lol.    You could easily concise those songs down and nothing would be ruined from them (strictly speaking).    But you definently could not shorten and concise for example.....the Pink Floyd song Time.  If you did that you'd butcher it, you'd destroy the very thing the songs meant to be about.

Theres only 2 exceptions though in regards to the 8 min plus songs of Metallica's.  Orion from the puppets album, as its a lenghty instrumental that takes you on a journey,  and the song To Live is To Die from the justice for all album.   That song is not your typical verse chorus verse chorus verse chorus song, it takes you on a fair bit of a journey aswell and is not typical metal song song structured.   Also when To Live is to Die ends.....it immediatly kicks into the next song, Dyers Eve.  Those 2 songs tie in together with eachother.   I have seen this done on a fair amount of progressive rock songs.   To Live is to Die and Dyers Eve could actually be merged together to form 1 huge song.

Dire Straits has 2 epics from Lover Over Gold album:
Private Investigations and Telegraph Road

Some early Elton John stuff (1971-1975) have "epic" feel , notable albums are Madman Across The Water , Captain Fantastic
