What are your top 5 favorite bands that are considered "Non-prog"? I'm just wondering to see what everyone's tastes are outside the progressive genre.
1. Led Zeppelin
2. Black Sabbath
3. Deep Purple
4. Iron Maiden
5. The Who

Too many to mention...I like lots of classic power/thrash/metal bands such as:
Pentagram (also known as Mezarkabul)
Forbidden
Metal Church (with Mike Howe)
Testament
early Mercyful Fate (aaarrghh )
Death Angel, Death, King's X, Trouble, Lillian Axe, Mastodon, Agent
Steel, Nightingale, Mekong Delta (will they appear on the archives?),
Atheist (I'm sure that they will...),
but my biggest favourite, one of my desert island disc is : Jorn Lande - Worldchanger

i agree that chicago started out prog...and speaking of the beatles...they did a lot of prog material during their drug era...in fact i consider the beatles pre prog...i doubt the movement would have ever happened without them.

Iron Maiden - you should know why
Faith No More - because of mike patton's voice and musical experimets with rock genre's
Dead Can Dance - that's beatuful
Mogwai - because of those guitar passages combining noise with typical song structure
Nile - those egyptian folk elements are incredible and sound is heavy and quite progressive I can say

The Rolling Stones - my favorite british invasion band.

taking some time off. And yes, those are the Afro Celts.

Actually..look. I don't know enough metal (my other favorite genre) to
make a concrete list. If I made one it would only change every day.
Here's some bands I do like.
-Metallica
-Dimmu Borgir
-Strapping Young Lad
-Nightwish
-System of a Down
-Kamelot
-Helloween
-Evergrey
-Sepultura
-Iron Maiden
-Judas Priest
-Nevermore
-Meshuggah
Put that in whatever order you like. I'll get back to ya in a couple of months when that list is concrete.

to sonic wizard and Cygnux X-2:
both of you are automatically at the top of my most respected forum members list because you like the Lips. I have all of their albums except the first 3 (they're hard to find) but i like them more than 99% of all other music (including prog). I can't wait for their new album. but anyway, my list:
1. Van Halen (the other 1%)
2. The Flaming Lips (of course)
3. U2
4. Led Zeppelin
5. either Incubus or Oasis (their new album "Don't Believe the Truth" is amazing)
