Topic: Metallica plays the Tarkus SuitePosted By: jammun
Subject: Metallica plays the Tarkus Suite
Date Posted: December 21 2011 at 21:54
So the other night I was listening to Metallica's Garage Inc., which is a fine album of covers. And as I listened to it I realized Metallica has the chops to play pretty much whatever they want. Later (and so to bed) I drifted into that bizarre area between wakefulness and sleep and the hammering guitar riff of It's Electric was still in my mind, along with the relative nuances of Astrology, and suddenly I was hearing a hammering guitar riff, in 5/4, just brutal and wicked. It was, in that neverland of my mind...
Tarkus. But being played by Metallica. I had constructed the whole thing in my mind. (I know, I know, maybe time to up the meds.)
I would love to hear them cover ELP's Tarkus suite, if for no other reason than Tarkus is possibly almost more thrash metal than prog, at least Eruption, etc. Maybe I'm crazy. I can just hear Hetfield singing "Has the dawn ever seen your eyes-yuuh", "Realize your are-yuhh". "Clear the battlefield and let them see-yuuuh". You know that annoying vocal inflection I am talking about. I think Kirk could adequately reproduce the Emerson solos, and ol' Lars would be more than capable of a Palmer imitation.
I think it would be a nice ride and realistically I would pay $ to hear it done well. We live on your bones or whatever...the irony of one dinosaur doing covers of another does not escape me.

Lincoln County Road or Armageddon.

Now that you mention it, I agree- that would be cool (and I'm not much of a Metallica or ELP fan).

I actually do think it would fit well. I would like to Metallica from pre-Black album do it though. James' voice has become bitterly generic.

^ I was thinking the same thing.......as much as I have grown to dislike Metallica over the years, especially that Lars, and I never liked King Hetfield......for me it would have had to be ....And Justice For All era.

I don't care which era, though granted the earlier the better. Hetfield's vocal mannerisms were far less annoying around the Master of Puppets era. As said, I had been listening to Garage Inc., some of which falls after The Black Album era, some before. I will say I now have after all these years a decidedly different view of Tarkus, having imagined the Metallica version. It is (at least the suite) a metal album.

I'd like to hear either Metallica or Maiden cover Tarkus. Is there is any cover versions of the song? I've never seen it.

Wow, that would be very interesting, to say the least!
I just don't know if Lars would have the hability it takes to cover Carl Palmer's ground, though.

AT least his ego is as big as the whole ELP put together during the early 70's.

Well it itself isn't so ridiculous, Metallica likes to be purposely experimental and do odd things (which is maybe why their experiments dont often work out) but why not? They collabed with Lou Reed so I guess they're game for anything.

Indeed, and we all know that, in prog rock, ego is hallf of it; the otehr half being originality, inventiveness songwriting, etc.

And sometimes that ratio is more like 80/20

Yeah! It would be fun but alas Lars could never manage the Tarkus stuff, thats for shure.
The main 10/8 riff could be great played in a metal fashion but not by Metallica. I donīt think I would enjoy a cover of Tarkus anyway. The record is so iconic so I can't see anyone/band adding or "spice" up anything on this. Sloppily played NWOBHM etc. is great done by Metallica but not virtuoso technical prog like Tarkus.
But I agree there are thrash/speed elements in Tarkus and other ELP stuff. Same can be said of some of the Mahavishnu stuff! So much energy!

Indeed. Maybe Mekong Delta could pull this one off. . . .At the very least they have already played and recorded Pictures at an Exihibition a couple of times.

I'd be the last person to defend Metallica, but if in doubt listen to Garage Inc. The band can play anything they want, and sometimes play it well. Tarkus is not particularly difficult (hell, even I learned that Eruption riff). As said, I just heard it as a metal song (which it is) in that sweet time between wakefulness and blissful sleep. As ol' Dickens sez, Lars is a ass. But he is a capable ass. I would love to hear a metal band (anyone but Dream Theater) cover the song. It's able to be done.

There are no decent cover versions of Tarkus in its full form. The main issue is the vocals. Only Greg Lake can sing lyrics like ' Did you stand beside the spectro-torch?' and make it even remotely convincing.

I'm kind of thinking they need to warm up with AC/DC's greatest hits.
