So, today in London one of the best ever line-ups of innovative and progressive UK bands* will be playing a free one-day festival under the banner of Roast Fest. It's been organised by Kavus Torabi, a name which is hopefully familiar to a fair few of you these days. As a companion to the festival his record label Believer's Roast has also released http://www.thegenepool.co.uk/items/769.htm" rel="nofollow - a special limited edition compilation with exclusive tracks from all nine artists (plus an unreleased track from his old band The Monsoon Bassoon), entitled The Central Element.

As someone who was sadly far too poor to make it down to London for the fest, I intend to listen to this album at full blast on repeat all day whilst I sob into my pillow. On first listen, it seems like a pretty extraordinary bunch of tunes. Despite the disparity of styles on display (everything from progressive metal to sea shanties) there's a real cohesion to it. Rarely has a compilation been so aptly named.

Am I the only person on this forum who invested in a copy? I plugged it some months back but didn't get much of a response. There is an amazingly vibrant scene of psychedelic, progressive and experimental bands in the UK right now,  and I hope releases and events like this will help to bring them to a wider audience of proggers and non-proggers alike. Here's hoping this thread doesn't turn into another of those ones where I just have a conversation with myself.

*Arch Garrison, Matt Stevens, Stars in Battledress, Redbus Noface, Thumpermonkey, William D. Drake, Knifeworld, Sanguine Hum, Admirals Hard

Why did the above post get merged with this thread? I wasn't just plugging RoastFest, I was trying to start a discussion about The Central Element CD in the featured albums forum, a perfectly legitimate place for such a discussion, or so I thought. I'm all for merging threads where it makes sense to, but this is just stifling debate. Please sort it out, admin! Ouch
