Woah this was tough! Nearly went for Pan's Labyrinth or Star Wars or even Donnie Darko. In the end had to choose Blade Runner. Ace poll.

Lots and lots of good movies in this list but Star Wars A New Hope gets my vote(when it came out it was just called Star Wars,no episode number or anything).

And, I must ask, why only the first Lord of The Rings? The three movies are actually only one, divided to be released on the theaters.

How is Disney's `The Black Hole' not on this list lol?!
I'm sort of being sarcastic, but it's really one of my all-time favourite sci-fi flicks, and if anyone else remembers baddie robot Maximillian, try telling me that's not one of the greatest robot designs ever on film!
Oh yeah, and that film also had one of the most intense and haunting visions of Hell ever committed to film, still freaks me out now to think of it.
The score by John Barry was amazing too! :)

i thought for 5 sec wtf does Jurassic Park do there, i though dinosours were real and not fiction, but then i realised it is a movie about DNA modified and created dinosaurs and what is more sci/fi then that even if it is bringing in somethingi really old into modern age.

Wall E was great too - thought it interesting that there was so little dialogue (in the first half especially) but you hardly notice when watching.

Loved Truman and Being John, superb ideas for films, and both carried off well by the directors and cast, though BJM (aside from nearly bringing me to tears of laughter when John goes into John's head) did unsettle me. Good stuff.

pretty sad list of films; Contact? Independence Day? Kill me now.. I guess New Hope, but what of Escape From New York, Logan's Run, Alien, Invasion of the Body Snatchers('78), The Thing, RoboCop (okay not great but fun), Silent Running, Close Encounters...

I enjoyed both Brazil (cited by James) and Men In Black hugely (probably because they don't take themselves that seriously) but like Brazil, my fave rave ain't on the list - Dark City from 1998 where very creepy (bald) aliens are able to inject one human's dreams and memories into another to study the results.

I've read the book several times. The original film is a classic genre-defining Sci-Fi movie, the Spielberg effort is a bit of Hollywood ho-hum hokum.

It was between 2001 and District 9, a modern and a classic, but I went with District 9. It has to one of the best films ever made. 2001 was a beautiful film, but the plot would seem a bit unclear for someone who didn't read the book first.

Wow!! Thanks for posting those pictures!!
Aren't his eyes (or that red bar!) terrifying?!
I loved how he never said a word, yet his very presence was so ominious and intimidating.
That `silhouette' shot of Maximillian you posted on top of the cliff in Hell really chills me! That's just at the scene where Maximillian and his creator are joined as one....That was a seriously dark moment
That ending with all the robed figures really scarred me for life! It still seriously unnerves me!

If you going to remake a classic, you really ought to better it... | The remake is a bad movie whether it's closer to the book or not; bad, stinkaroo, poorly conceived, I can't even recall more than 30 seconds of it and I saw it twice. Second, Wells' book takes place in the London outskirts, so Spielberg putting it in New Jersey isn't exactly a stroke of genius (the friggin moron, someone should take away his director's license, the 1938 radio play worked well set in Jersey because it was a live-air American broadcast ).

I think that's what James was talking about, and the remake's out. From what little I've heard, they tried to be somewhat original with their remake, but I'm still a bit wary. The Carpenter film is so good, I'm not sure if I want to see the new one or not for a while.

I was too unborn at the time to see it when it came out, but I saw it ~4 or 5 years ago, I think.
Also, I see now that the new one isn't a remake, but rather a prequel explaining what happened at the wrecked base we see in Carpenter's. Hollywood likes to make prequels almost as much as remakes, anymore.

Remaking perfectly fine movies bothers me. They've been talking about remaking horror classics such as Hellraiser and Suspiria for some time now.. I couldnt see Carpenters Thing being topped as its too good, but you never know. What I loved about Carpenters Thing is it didn't focus on blood but focussed on the transmogrification of the creature, the way it changed, the paranoia and the shock ending. The claustrophobic sets were incredible and Kurt Russel was awesome in this with some crackling dialogue and black humour.

I love 2001 because it is iconic in every scene but it is a difficult movie to watch. Thats why I love it as it challenges the perception. It is a movie to be watched for the sake of watching. it hypnotises you with its slow pace and lack of sound. It has huge slabs of silence and no dialogue for massive parts of movie.

Tired of voting for Kubrick flicks, I chose Guilliermo's Labyrinth. What a masterpiece! I really love the way the two different worlds coalesce, even if one is rooted in the fantastic and the other in real life fascist Spain.
Had The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus been up for grabs, I would have voted for it in a jiffy. An overlooked diamond in the rough from Monsieur Gilliam methinks.

Voted Blade Runner. Simply iconic.
Pan's Labryinth makes me want to rip my own skin off my skull. And maybe someone else's at the same time. So friggin' brutal. Without compromise. I suppose I appreciated it but I never want to see it again.
Empire Strikes Back is by far the best Star Wars movie and the best of my childhood.
