I am in a three peice band that does a lot of progressive music(RUSH, Pink Floyd, Genesis The Shaggs). I have been thinking about buying a bass pedal synthesizer so we can have two guitars. What are some good, not so expensive brands and models? or is this even a good idea? And yes we have tried to find a fourth member but you would be surprised at how few proggers there are in my town.

Our bass player is using Moog Taurus . Probably you saw it in your searches i believe. From rehearsals I can say it's a growling bit of a bass pedal, like most of other moog stuff it's amazing, but it's kind of expensive too. He will use Taurus in our upcoming tour as well.

I used a Moog Taurus I decades ago. it was our guitar players and he would have sold them to me for like $300 ! back then. I liked it alot but there was a tuning stability issue due to temp changes and they would require a 'check up' every now and then. Plus having to kneel down to change a setting etc was a big pain.
You can purchase  a set of midi pedals then link it to control any synth. You don't have to have a dedicated set such as Moog Taurus I or II unless you have the $$$$ !
You can achieve those sounds quite accurately with any synth / pedal controller combo, and for alot cheaper. That set up will be alot more flexible and powerful than the old stuff.

The Moog Taurus II set i saw on Ebay was $1049. by a dealer. I demo'd a Taurus II when they first came out, it seemed like a toy compared to the the 'I ' .Also on Ebay a Multivox knock off for $799.  from a dealer as well. You would do well to buy a used synth and new /used midi bass pedals. Unless you have a few grand laying around for the vintage Moog unit.
