I buy the albums or burn the odd CDR lent from a friend or the library. (i have bought an estimated 4000 vinyls and some 1000 cds throughout my life so I think I am entitled to a bit of copying).
I have not come to grasp (or accepted) the MP3 sound quality and the technology around it. I know I am fighting a lost battle , but I only really switched to Cd in 92, so I am not in hurry for downloads, alkthough I am plainly aware that I am missing on opportunities.

If you want to listen to more prog, buying the album is the only
sensible method. The artists want to live too. Anything but buying is
ripping off the artist.

I agree with Jean. Only albums that are no longer available should be copied on tape from a friend. And as soon as they are available again one should buy those albums.

I only buy full priced cd's if it's something I HAVE to have... (Octavarium... Fozzy's "All The Remains" etc).

In about 95% of the cases I buy the albums.
Sometimes I get copies from friends. Sometimes I get something from the Internet. The last option is just to try things out.

I buy albums , but most of the time I download one or two songs of the band to see if I like them! If I already have an album from the band, then I buy it withou the downloading process.

I only download my songs etc. to test out the artist and make my judgements and opinions before shelling out my money on something that I may not like.
Or to try out new artists that aren't particularly heard of.

Not necessarily. Many people download music to see which albums they like and want to buy and which not. That way they can avoid buying albums they haven't heard and minimize the risk of wasting their money on crappy albums.
And not all people can afford to buy 10 albums a week ![](smileys/smiley5.gif)

As I collect mainly old vinyls, I usually get them from second hand shops. Thus doing this, sadly the msuic maker gets nothing! I was wondering this on some other thread this morning, so please forgive me if I repeat my self under stress.
Those groups which are active get my money, if they release their albums also as vinyls, or I am able to attend their non-free concert. OK, I may even accept to buy a CD, if the music is good enough. ![](smileys/smiley2.gif)

Unlike most of my friends, I am an album FREAK. I love to buy the CD and have them all displayed in my room haha. Plus, prog is usually album oriented, so its cool to have them in full, its kind of like a book to me. Most of my friends think I waste money by not downloading, but I dont really care .

I usually download my music until I get the money to buy the albums. Although some will agree, I 'm sure downloading is helping most artists. I would not have bought some albums if I didn't download them to find out I liked them first.

You don't need to buy anything special, just one lead to connect the output of the preamp to the input of the soundcard. To get rid of (snaps) crackles and pops you need software, but I think there's free stuff to do it. There're topics on these forums around, anyway.

In the past I always bought. But then sometimes I was very disappointed (anyone for a vinyl of "And then there were Three"?) Nowadays I first download, and if I like it I buy it (mainly by ordering it through the internet). If I don't like it, I don't pay. That's as simple as it is.

All of the above. I have to travel about 20 kms from my hometown to reach Manila, just for me to get a record. I usually travel by Light Rail Transit. I have to endure almost an hour of travel to reach the place. Not to mention the untidiness of the record shop ( its an underground shop not too many people in Manila know ). All that for a prog record!
