List your top 5 (or more, if you prefer) concept albums! Doesn't have to be prog, any genre will do.

I'm talking about an entire album that tells a story. From track 1 'til the end ('bonus' tracks aside, I guess).

That would leave out albums such as 2112 (only the first half is one story), Sgt. Pepper's (it was meant to be a concept album, but the idea was scratched), etc. great albums though they might be.

Here is mine:

1. Dream Theater - Scenes From A Memory
2. Queensryche - Operation: Mindcrime
3. Blind Guardian - Nightfall In Middle Earth
4. Jag Panzer - Thane To The Throne (metal, story of MacBeth, has Chris Broderick of Megadeth on guitars)
5. Seventh Wonder - Mercy Falls (cheesy voice-acting aside, has outstanding prog-metal instrumentation/& songs)

Are those question marks for Porcupine Tree if the album is a 'concept' album or not?

I know that alot of the Porcupine Tree albums are supposed to be concept albums (In Absentia, Deadwing, FoaBP, and others I think) but it's hard for me to think of them that way, myself.

Loosely but  i think so.

"De-loused is based on a short story written by lead singer Cedric Bixler-Zavala and sound manipulation artist Jeremy Michael Ward. The album is an hour-long tale of Cerpin Taxt, a man who tries to kill himself by overdosing on a mixture of morphine and rat poison. The attempt lands him in a week-long coma during which he experiences visions of humanity and his own psyche. Upon waking, he is dissatisfied with the real world and jumps to his death."

Concept albums are what really hooked me on prog.

Genesis, The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway - an album about a really f**ked up dream.  I have really f**ked up dreams.
Rick Wakeman, Journey To The Center Of The Earth - one of my first prog albums tie with King Arthur
Gentle Giant,Three Friends or The Power And The Glory, though I'm iffy on it qualifying, if it does, but it in place of TF.
Joe Jackson, Heaven And Hell - the seven deadly sins. Right (anger) has the best lyrics "f**k THIS BULL sh*t SPIT FLAT BEER BACK
ROCK STAR DUMB LUCK SICK JOKE CLAP TRAP
DAMN THIN SHOE LACE YANK SPIT JERK SNAP
BOMB KIKE SCAM BANK TEAR DOWN DEAD FLAG"LOL

Gong - You, yeah I still haven't completed the trilogy but of the two I have, this is still my favorite "cops at the door"

Honorable mention concept sides:
Kayak - first side of Merlin
Kate Bush - second side of Hounds Of Love
Phil Manzanera, 6pm - Cissbury Ring would have been a second LP side if this was an LP.
Utopia , Ra - the first side maybe not as much concept as theme.

Forgot Jethro Tull, shame on me, Thick As A Brick or A Passion Play.  So that's six and counting, sue me. Tongue
Can't pass on Nektar RTF as mentioned previously.
Patric Moraz - i
Jon Anderson - Olias Of Sunhillow
Pink Floyd - Animals
Vangelis - Heaven And Hell
Frank Zappa - Joe's Garage
Gorn, Levin, Marotta, From the Caves of the Iron Mountain - can music performed exclusively in caves be considered a concept album?  I think so.
Marillion, Brave.

oh,
Steve Tibbetts, Steve Tibbetts - surely a concept album about Steve Tibbetts. Tongue

Albums already mentioned I didn't think of as concept albums - Dark Side Of The Moon, Crime Of The Century.  Not to argue or anything, I just didn't think of them as so.

Lancaster/Lumley - Marscape
