I just got this cd and have been listening to it for a couple days. I can't seem to choose my favorite song. Overall, the album is not as good as their earlier music though it's not as bad as I expected (for some reason)
I thought I'd ask you all - What is YOUR favorite song on the album?

I voted for Mad Man Moon, but like Gentle Giant's Octopus (I just voted in the poll about that album): this is again an album without any real weak tracks. Well, Squonk maybe, that is a track that isn't top quality in my ears, but it's not bad either and Collins' drums on it are fabulous.

Mad man moon, just ahead of Ripples and Entangled (all 10/10 songs).
Although overall I much prefer Gabriel-era, this album is an absolute gem, easily in my all-time top 10 albums of any genre.

I'm suprised people like Mad Man Moon so much! I voted Los Endos. It would have been Dance On a Volcano if it wasn't for the naff fast bit ast the end, where they barely manage to play it properly.

That is the worst bit of the song, I agree, but they dont appear to be struggling with it IMO. It was just a naff ending.

I remember an interview at the time, talking to Banks I think, when he said(something like) that they werent e very good band at playing fast, and he singled out the ending of "Volcano" as a case in point. Ever since that, everytime I listen to it, I hear what he means!

'Ripples' is simply the most beautiful song the band ever recorded- the instrumental middle section is prog rock at its absolute peak, and the link back to the lyrics is just sublime.

Squonk.
Love the keyboard riffs at the beginning and during the verses, and, I guess you can call it the chorus, (you don't stand a cha - a,a,a,a - a - ance). Simple, but brilliant!
(edit: sadly mistaken, that's Steve Hacket playing both riffs. Should have listened before posting! )

instead excellent Seconds Out.

I could argue that Trick is the best Genesis studio album ever, esp since the Gabriel-era albums were all so badly recorded.

I'll start by saying that at this point in time, "Trick..." is my favortie album ever, period. IMO, it is second to SEbtP for Genesis' strongest record. Phil Collins and co. show that it was the right time for PG to exit the group.
The thing that I really like about it is that each song works entirely on its own, so the album is like a book of fairy tales. It's hard to explain it, but it really has a "magic sound" about it...I guess this has to do with the unique sound of Tony's keyboards/moogs, and the spectacular interplay between Banks and Hackett. The other thing, is that when you listen to each song you think that it is the best on the album while it's on. For instance, when Dance on a Volcano is playing, I'm thinking "man, what an awesome song.....this must be the best on the cd.", and then comes Entangled and I have the same thought, and as each song comes, it ups the antie a little more until the spectacular Los Endos. I even love the title track which many people think is weak. The music and vocal arrangements do a perfect job of painting the picture that the lyrics describe, and this leads flawlessly into Los Endos, and when it finally comes to a close I want to listen to the whole thing again and again.
As for my favorite, I prefer the three slower songs for sentimental purposes. Out of those I'll say 'Mad Man Mon', as it is the most beautiful song that I have ever heard. Phil does such a great job on vocals, he was always excellent at softer, emotional songs. Entangled comes in at second with the rest of the tracks close behind. If only Steve would have stayed.......What could have been......

Robbery is defintely the worst track. There you can already see Phil Collins' preference for commercial songs. Imagin some trumpets and some saxophones and it could be a number from No Jacket Required. There, my friends, the end was near.....

Robbery Assault & Battery is one I often skip. The chirpy cockney Collins element is quite annoying, but there are some ill placed great moments in there. The instrumental sections are some of the most prog moments on the whole album IMO.
I would say the weakest song is 'Trick of the Tail' I think the commercial Collins thing is most in evidence there, in the 'Doo-wop doo-wop' section (He broke down the door of the cage..etc)
I think all post Gabriel Genesis (up until Duke) suffered from weak lyrics too. Which is a shame because instrumentally, Tony Banks was having his greatest song writing period IMO.

Weak lyrics? Just read 'em. They're more simple than PG's, but just as emotional, and they all tell different stories. Just look at Squonk, excellent lyrics that deal with self pity/depression.

BTW, I know the lyric line in Los Endos is directed at Peter's departure from the band, but what about Dance on a Volcano.....
especially this part:
You're halfway up and you're halfway down And the pack on your back is turning you around Throw it away, you won't need it up there, and remember You don't look back whatever you do Better start doing it right
On your left and on your right Crosses are green and crosses are blue Your friends didn't make it through Out of the night and out of the dark Into the fire and into the fight Well that's the way the heroes go, ho! Ho! Ho!
I think that the "pack on your back" is refering to the band being a burden on Gabriel, and it refering to "your friends didn't make it through"....."that's the way the heroes go" etc.
Anyone have any insight?

I'm not so surprised, if I'm not wrong Mad Man Moon and A Trick of the Tail are two Gabriel era songs that didn't made it into Selling England.
Believe that without Peter to write lyrics they had to look back to some forgotten songs, of course they couldn't include Happy the Man or Twilight Alehouse because were already well known by the fans.
