Anyone getting a hold of some good Prog DVD's?

Just got me first one yesterday, "Van Der Graaf Generator - GODBLUFF LIVE". Watched it over dinner and a good cold Pete's Wicked Ale.

The first part of the DVD is a  concert from the "Godbluff" tour in France, and excellent performance but man, the Director of Photography should've been slapped into next week, it was maddening in that all yo saw were closeups of Hammill and David Jackson, with a few good shots of Guy Evans (would've liked to have seen more of his killer drumming). Hugh Banton was at best getting a mere few seconds of screen time, What gives? But visual deficiencies aside, the musical performance of the entire Godbluff album is excellent (especially "Scorched Earth" and "Sleepwalkers").

The second part fares better, it was VDGG from a Belgian TV broadcast circa 1971. Here, they roared through "Theme One" with gleeful abandon (Guy Evans is one seriously underrated drummer I must say!) and then did in its entirety their piece de' resistance, "A Plague of Lighthouse Keepers", a very powerful and at times very spooky performance. The TV producer tried to add to the atmosphere by including rather cheesy closeups of burning candles and sparklers. On the plus side, the whold band got generous screen time, including Hugh (seen effortlessly creating all kinds of sonic mayhem with Hammond and Farfisa organs and various home-brewed electronic gizmos of his own making). IN both segments, Hammill is alternately a picture of intense concentration and on some long instrumental sections (especially on the Godbluff segment) he prowls the stage like a panther, it's actually pretty hilarious to watch)

If you can look past the visual shortcomings, the musical performances alone make it worth owning. I was amazed hwo well they pulled off "Plague--" with no overdubs and such live!

OK, now your turn, your picks and comments here----------

My favourite one is Kayak - Merlin,Bard Of The Unseen.I like the visuals on this as which incorporates ballet and dancing as well as a bit of theatre.

I also like Rush In Rio with its great audience 'participation'.

Sounds like a DVD I've GOT TO have! But I only have VDGG's H To He... I think I'll buy Godbluff (the album) first then...

I’ve just ordered Godbluff Live 1975.

But the television performance of  Theme One & A Plague Of Lightkeepers I already have, it was included as a windows video format on a CD I purchased called "Masters From the Vaults".

When I read there was a performance of A Plague.. on the DVD, I supposed it was in concert as well… the main reason why I bought it...

But anyway I surely look forward to watch the classic VDGG lineup in concert action.

I got my first DVD a few months ago, but being addicted to music already bought 76 DVD's (A cllient payed me an unexpected bill), my favorites are:

In the Flesh Live - Roger Waters: 5 Stars, closer to Pink Floyd than Pink Floyd.

Pulse - Pink Floyd: Gilmours side of the story, unbeliecable show.

Voice, Device, Drum - Kansas: Great selection, the band still can play but Walsh should avoid singing and remain behind the keys.

Journey to the Centre of the Earth - Rick Wakeman: A classic, sound and video suck, but an historic document.

Live at the Royal Albert Hall - ELP: Good sound and video, musoc os outstanding.

Living With the Past - Jethro Tull: Amazing

Yes at QPR - YES:  Yes with Moraz, don't care for the sound, it's outstanding.

Rush in Rio - Rush: A must have.

In Concert - David Gilmour: Semi acoustic, extremely beautiful perspective.

Mike Oldfield - Millenium Bell: Great street show in Berlin.

I've just got  Glass Hammer 'Lex Live'. It basically does what it 'says on the tin'.If you're into Glass Hammer then I highly recommend it to you BUT bear in mind that the concert footage is only just over an hour long so you may end up feeling a bit short changed. The bonus footage is about an hour long and helps makes up for it though.

Marillion - 'Marbles on the Road' & 'Wish You Were Here'. Great Hogarth-era DVD's.

Also, check out Magenta's new live DVD, 'The Gathering'. A brilliant performance. This should really open doors for the band. Their new studio album, 'Home' is coming later in 2006.

I've been looking at a DVD to buy for some time, and I have it narrowed down to Yes Symphonic Live or the Theusz Hamtaahk DVD. They both look like they have been well recieved by everyone yere, but since I can't stand spending money, It may be a little while before I get around to buying one.

The ELP DVD of Pictures at an Exhibition is an essential if you can forgive the cheesy special effects which intrude during the performance... still even with it.. a view into why many oldtimers I've talked to (yes older than I ahhahaha) say that ELP live was amoung the best shows period they saw in the 70's.

anyway my personal fav... sort of vanilla but what a DVD..

Yes - Symphonic Live (GoD, Ritual, CttE - done with those hotties in the orchestra).  Essential prog DVD.

I've got KC's Eyes wide open. The show is pretty simple but the band is great. They are technically impressing. Plus, it shows how much Robert Fripp seems to have a good time when he's playing

I'm not a big fan of Pink Floyd but I also highly recommend Live in Pompei if you like their pre-DSTOM period. Great show with a great panorama.

Excelent music but the DVD has a terrible flaw.

I hate those videos in which they play with the collors so much that the band members look as a caricature.

For God's sake, I want to see the bend, not an animation, plus I find very distasteful when Keith rubs that stick (Threefates said it is called a ribbon) and makes it sound with his arse.

I just got the Magma - Theus Hamtachk Triogie (dont know how to spell it) and it's pretty great, too bad it wasn't a performance from the 70s but it is still very impressive

it starts off kind of slow, but the way they finish with MDK was unbelievable,

Some of my favourites;

Steve Hackett- Once Above A Time/Somewhere In South America (same band but thankfully little duplication; great musicianship- also some top notch newer songs from 'To Watch The Storms' alongside the fan favourites)

Uriah Heep- Acoustically Driven/ The Magician's Birthday Party (the former is mud in the eye for all who say Heep ain't prog and the latter is one gig I'd love to have seen- Ken Hensley's return to the band is emotional for fans)

Yes- Keys To Ascension (an absolute dream of a set list with the band on great form)

Caravan- 35th Anniversary Concert (their new line-up has gelled a treat and they play a terrific set list with the band on great form)

Magnum- Livin' The Dream (great to hear their wonderful 'On A Storyteller's Night' live in full)

Nektar- Live (mix is very dodgy but it's a great show)

Jethro Tull- Living With The Past (Ian's voice isn't what it used to be, but what a gig this is- one of the best line-ups ever with a brilliant set)

ELP- Live At Montreux (takes a while to get going, but it reaches a great climax with some brilliant versions of classics)

Genesis- The Way We Walk (ok there are later songs, but most of em are all great live and the 'We Can't Dance' songs are particularly strong here)

Rick Wakeman- Live In Cuba (great show with a top form band and a crowd that just lap it up!)

Pink Floyd- Live At Pompeii (almost every song sounds better here to me)

As I'm still most interested in the bands from the 70's, lately I have been buying more DVD's than CD's, because I've already got the CD's of my favourites a long time ago and those bands don't produce new material at all or if they do, only in slow pace.
So, the prog-list includes, alphabetically and with comments:
Ian Anderson: Plays the Orchestral Jethro Tull (the acoustic side of Tull and Anderson accompanied by a full orchestra, Anderson's funny introductions are a big plus, one of my favourites)
Fish: Fool's Company (I ordered it for the complete performance of Misplaced Childhood and other Marillion favourites revisited, Fish voice has deteriorated a lot, but female backing vocalists compensate it a lot, musically as well...)
Peter Gabriel: Secret World Live (a nice setlist, but choreography doesn't fit to Gabriel's performance in my opinion, love the theatrics though)
also Peter Gabriel: Growing Up Live and Live & Unwrapped (had to have them too, partly out of habit I guess)
Genesis: Live (obviously unauthorized and therefore bad quality, but interesting, because it gives a chance to peek into a Gabriel-led Genesis performance, I wish this DVD had been properly repolished like Led Zeppelin's DVD is, why isn't there a decent Genesis live DVD from the 70's, who's to blame?)
Genesis: Live at Wembley Stadium & The Way We Walk (I prefer the latter, for its setlist is more interesting)
David Gilmour: In Concert (acoustic Floyd, some of it is fantastic, some a bit boring and confusing: what was the point in playing Shine On, part 1 acoustically? Different, ok, but does it work? NO!)
Jethro Tull: Slipstream & Living with the Past (I strongly dislike Anderson's notion that a live performance is not enough, both of these are spoiled by combining a concert with videos and interviews etc.)
Marillion: Recital of the Script (I like it a lot that Fish "acts" the songs instead of merely singing them, theatrics and prog belong together for me)
also Marillion: Live from Loreley (a better setlist, but less theatrical, still a favourite) & From Stoke Row to Ipanema (all songs from Season's End and some Fish-era stuff, a somewhat unnecessary documentary included) & Marbles on the Road (a long setlist and some embryonic versions of Marbles' songs, another favourite)
Rush: Rush in Rio (badly mixed, but a long set, with lots of favourites) & R30 (better mix and much more interesting extras, such as "live in studio" versions of 70's favourites)
Roger Waters: In the Flesh - Live (probably my all time favourite DVD, a great setlist and surprisingly good versions of Floyd songs by Waters' band and some of the best Waters' solo stuff as well, still I wish he would have published a live DVD from his 2002 tour instead, when he played both parts of Shine On You Crazy Diamond in their entirety and running order from Wish You Were)
Yes: Keys to Ascension (the best of the 70's material live with ridiculous animation and other visuals popping up without warning) & Live from the House of Blues (visuals thrown away, but less inspiring setlist)

(Sorry for the overly detailed post!)

I won't list all the prog DVD, just talk about the last one i bought in Netherlands, following Erik's advice:

PF Anthology

Incredible documents with pieces from 1968 to 1972, alternate versions -far more psychedelic than studio versions cause more improvised- including:
"Jugband blues" (with Syd), "Set the control" , "Cymbaline" ( note that Gilmour sings like a casserole, as usual), "Atom heart mother" live Japan.

A must have for any PF first era lover.

Well, I'm not yet really familiar with the prog-scene, but I've bought my first DVD's, which are:

Dream Theater - Live At Budokan
Dream Theater - Live Scenes From New York
Dream Theater - Live In Tokyo/5 Years In A Live Time

Rush - R30
Rush - Rush in Rio

I absolutely LOVE the R30 dvd, even if it was just for the incredible design of the case and the menu's. The concert is pretty slick, but when I bought Rio the crowd on R30 seemed pretty laid-back. It doesn't bother me, but after seeing the show in Rio.....

The DT dvd's are pretty good, but it's obvious they had a nice budget for the Budokan DVD. Some excellent shots, and ofcourse a well performance by the band.
I like the tokyo/5 years in a livetime dvd because of the footage of the gig they did in Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club. It's just great seeing them perfom Damage Inc. with Barney Greenway on vocals.

One of the best DVDs I have and the most original and amazing is Magma's Theusz Hamtaahk Trilogie au Trianon release.  All I can say is wow!!!  These guys are seriously entertaining and what musicians.  What sets this dvd apart from excellent releases like Gentle Giants Giant on the Box, my second favorite release, is the originality.  It's an experience like no other.  You must see it too believe it!!!!

Hello Ivan.

If you got the idea that you are a (prog) rock DVD addict, you should have a look at my collection: after reading your post I started to count, almost 200 and this within 4 years! Perhaps 75% is progrock, including lots of rare footage that has been downloaded from Internet by friends who are specialized in doing this. My most precious DVD footage is from Japan, I bought a live concert by Gerard and a compilation featuring bands like Outer Limits, Mugen and Social Tension. But one of the most compelling DVD's is from your country: Alturas De Macchu Picchu by Los Jaivas, what a mindblowing music and enviroment!

THE DVD IS THE MOST WONDERFUL INVENTION OF THE LAST 50 YERAS BECAUSE IT GIVES AN EXTRA DIMENSION WHEN YOU EXPERIENCE MUSIC!

Well I have DVD playerfor only 2 years, so I'll catch you  The problem here in Perú is the lack of good material, and the cost, a DVD costs S/: 87.00 and the change is S/. 3.30 per dollar, so everything i around 30 US bucks.

Agree about Los Jaivas, the music is Chilean, but the environment is Perú, beautiful DVD

BECAUSE IT GIVES AN EXTRA DIMENSION WHEN YOU EXPERIENCE MUSIC!

Yeap, I got the chance to see the great bands in their peak, something I never dreamed a dew years ago.

Well, atleast I have two of em

Pictures is very good except for those collors added by the producer to make a Psychedelic scenario.

Rick Wakeman's concert is in Australia and sounds terrible, the narrator is not in the level of David Hemmings.

Hope I get the one by Procol Harum, but I think I have enough yes DVD's.

Better get them individually, so you can choose the ones you really want, I read Rick is going to recreate Journey next year, so it will be better to wait and Yes has a lot to choose.

Try to get the 90 minutes version of Pictures At An Exhibition by ELP, taken from the Japanese laser-disc version, it contains 30+ minutes including some 'Hammond wrestling' from Keith Emerson with his Hammond L100, great stage antics!

have the Yes one on a seperate DVD..... 3 songs only.  AWESOME version of Yours Is No Disgrace... very good B&W of No Opportunity Necessary, No Experience Needed plus I've Seen All Good People.

decent quality... great music.  Taken from German T.V. appereances.  Ivan has the call on the ELP DVD.. but psychedlic effects aside.... AWESOME!!!!!, I highly recommend it... or especially  recommend for ELP the new one or Masters from the Vaults to see a new fresh hungry (and on good terms at the time  hahahha) ELP touring on support of their debut album (RONDO....RONDO... RONDO  )  and same with the Wakeman... thought it was... decent at best.  Don't have the Procol Harem one.
