Upon seeing a post inviting us to nominate our entries for "cheesiest prog band", it seemed like a good time for me to ask the obvious question... what is "cheese"?
I thought about looking for a cheese archives" website but then realized that it would probably be the last place I could find people to actually agree on the definition for "cheese"!
 So...
Is something cheesy simply because it is out of fashion and is now considered to be "in poor taste" by the majority of of style conscious people? If so, almost all prog would quality, no?
Does "cheesy" mean to be steeped in stereotypes to the point of absurdity? If that is the case, then cheesy can be a gloriously fun thing to behold, no?
Or is "cheesy" an adjective used to describe something that may have sounded fresh and cool at one time - but that time has long ago "come and gone"? If so, this thing has now curdled with age?
Example: The Fairlight drum machine. In 1980 it sounded modern and innovative. Now it sounds like a $19.95 Casio toy keyboard. Is has aged terribly. It is "cheesy"!
Is there a difference between "cheesy" and "corny"? If so, what is this difference?

Casio is cheesy i must say i can handle a lot of cheese, im quite accusted to it, basicly what most people label AOR or MOR, are often celld cheesey, check out the band Cannata and you will get an idea what cheese is, -------------

I'd say it's most your second definition, and yes it can be fun-- the first and third defs are closer to "dated", and if done well, "retro" or "vintage" |

When I think of cheesy I think of words like: sappy, saccharine, silly, over-the-top, melodramatic, pretentious, pompous, bloated, 'keyboard-laden', humorously arrogant, dated, shallow, superficial, insincere, 'Queen', power rock/metal, and last but not least - Pepperjack. It's all semantics and salami. When speaking of music, I think most folks think of it as if they would be calling it insincere, power-ballad-filled, and silly.

Well, as I like cheese as in the food, I am a bit baffled why cheesy=bad. The term should be cheezewhizzy or something.

| I think it's when a band takes themselves too seriously. A lot of metalcore strikes me as cheesy. Some power metal is undoubtedly cheesy, but many of the better power metal bands like Rhapsody of Fire and Angra have a degree of humor or fun in their music. The newest Kamelot album could be described as cheesy because they "try too hard" unlike other albums like Karma. |

Hmm... pretty much anything by Arjen Anthony Lucassen, or fantasy-themed power metal (Rhapsody, Dragonforce et al).
