It's like a real life version of "Spot the Differences." Unhappy

On a whim, we decided to treat ourselves to breakfast, pay a bill, visit the library, and shop for our son's 4th birthday party as a family.

Arriving home, I tried to unlock the door and realized someone had graciously done that for me.  The door frame and doorknob receptacle were damaged.  I ordered my family to wait by the car and I grabbed a nearby hunting knife and quickly checked our rooms and closets.  The back door was open, so I suppose they took off through the woods.

I surmise there was only one thief: He had removed a pillowcase from our bed, filled it with my wife's laptop and digital camera, and lifted the TV.  None of my music equipment was removed.  Nothing else was touched (although my computer monitor was turned on).

The police arrived and did the necessary paperwork, dusted for prints, and so forth.  The dusting revealed whoever had robbed us was wearing socks on his hands.

We don't have much, and it's a shame that someone is willing to steal what little we do have.  Ouch

Wow Rob...I'm really sorry to hear that. Ouch  Hopefully they can catch the guy who did it, even with the setback of not having prints.  Sending best wishes to you and your family.

That sucks Rob, but good news is that he didn't break in while you were home or the family was home without you, or that you didn't walk in on him.  That is usually when bad things happen.  I spend so little time at home, I am always worried that I will come home and find that somebody broke in and stole whatever precious material items that I may have.

I know how you feel Rob, happened to us about two years ago.  A terrible feeling.  I wish I'd have caught em, would have loved to have dropped em, maybe pulled the golf club out of the trunk.

We're going to be vigilant in checking the local Craigslist advertisements.

I'm not sure if thieves have wised-up about hawking merchandise at pawn shops (since there are databases they use to flag stolen merchandise), but it's just one more thing we can do.

My wife's laptop is password protected and Jolly Rancher purple, so if there's any hope of getting something back, it's that, but that could just be wishful thinking.

I need a drink.

I met the guy in the who came out of my flat with my TV. In the police interviews later that day, I claimed a total blackout and got my GP to confirm various mitigations. No charges was pressed against me although the guy had a very rough ride down the staircase and out of business for a very long time.

I had a former co-worker who had a friend who was robbed at a baseball game down in the city.  Apparently this guy had a black belt and the robber didn't know what hit him.  Unfortunately, the guy with the black belt ended up with charges being brought against him.  Use of a deadly weapon or excessive force or something along those lines.  Apparently, he should have warned the would-be robber that he was a black belt before the robber tried to rob him or something.Confused

Very sorry, Rob.

I once came home from work early, and caught a strange guy fiddling with the front door of my apartment building.  He saw me coming and ran off to his car.  He apparently cleaned out all of the lower apartments first, and was working on mine.

He got my roommates video game set (I forget what it was, this was the late eighties), and all of my CDs (a few hundred at the time).  I called the police, and while I waited for them to arrive, I called every used CD store in the area (at the time there were quite a few)

The next morning, I got a call from a shop in Cambridge.  The owner had the description of what was in my collection, and told the guy that in order to buy such a large collection, he needed a photocopy of his driver's license.  The idiot gave it to him.  Unfortunately, the thief got suspicious, and left before the police arrived.  The owner gave me a copy of his license.

Later that morning, I got a call from a shop in Boston.  The guy was there.  They called the police.  I took a cab, and of course arrived before the Boston Police.  The thief saw me (he recognized me from when I caught him at the door).  He dropped the duffel bag full of CDs and ran.  I got my collection back.

Despite having a copy of his driver's license, the cops didn't arrest him until about a week later, when he was caught trying to break into an elderly blind woman's apartment.

Not much of what was stolen from my neighbors was recovered.  I'm sure if the police acted on the information they received, he wouldn't have been able to sell all the stuff.

The thief was sentenced to 15 years for blind lady's apartment.  They never prosecuted for my apartment.  I didn't really care.  He was in jail.  I got my CDs back (quite a few are autographed).

Trust me. I know what I'm doing.

Damn - seems like scum exists everywhere. My grandparents got robbed not too long ago, but the most important thing they were robbed off, was there sense of security, and now they call either my parents or myself whenever they hear a pip.
I am really sorry to hear this - I hope you get that teaching job. I work with children whenever my studies allow for it, and it is by far the most giving and wonderful thing I have ever done with my life.

I read somewhere on the internet that the police almost never get anything useful when dusting for fingerprints, they just do it because that's what people expect them to do (and it doesn't take much time so it's worth it for people to feel better).

I'm sorry Rob. I don't think the password will help much except protect you from identity theft: he was probably going to reformat the drive anyway before selling it to be on the safe side. I wouldn't have too much hope for even the laptop, unfortunately.

The laptop is a netbook with no CD drive though, so maybe there's that. [/computerignorance]

I don't know.  I'm just disgusted.  That laptop was a gift to my wife.  So was her camera.  She has nothing of value now other than her wedding rings and a pearl necklace I gave her a long time ago.  That is it.

Sorry to read about this Robert. But see the bright side: nobody was there, nobody was hurt. The things they stole you'll eventually replace. And the thief, he will eventually pay for his crimes. It's a fact. A life of crime and theft leads to two bad outcomes. You, on the other hand, have much more to cherish, you have things so much more important than just stuff...

Now, I wonder if there ever was a thief who stole beer...

The situation is more dire than I expected.

I saw the next door neighbors come home, so I threw on my shoes and went to meet them.  They have two young boys who play basketball with the (neon) white kid across the street after school.

They were incensed when I relayed our story.  Why?

They were robbed of $3,000 worth of property exactly one month ago.

That sounds quite likely and logical. At least that gives some type of idea where to start looking for clues. And, specially, who to be extra cautious about. When conditions allow for it, of course, that might also signal that moving out of that particular location may be a good idea, though of course this is a lot easier to say than to do.

If they broke into my house I wouldn't mind if they take my tv but if they touch just one CD I will totally start my own vigilante team.

Actually, as David says, feeling invaded, knowing that someone entered into your place without permission and grabbed what you work to get, that must be horrible. But people who start on the wrong track end on the wrong place. Sadly, that doesn't bring back the items but at least you know life will cash somebody's checks.

Sorry to hear that, Robert... and thanks God you and family are OK and it's the most important.

I ask you to keep both eyes wide open. This kind of thieves don't go blindly checking houses in a street to see if one is "suitable". In general they lived or worked in the neighborhood or got the information from someone who lived or worked close to your block. BTW, do you know if there's any surveillance cameras around?

Indeed- the idea that someone you've never seen has been in your home, viewed your belongings, knows the lay of your house, and- worst of all- knows what your children look like and where they sleep- is quite harrowing.

That's terrible, terrible, terrible news, I hope you and your family are doing ok.

Do you still need a TV? This might sound odd, and I don't know a lot about this service, but could set up a 'ChipIn' kinda thing? You know where bands take donations online to fund their albums?

I'd donate something - and I bet others here who could do so would.  Not sure whether it's hassle to set up, fees etc but thought I'd suggested it.

Sorry to hear your bad news. It makes my blood boil that low life vermin like this seem to get away with it more often than not and when they do get caught nothing much happens to them. I recently heard on the news that here in the UK a burgular was stabbed to death when breaking into a property. I'm not ashamed to say I was glad to hear it - one less low life is okay with me. It's the poor sod he was robbing that I feel for who'll probably get done for manslaughter.

Well, well well...

Another house on this street was broken into.  The thief thought it was empty, but there was an old man inside sleeping.

The punk fled, running through our backyard and the backyard of our neighbors, escaping to the house on the corner.  The woman across the street from us witnessed this and telephoned the police as her husband went to confront the people personally (foolish move I think).  The couple (so I'm told) played dumb, but tried to flee before the cops arrived.  I'm told the cops got the girl, who was driving, but the male took off on foot into the woods.

A horde of police officers are around that house.  There is hope we will see our property again.

It saddens me though, because these people have children.

It saddens me though, because these people have children.

You lead such an exciting life, Rob. My apartment was broken into once, but I came home before they could finish robbing me and they they fled with only a drawer full of change (estimated value $5) while leaving my laptop and guitar completely untouched. As trivial as that was, it was very unnerving to have my home violated like that. I can only imagine how you must feel.

The police have had that house surrounded now for well over 8 hours.  There are police surrounding the neighborhood as well.

There's an incredible possibility that our things are just three houses away, and that, if they don't hold anything for evidence, we may get back soon.

Either way, it's good to see up close that something is happening.

Also, our 8-year anniversary dinner was overpriced, but very delicious.

I just saw this thread Rob and i'm so sorry to hear that. We always lock our doors up here too but if someone wants in they'll get in.As a kid growing up here my parents never locked the door which is hard to imagine nowadays. The only incident was getting up one morning and seeing this guy passed out on our couch in the living room.My dad proceeded to throw him out on his ass.We live in a tourist town and the guy was obviously a drunk tourist and probably didn't know what he was doing.

Yeah, closest thing to an intruder at my place was a drunk guy passing out on our lawn.

The closest we've had is someone stealing our generator out of our garage one winter.

Sorry this happened. I hope you get your belongings back. It's probably a good thing that you did not confront them personally. If it's drug related and they are selling stolen mechandise for drug money then you don't know just what kind of twisted individuals you are dealing with. Nothing of that nature is worth putting your life on the line for. This happened to me long ago and my equipment was confiscated by detectives after they filmed the robbers on camera attempting to sell it. But this was a series of break-ins by a drug ring which gave police the determination to work undercover. Actually this was someone who had been in my house. Someone I knew....and the police had told me that in most cases it's  someone you know or someone who has been to your house at least once. I don't agree with that totally because there are those who jog up and down the street scoping out your house and observing your routine patterns and they don't know you and you are just another number.

Sorry that you got broken into and robbed but it is good that there's a possibility that they got the miscreants that did it. I do hope that you get all your things back.

We just saw somebody in a green shirt creep through the backdoor on the house on the corner.

I have called 911 and the police are on the way.  I'm watching the house to make sure no one leaves (though I cannot see the front).

The f**kers want to watch us so they can take from us...two can play that game.

Damn it- the police left.  A little later I saw the guy in the green shirt again, and I called once more.  The dispatcher told me that the guy is a boy who lives there (he looks like a teenager to me).

I wish I knew more about who lived there, who was involved in criminal activity, and what the status of this case is (I mean, we still don't know if the people in that house are responsible for the burglary that occurred in our home).

Just wish we knew more.

Do you have a good watch dog?  If you don't you should consider that an alternative. I hope to God they catch these smucks. What I hate the most is the fact they are on a mission. That really gets my blood boiling. Good luck to you. I was just wondering if you considered this: They would have to be stupied ...to come back. Re-enter your home. Would they not be afraid of being caught by the police? Usually they go for a road where the first house spotted may sit on a hill and the one built next to it is back in the woods. Their crafty little plots go with the territory. I keep a baseball bat hidden next to my back door in case I am awoken by a freak fooling about in the yard. Although I live in a historical town where there is not much of a call for robbery there are registered child molesters here. I wished you knew for sure if those people in the house were responsible. Hopefully you may find out soon. A quicker method of them getting busted is for the cops to suspect they are indulging in drug consumption. Good luck to you and your family.

My wife would never tolerate a dog!  LOL  We have weapons- but weapons do no good if someone is watching you come and go.

Like I said, I just wish I knew what relationship that house has with the robberies that have taken place on this street.

That sucks. I've become quite obsessive/compulsive about locking my place whenever I leave - reminds me of Jack Nicholson in As Good As It Gets at times - especially since my apartement is at ground level, so anyone could relatively easily break in through the windows. Usually the place is a mess though, so anyone peeking through the window is not likely to see anything worth stealing.

LOL  My theory is that if anyone looks through the window they will see the mess and assume that my house has already been hit and move on.

I once had a drunk guy walk in my house, turn off a smoke alarm, then pass out in the alley.  I think it woke him up.

And yet, absolutely no one calls me that IRL.

What most people do call me, none of you (save one or two) actually know.

I just got off the phone with the police.

They are going to make an arrest today.  Yes, it is the man on the corner.  His criminal activity has been consistent: B&E using socks on his hands and using a pillowcase to haul things off.  He is also to be arrested for assault on a government official as well as other things.

Also, the police say they are fairly sure they have recovered our TV.

Approve
